People are starting to make noise about Rick Ross's U.O.E.N.O lyric about him bragging about slipping a molly in a womans drink so he could take her home and have sex with her while she didn't even know it.

He issued a pathetic apology, and now people are petitioning, and getting his song off the air. http://www.cnn.com/2013/04/04/showbiz/rick-ross-lyrics-apology/index.html

Reebock was even protested by angry women. http://thegrio.com/2013/04/05/rick-ross-lyrics-inpire-protest-at-reebok-store-in-nyc/
A concert was cancelled due to the lyrics: http://v103.cbslocal.com/2013/04/08/rick-ross-concert-cancelled-amidst-rape-protests/

Do you think they are going overboard, or is Rick Ross the scapegoat since rappers have been making reference to things of this nature for some time now, or is he the tipping point? Thoughts?

Ain't the first time a rapper talked about rape, but its the mainstream so rappers are sometimes held accountable. But I heard an underground rapper say "I'll rape your mother raw dog and give the bitch AIDS". Now ofcourse thats pure fantasy. As far as the Rick Ross thing something like that could really happen, someone may be stupid to try it because they been doing it.

I agree. I mean it has happened to many people several times over. Jeffrey Dahmer used to do that in order to feed his appetite, and there are many stories of that happening to women. However, didn't Jay Z say "Get a couple of chicks, get em to try to do E/ hopefully they'll menage before they reach my garage"? In this case, he wanted to persuade women to do drugs so he could get laid. He's mainstream and that song didn't get blasted for those lyrics.

Eminem made an entire album about shit like this for "Relapse" and won a Grammy for it.

What Ross is saying wouldn't be hard to achieve so that makes it scarier.

I haven't heard this song but if it's mixed in with ridiculous over the top lyrics it takes away the affect of it. If it's mixed in with serious subject matter its possible it could be more likely to influence some horny loser kid which would make up most of Rick Ross demographic.

I don't think the music should be censored though. If a line in a song makes you go rape a women you already had underlying issues

1st bold statement is true, however it does raise questions pertaining to censorship in general. I found an article called "Rap Music, Censorship and a real Life Conspiracy" that may dig deeper into the question about it being censored: http://raprehab.com/rap-music-censorship-and-a-real-life-conspiracy/

Cosign second bold comment. I remember an incident where a young ICP fan stabbed somebody a bunch of times and the kid blamed the music for his actions. ICP ended up being interviewed about it. They said something along the lines of 'that person is a sicko and to not buy their records' (I'm paraphrasing, but you get the idea.

It's pretty much as simple as reality vs. fantasy. Cartoonish depictions of violence/rape like Em on Relapse saying he'll fuck a girl with an umbrella and open it up while its inside her are very obviously over the top and not to be taken seriously (not to mention people are kind of desensitized to Em, remember how outraged everyone was when he first came out? its hard to sustain that level of fury for over a decade), but when a similarly high-profile artist endorses date-rape, saying "I slipped a molly in her champagne, she didn't even know it/ I took her home and I enjoyed it, she didn't even know it" it becomes an issue because it is a scenario that could very possibly occur, and there are still a stupidly large amount of people who don't consider date-rape to be rape at all. It also happens to be a hot button issue right now since its coming on the heels of that date-rape case from Steubenville, OH involving those HS football players.

Also, as far as the Jay line goes in comparison, it has to do with phrasing and context. In the song Jay-Z might be pressuring the girls to do the E, but they are doing it of their own volition (not being drugged), and they are already going home with him. Nothing is happening to them against their will in the song.

Unfortunately there are a lot of guys out there with a similar mentality. For them all females have it coming unless they are related to them then it's different.

They did a report on I think Dateline once where actors blatantly put something in a woman's drink and a lot of times people who saw it did nothing. The actor even told a group of guys he was going to do it. Their reaction was can I get some of that too.

The song is merely a representation of a larger problem, lack of empathy for other people. If they really want to make a difference focus on talking to groups most likely to be a participant or victim of this behavior. Put it in their mind early that it's not okay. Before date rape drugs were more prevalent it was basically how alcohol is/was used. It's not a coincidence that a lot of people's first sexual encounters involve inebriation. Does anyone remember the scene in Kids? If you had asked that kid if he was doing anything wrong he probably would've looked puzzled.

But as stated earlier if you do something because of some form of media then you already have problems.

Wait, how do you guys have sex with women? Is there another way to go about it? Molly is expensive so a cheaper way would be useful.

Molly...we used to call em beans.

Is x really popular again? Or did it just stay popular? Obviously my experimenting days are over but if I could do any hard drug again it would be x. Gives me chills just thinking about it...

I don't understand how you could rape someone by slipping them x tho. It doesnt knock you out or make you black out so thats out of the question. It does enhance your sensations but thats not going to make you fuck somebody unless its voluntary. The only way I could see it is if maybe the girl is voluntarily blowin up and down to fuck but then someone who she didn't intend on fucking takes advantage of her lowered inhibitions. And calling that rape is REALLY pushing it if you ask me. And yes I have daughters and I would be outraged if it happened to them. But I wouldn't be pointing fingers, I would accept the fact that my daughter fucked up big time.

Not like that would happen tho because my daughters are perfect angels...duh.

Well yeah, just like alcohol just lowers inhibitions...

but x never lost popularity, just hit the mainstream again thanks to Trinidad James... woooooo

I don't think people are really tripping of the reality of what x does, just the idea of I guess drugging a chick and then fucking her...

but like Lil Boosie said in an interview he likes to slip x up girl's buttholes before fucking... so it's I guess selective rage....

People have been mad about rap lyrics for a long time. This isn't the very first instance people have gotten up in arms about what a rapper said. I'm surprised that people are actually listening to his music after he pulled a CB4 in broad daylight. Doing something like that used to be frowned upon in hip hop, and now people want to act like they don't know. I'm surprised that the real Ricky Ross didn't roll up on him. Oh well, I never listened to Rick Ross's stuff or bought anything connected to him. However I can't help but wonder if rappers will stop talking all of that mess they talk in their songs. I mean, they are part of a "product" when they sign themselves to a brand. And if they ruin that brand by saying something that brand doesn't approve of, they will get fired. It's just like any other job.

That's what I see from the whole thing. It happens regardless if alcohol or any other drug is involved whether or not it's a man or a woman getting drugged. Again, it goes back to what Hazardous said, if a person does something based on a song, then something is definitely wrong with them.

And I had no idea people still listened to Lil Boosie.

Selective range, I don't know about that. I think Ross's quote got blown up because of that Steubenville rape case, not to mention what has been going on in India lately. Rape is a very hot topic right now, and Rick walked right into it.

Lol, that song is jammin but that album was a real hard listen. I was cringing the whole time. That dude is horribly talentless. Funny thing is, I used to know an Asian kid named James Trinidad, so that's who I picture when I hear the song and it makes me chuckle.

I don't know if it was necessary for anything other than stopping his fiscal bleeding (losing endorsements and what not), but even if it's just lip service, this is a pretty legit apology:

"Before I am an artist, I am a father, a son, and a brother to some of the most cherished women in the world. So for me to suggest in any way that harm and violation be brought to a woman is one of my biggest mistakes and regrets. As an artist, one of the most liberating things is being able to paint pictures with my words. But with that comes a great responsibility. And most recently, my choice of words was not only offensive, it does not reflect my true heart. And for this, I apologize. To every woman that has felt the sting of abuse, I apologize. I recognize that as an artist I have a voice and with that, the power of influence. To the young men who listen to my music, please know that using a substance to rob a woman of her right to make a choice is not only a crime, it's wrong and I do not encourage it. To my fans, I also apologize if I have disappointed you. I can only hope that this sparks a healthy dialogue and that I can contribute to it." —William Roberts (a.k.a "Rick Ross")

That does sound genuine but his first apology was trash. He basically brushed the whole thing off, and now that his pockets are hurting he want to be serious Get The Fuck Out He seriously didn't think about what he was doing when he wrote that. Even the artist he was working with threw him under the bus. They knew what they were rapping about. The other artist had to know what Rick Ross wrote before they recorded it and decided it was okay to let everybody else hear it. This is the first time where people have been able to successfully use their power to take funds from a rapper based on their lyrics simply because the issue doesn't just touch Black people, but it touches everybody. Unfortunately Rick Ross gets to be used as an example. To be honest, I don't feel bad for him. He should have came with that apology in the beginning.

Too little, too late.

Agreed, definitely too late. He was trying be cool with the dismissive, first 'apology' thinking this would just blow over like all other rap lyric controversies.

Lol that's the first thing I thought SRP, when I read it, but I'll give the dude the benefit of the doubt (I have no idea why, I'm not even remotely a fan of his).

In the back of my mind, I wonder if rape wasn't the hot topic right now, would Ross's lyrics be under scrutiny. It seems that not many people really cared too much when rappers were talking about violence and all kinds of mess about women up until this moment in time. This is the first time where not only Blacks got upset, so did everyone else. Where the hell was everybody before? Those rappers weren't just getting rich off of Black dollars (since Blacks only make up about 13% of the population, and a lot of them are locked up in jail according to the statistics people love to put out there every so often). They didn't seem to mind listening to those lyrics before, now all of a sudden, EVERYBODY is pissed?!

The writing is on the wall folks. The result of the sequence of events seems like a blatant "Fuck y'all foreal. We don't care about anything you do. We just want to watch, and we will pay for it. That is until you touch us. Then it's on." This Rick Ross Rape thing 320801

Maybe, I could just chalk it up to technological advances from then vs now, but rappers are still saying crazy stuff, so I don't think technology has anything to do with it really.

If they didnt complain bout that entire album in 92, its too late to be complaining bout anything else now. We live in the times of complaining about anything and every little thing til the point of blowing it out of proportion.

Seriously this shit is ridiculous. Pimping is far worse than rape in my opinion. If you get raped, it is most likely something that happens to you once (of course there are exceptions) but being pimped lasts your whole life, over and over again. And yes, there are voluntary pros (something that should be perfectly legal, IMO) but reality is that most of these girls are turned out too young to ever have a chance or they are forced into it in some way by whatever horrible circumstances they go through. And yet, there are endless amounts of songs glorifying pimping and no one gives a flying fuck.

I mean, shit, of course rape is bad and no one should be encouraging the act, but trying to zero in on Rick Ross over a relatively tame lyric by comparison is just retarded.

See, I thought I was alone on that one. It's why I don't really care for stories about pimps and hoes (minus Common's A Film Called Pimp).

Great point Wanduras. Pimping could be easily blamed on the parents of those involved. Usually the girl runs away and gets into it so it could be considered voluntary in some ways. Now prison pimping on the other hand.

For some reason, no one blames rape on the parents or family. Rape can happen in family settings, in fact that's where it is most common. Can rape lead to prostitution? I mean after all, there cases out there where the person had been raped by family, and later became a prostitute. In a lot of cases rape could be reported in the family, but the family flatly denies it instead of getting the person checked out. There are cases where a boy could get raped, but that hardly gets any light shined on it mostly due to stereotypes (guy gets raped by guy= gay. Guy gets raped by girl = doesn't matter, had sex)

Wait, Molly is X? I thought it was quaaludes or something.

Anyway this whole thing is blown way out of proportion. And the feminist lobby is pretty much the worst and most annoying lobby in the U.S. that doesn't represent a crooked corporation.

Ross literally could have rapped "I'll kidnap your kids and kill them" instead of this line and nobody gives a fuck. So save your outrage for something that matters.
