PostSubject: Hip Hop Instrumentals?   Wed 27 Jun 2012, 9:13 pm

I've just recently began to get into instrumental albums. I've recently purchased DJ Shadow "Endtroducing", Madlib "Shades of Blue", and J. Dilla "Donuts". I really dig them all. Any recommendations for more instrumental stuff? Looking to get some more.

Some bangaz:

* You may have heard some of these already, just pulling these off of the top of my head, probably forgetting some great stuff too but check some of these out...

RJD2 - Dead Ringer

DJ Krush - Strictly Turntablized

Four Tet - Rounds (mostly hip hop)

Prefuse 73 - Vocal Studies + Uprock Narratives (has some vocal tracks like the dope "Blacklist" though)

Ratatat - Ratatat (I don't think this is really hip hop instrumental album but a lot of people say otherwise and they did shit with Kid Cudi, a bunch of hip hop remixes, etc. so fuck it)

Blockhead - Music By Cavelight (took a while to grow on me but I like it quite a bit now)

Blue Sky Black Death - Noir (still dope as fuck IMO)

Clams Casino - Instrumentals (totally free mixtape, I dig his ambient-ish style and the way he uses vocal samples... produces for some of the worst rappers in the game (Lil B, Mac Miller, Soulja Boy))

Various Artists - Saudade Compiled by Pandeiro (some nice ones from Nujabes, Dela, Nomak)

Madlib - Beat Konducta Series (yeah get them all, all varying degrees of dope)

MF Doom - Special Herbs Box Set (it's worth it, but then you'll be pissed at Doom for not making new beats in years)

Oh No - Dr. No's Oxperiment (dopeness)

Nujabes - Hydeout Productions 2nd Collection (not sure if you listen to Nujabes or not... some tracks with rappers, mostly instrumental)

Onra - Long Distance (not really hip-hop instrumentals but dude just makes some funky beats... if you like some funk or soul check this out. Also has some tracks with rappers/singers)

Unkle - Psyence Fiction (some hip-hop, some trip-hop, rock, electronic... also this shouldn't really count because it's not a mainly instrumental album, but DJ Shadow does some nice work on it and it's just an overall dope album)

Thanks! I'll definitely grab some of those. What about the Madlib Medicine show series? I was thinking about telling the wife to get me the Medicine Show Brick for my anniversary coming up.

The medicine show is a very mixed bag. Some are remix albums, some are dj mixes, some are beat tapes. You'll probably love some, and you probably won't care for others. I think out of all of them, #5 is must have....some great old unreleased Madlib beats on there.

Nicolay: City Lights 1.5
Ayatollah has a few dope instro albums
BSBD has instro versions of Holocaust, Evil Jeanius, and Razah's Ladder...

Also, the Think Differently: Wu meets Indie Culture Instrumentals is one of my favorites lately.
