If you're not bumping this now I hope your waiting for it in the mail or you should give up listening to rap altogether and bump Hanna Montanna you waffle cone-head sonuvabich. This isn't just a personal classic this should be considered an ovarall classic right along with Below The Heavens[b] and The Blueprint theres some albums that need to be recognized as solidified classic albums. Actually, this is the best album I heard since Megalon's A Penny For Your Thoughts. Chino never dropped a classic til' now. His first album was dope and lyrically groundbreaking but the production lacked. His second album he was trying too hard for mainstream success and he had too many awkward sounding songs and his production lacked. His third album had a stellar concept had alright production but it was tad on the short side the last couple of songs were weak sauce and it didn't help that one of the best songs Nunca was recycled from I Told You So. And his hooks. Chino always lacked in this department. His second album actually had some of the worst hooks outside an Eminem album.

I would like to say everything that plagued Chino's albums is fine-tuned here. All the hooks are decent, granted their still not his strong points. The production is top-notch and consistent track to track. K-Rino should take notes. And Chino XL does what he does best. Rip shi and name drop. Most of the songs he's in battle mode and bragging about his greatness which is fine by me cause thats his strong suit. Dont get me wrong, he got some deep and intense songs here too. In past albums when he tried treading in meaningful territory it was like watching a dog swimming in water, sure he could manage but it didn't seem natural for him. Here he nails those powerful emotionally charged songs with a sweaty fore arm holding a hammer. I liked how he opened the album with a tear-jerker about his daughter with cancer. This is Chino's emotional side, not unfamiliar for XL but not the side fans really want to see at the start of his albums but the song is very gripping and sucks you in. I almost wanted to cry after hearing this song, not cause of the little girl with cancer but 'cause I knew this was going to be a dope album.

This album came like a thief in the night. While there was alot of albums that came out this year that was surrounded be the hype machine **couch Kruel Summer** that fell flat. This is that 20 dollar that you found in a pair of pants while doing laundry. This album seemed personal for Mr.Barbosa, like he had something to prove, like he had to get some weight of his chest. I almost didn't want to do a review on this album cause my writing skills ain't up to par to capture the magnitude of this opus. May I add there is not one skippable track. This is a double-album so I was expecting some filler but nope. Chino did a good job tightening things up,making sure the upper crust is fastened to the tin rim perfectly.

Album of the year? Best album released so far this decade, suckas.

This is the best I've heard so far from 2012, really dope album. Not as blown away by it as Trotter but it was worth the money and it kept me engaged for the 2+ hour length. I have a feeling it will grow on me more too.

Uh yeah, easily. Life is Good is merely good. I haven't listened to it since I heard it the first two times. Not that impressive. Trophies is good too, but Apollo Brown and O.C. were both pretty lazy on some tracks on that album. Apollo Brown basically played out his whole beat-making style by the end of the album. Some gems on both albums but neither album is as consistently good/interesting/engaging/varied as Ricanstruction.

Steve youra a idiot. I havent heard Trophies But I know Rican is better. I actually think its better than Megalon's APFYT. So Ricanstruction to me is the GOAT album. Why? Not only does Chino rap his ass off with the best lyrics I ever heard he got personal. You can feel his pain. The reason I like APFYT so much is that Megalon is like reading from a diary I get the same vibe with Rican. Even when Chino is bragging on himself you can tell he has an empty void in his heart. This is what music is all about

Anything that is the "best" from a certain year IMO should be an album that "blows you away"....but half bitch half elephant has already said right here that this is a "really dope album" but then says in the same sentence that it is the "best" he has heard so far in 2012???

Score = 0

and with that pitiful ass review this isn't something even worth purchasing for me....because just knowing Chino's history I already know damn well he isn't capable of an AOTY......this shit isn't better then Life Is Good nor Trophies Get The Fuck Out

hey half gorilla half banana, which tracks exactly did Apollo Brown play out his production style on?? which tracks on that album were they lazy on??

I will however give you some credit in that unlike others on here, you aren't afraid to admit your race....lol, thats whats up!

An album doesn't have to blow you away to be your favorite from the year. All I'm saying that of all the albums I've heard from this year, I like this one the most. It's that simple. As for Apollo Brown, he actually has some dope beats on this album like "Can Be" where he isn't using the same exact fucking drum sound and sample chopping that he uses on a majority of his beats. If you're a fan of his you know what I'm talking about, don't front.

So yeah I'm still waiting for a classic or near classic album from this year. Chino's album is great but not quite on that level. I like it the most of the hip hop albums I've heard this year, don't see what's so hard to understand. And as for making a detailed review, nobody on this site reads them so there's no point really. They just want the score or if it's a rapper they like they only accept dickriding.

thats the most honest statement I've ever seen from halfy since being on this forum...

he is admitting that 2012 overall has been puke and mud.....and thats coming from someone that actually believes in the 00's being the "best period of hip-hop culture"....lol

Good job half sausage half bisquick.....appreciate the honest thoughts

the funny thing is that I actually have 2 classics dropping from this year (so far at least which are Trophies and Life Is Good) but 2012 on a whole is doo doo panties.....

This album is quite fucking dope. I don't like it as much as Billy Woods, but its up there. Kevin, he definitely diversifies his subject matter on this, I think you'd like it except that his mechanical flow might not appeal to you. There's a lot of real personal tracks on here.

D.Powell is waay too stuck in the past to make a justifiable statement on new school stuff. He's never even made a good recommendation. And Life Is Good is below average. Ricanstruction is the God album.

Reading Powell's post is like watching a porno star tryna act. Dont take it too seriously cause their very limited in that medium

just because Chino tried the personal approach here doesn't mean that the album is an all-time classic...lol, what the fuck is that??

does he have his same boring ass flow?? did he change his production this time around a whole bunch?? did he change that wack ass voice of his this time??

I've heard many emcees try the "personal" approach before and the shit just fails...and if you've been listening to hip-hop long enough then you should have heard it all by now too....thats nowhere near enough to call a hip-hop album an all-time classic.... Get The Fuck Out

Hey gametheory give me some feedback on this album man....J.Highsmith holla on this one...Pounds throw out a few words on this one.....J.Harris whats good on this one??

looking for some honest reviews on this "AOTY"???? lol

#1 Powell, if you dont like his voice then there is no point continuing in the argument, you just dont like Chino, but if you decide to give this album a chance with an open mind i think you would see the very dope hip hop coming through.

#2 2012 has been a surprise for me. There have been MANY 4+ star albums to me and even one close to classic (Killer Mike & El-P). For someone that comes from the "old school" you sure seem awfully quick yo throw out the "classic" label from such new albums (Trophies, Life is Good--neither of those are classic btw). Also, a CLASSIC is somethign that only TIME can determine so stop acting like a young dick rider and throwing out the sacred word with such ease.

#3 the 90's are the best period of hip hop so dont get it twisted

#4 Life is Good is 3.5 stars at best

I'm using the word classic on Trophies and Life Is Good because I feel both of them will stand the test of time sally.....thats my opinion on both of them just like it was my opinion on Untitled when I first heard that one too...so you have your wu-tang clan opinions and I have mine...whats your point sally?? also if you notice trotter used the same damn word when describing this Chino...so it's all opinion sally.....

Ricanstruction is okay, but Chino XL rambles on and never switches up his flow. It's okay, but has some weak production, and he can't carry 2 discs.

Steve you heard the album.? I find it funny you said Father's Day when that was the only track I mentioned in the review. But the production is weak? You gotta be kidding me. If Chino didn't switch up his flow his production did. The beats were too unpredictable from one track to another. And Chino only switches his flow only on his chorus-thats his trademark. Saying the production was weak is like saying the special effects in Avatar were doo-doo. Meaning if Avatar's CGI don't impress you nothing well. He had an array of beat makers. Tracks like NAHH, Afriad Of NothingCloser To God, had crazy beats. Some beats sound like some throwback 94' shit like Sleep In Scarlet, and Taking it Back

And the cameos--OH LORD!!! DV Alias Christ ! Immortal Technique ! Thirstin Howl The Third!
Big Pun ! and your bunny TechN9ne! Dont let my appraisal or the riff raff here deter you from a great album.

yo trotter, why can't heads have their own opinions?? why are you always fuckin' shocked when some people think the shit you love could possibly be wack?? why does that bother you so much?? you act like a bitch who's upset that someone said something bad about her hair, like she can't believe that people would have the audacity to do that..lol, get over it dipstick...better yet get over yourself....you think that because you think Life Is Good and Trophies is below average means anything to anyone in here?? or certainly to me??
I could care less my indiana resident...because I know that those are two extremely bangin' albums that are both already personal classics for me whether trotter thinks so or not...who cares?? stop trying to act like it's only you in here who knows Good hip-hop music....because we all know that ain't true Beavis!

fuck that, I needed to hear some REAL hip-hop music before I head into the office so I just reached for the best that 2012 has to offer so far IN MY OPINION...who cares what trotter and sally think?? NOT ME! I still gotta pick up that Killer Mike because I have heard great things about that, so we shall see.....but as of right now Nas/O.C./Apollo Brown are pretty solid as the KINGS of 2012 for me......

It's not just that he gets personal on this, it's how effective he is at it. Delivers the pain right at your chest. This is getting better the more time I give it... as lyrically dense as I'd expected.

Powell, his vocals are definitely a weakness. It's completely justifiable criticism. I don't really mind it, I've always been willing to trade aesthetics for wordplay. Probably one of the reasons I like HWAM better.

His production choices on this are better than I'd expected, that area kind of killed HTSYA, in my opinion. It's got to sound nice on some level...

I do like that Nas track, by the way. It's the best beat he's had on an album since Stillmatic.

You're off your rocker if you think 2012 has been "doo doo panties". There's been a lot of excellent material to drop this year.

First-off Powell, I never said Trophies was sub-par, just Life Is Good. The album didn't have any meat. Youre right T.Meyers 2012 had some bangers. Ive only heard a handful of albums this year but what I heard are stand out material.

lmao, i may be harsh on Life is Good, when i first head it i thought 4 stars, everything good but unspectacular, but i haven't had the urge to spin it much aside from a handful of tracks. It's good no doubt but something is missing, it aint fuckin with RICANstruction IMO

I got this yesterday and it is so much better than I anticipated. Never been a big fan, but this album is solid as ----! He sounds like a robot sometimes, but aside from that, the production was nice to me and Chino absolutely destroys the album lyrically. Bear in mind that I haven't even listened to the 2nd disc yet. I've spun the 1st disc 3 times. Not my album of the year, but definitely top 3!

damn, i missed a good thread here! Guess I'm just late as usual. By the looks of it, too bad SRP wasn't here for this one.. classic HH4L Powell fuelled debates (abuse?).

Very entertaining review up there Trotter, from the looks of it even I who have been mostly sleeping on Chino since his 1st album, am at least interested to hear this now and see what all the fuss is about.

What producers were on this album??

Disc 1 is the only one I've listened to so far, and it's awesome (in my opinion). The heartfelt and personal songs are really well done. Not sure how many of those are on the 2nd disc, but it would probably work better as an album if those tracks were separate from the usual "battle" rhymes.

Hell yes! I've still only spun the 1st disc. I'm getting ready to throw the 2nd one in. The 1st disc would have easily worked for a whole album. Can't wait to hear what the 2nd disc is like.

Producers include Apollo Brown (quite a few songs), Stu Bangas, and alot more.
