| With all this talk about this ablum I just knew there was an official review thread for it. Guess not.
I'm finally hearing it right now and man....dope dope.Anybody who grew up in a gang infested city or area should relate to this album. Kendrick captures the vibe of a good kid caught up in a bad area well. Pretty original concept album. Nice flip on typical talk on hood life.

| It's about a 4 star album to me. I enjoyed the concept, but not all of the tracks were on point to me. B**** Don't Kill My Vibe, Dying of Thirst, and Real didn't do it for me. Sherane, Poetic Justice, and Good Kid are ok to me, but i don't really love them. I love the other 6 tracks though. Concept albums can be a double edged sword. When executed properly, they are amazing, but if you can't listen to certain tracks, it's like cutting out scenes in a movie. | |

| Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe and Real are the only songs that I don't really care for. I will say 4.25-4.5 after one listen. If anyone knows where I can get the Recipe (Black Hippy Remix) from, let me know. Thanks. | |

I agree. But I do think this concept album was delivered fairly well. Dyin of Thirst is one of the best trks on the album to me. I wasn't really feeling Backseat Freestyle much. And Real is aiight. But other than those two everything else is on a higher level. I'll say this concept album was better put together than Roots Undun. I'll give this album a 4.25-4.5 or so as of now. | I don't like Lamar's music at all. I think he's overrated as an emcee, about Wayne-level skills sounds right to me.
However, this album gets points on creativity. He's dedicated to the concept. And, he really went out on a limb with some of these beats.
I'll probably never listen to this again.
Just too many other albums lately that are more my taste.

| After one listen I enjoy the album. I do appreciate the concept behind it, it really is a "short film by Kendrick Lamar". With that said there are some weak tracks on here. Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe sounded like Kendrick was making fun of Andre 3000 or something. It killed the vibe set by the previous track if you ask me. Poetic Justice... fuck that song. Backseat Freestyle? Well he spits some cool lines but that chorus and voice he uses is fucking annoying. I don't care if it fits the concept or not. Real, a.k.a Real Real Real Real Really Real Real Real Really Real... well I guess I don't have to explain why I don't like it now. Finally, Compton isn't a bad song but I was caught off guard by how forgettable the track was. It didn't seem like a good way to wrap up the album. I think that The Art of Peer Pressure, Sherane, and m.A.A.d city were the best tracks.
I'd say this is on par with Section.80. Section.80 has songs like HiiPower and Fuck Your Ethnicity that are much better than anything on this album, but this album does have a stronger concept/narrative and sounds like a lot more work was put into it.
All of this is reaction based on just one listen though, so I'll make sure to give a couple more listens to see if it grows on me more.
People are definitely over-hyping this album though, no question.

| The hype this album is getting just proves how weak the mainstream has got. While it is a good album there have been better albums made that the mainstream just did not pay attention too. I'm glad its a rapper like K.Dot getting this hype though. | |

| OK, I finally caved to peer pressure and heard the album and WHHHOOOOOAAAHHH is this shit overrated!!! OKAY, what about this is good? This isn't even as good as the average Moka Only album. The highlight is MaadCity. That song stood out. This album sounded to "kiddy". Its an album for kids. As for the overall ambience it sounds like an OutKast album, for kids. Nothing here was original. Not that every album has to be original but this was pumped up as something spectacular. Maybe Im listening wrong. Its too mellodramatic, not that thats a bad thing but there are rappers that do this better. I think people are just entralled that an album like this is getting major attention. Woopty Doo. Like finding out apples outsold Snickers bars in Grocery stores. Its still an apple. Maybe its my bias. But people are saying you gotta listen to it 5 times, that its a story. Fuck dat. I haveta be floored my first listen if this is suppose to be AOTY. I didn't havta listen to A Penny For Your Thoughts 5 times to enjoy Tommy Gunn'a concept. It just hit automatically.
I remember when I was shitting on MY DARK TWISTED FANTASY. But when I was skimming through the album just listening to portions of songs I instantly liked it. Speaking of Kanye, I feel K.Dot is kinda jocking his style. C'mon Son.
This is nowhere near on the level of Ricanstruction. Id take any 14 songs off that album and it will just crush this. This should not be considered a classic or AOTY. Nothing new here, folks. Move along.

| As I said in the recent spins thread, I was lukewarm on this joint after the first listen...since then I've spun it about a dozen times and I think shit is dope. It's not a classic but it will most certainly crack my top ten unless a bunch more dope albums come out this year, which is always possible.
And I can certainly understand the gripes that I have read above but I don't agree with them.
Wayne-level talent? Either you really hate Kendrick or you really love Wayne. That fool couldn't tell a story to save his daughter's life.
An album for kids? Why, because he's not a broke 30 year old? That shit just doesn't make sense. I doubt most kids have the patience to even listen to this album because there are no standout bangers unless you count Swimming Pools, which I don't.
And maybe I'm just disconnected from the world of popular media but who the fuck is over-hyping this album? You know, besides Trotter, that is? I'm one of the only people I know that has even heard of it. Shit, maybe I'm just getting too old...

| Yea, his overall stories are way more thoughtful than Wayne would ever commit to. His actual rhymes, though... very weak in my opinion. Also, very reminiscent of Wayne to me.
And understand, this is the second full length I've listened to from him. So, due to that alone, I did have some preconceptions. But, not on the other one I didn't. That's because of the hype he gets. I fell for last time. It's not hype like at the barbershop or whatever. It's Internet hype from what I see.

No, he def isn't a technical rapper but I don't look for that as a defining characteristic of overall skill so it doesn't bother me in the least. And I don't really check out any Hip Hop news sites so maybe I missed the internet hype.

Lol, why am I a hypocrite? I never faulted you for not liking this album. You gave it a spin and it wasn't for you. I did the same with Billy Woods. That's all gravy. What I thought was hilarious was that you were the one who was talking about this album the most out of anybody and were complaining that he was overhyped. And Kendrick and Woods are pretty much opposites so its not a surprise that if you like one you won't like the other.

I don't get it either. It's a must-repeat type of joint to me. And it dumps, so that's a plus in the whip. I also just really identify with the subject. I like to be alone in the zone and I just absolutely wanna cut a bitch when someone fucks that up.
