| Neither: I respect their legendary status for sure. But I simply don't listen to them enough to consider them top 100 material, personally. |

| Like Allen I respect their Legendary Status, but I think even Grandmaster Flash would agree that they're not in the top 50 or 100 by any means. |

| If you fully understand hip hop and what hip hop is, there's no way you don't have these guy's in your top 50-100. |

| I think they are in the top 200 of all-time
very influential and I think it's between Jam Master Jay and Grandmaster Flash as too who is the GOAT of the Dj's but I actually agree that their OVERALL catalog is a little thin
but they did create the "message" rap genre with the all-time classic song "the message"
and of course Flash's contributions on the wheels of steel are legendary...he basically created scratching and mixing...Kool Herc was not scratching nor mixing but just playing records and talking over them...Flash is the one who added showmanship to it
All this said I've got them in the top 200 of all-time IMO!

"The Message" is a phenomenal hip-hop record. I retrospectively understand the influence they have had. But really, if you look at the material they later released, I'm not sure how one could say they are "phenomenal" records. I own a few: by 1985 when they released "They Said It Couldn't Be Done" they already sounded dated. Still a pretty good album. But great? Same thing with "The Source". "On the Strength" was utterly weak IMO. I'm not saying it's all wack, but they did not stay up on the game like many artists that have come and gone. Their time at the top was short. Again, that's looking at the material they actually recorded without going into their legacy. Moreover, I would not discredit those for picking "neither" for personally not spinning those records. There are many ways to interpret Kev's game here. And not everyone is trying to be 100% objective. They are trying to put a little of themselves out there as well. |

| Just for "The Message" alone they should be Top 100. That song is high on everyone's list of all time great songs (my personal top song) and it's responsible for the "reality rap" genre that so many people (including us in the forum) love so much.
Had Melle Mel had more longevity in the rap game, I would have voted them Top 50 because he was a highly skilled lyricist. But they didn't stay together very long, so I voted them in the Top 100.
On a side note. If the number of Top 50 AND Top 100 votes outnumber the neither votes, then that artist should be in the Top 100. |

| Yeah Pounds they are top 200 of all-time to me, mainly based on their overall catalog like you previously mentioned, I own those joints as well man and some of it is a bit thin
but I wanted to speak on that part about where you said some heads aren't being 100% objective, that they are trying to put a little of themselves out there as well
see to me that's the shit that's going to skew the votes all up..
heads who vote on shit that they have absolutely no clue about or very little clue fucks up the final numbers
I know you own some of that "old" school Flash Pounds and I do as well but how many other heads on here do?? I wonder what their basing their vote on??
that's like me voting on Big Jess whom I have no clue about...if I saw his name I would pass on voting because I don't have enough information to cast a vote!!
I'm not targeting you Pounds I've already addressed this before man!

I'm not targeting you Pounds I've already addressed this before man! I agree. But it's pretty much impossible to know what those people are thinking. For instance. I objectively think Common is a top 100 rapper. But I honestly voted neither, because there are 100 rappers I like and spin more (not much more though). I like his music, but I just don't feel it all the time, as is the case with many others. To some people impact is extremely important, where I focus on the content and often times ignore the "impact" of an artist. I think from now on I will just state my "objective" & "personal" viewpoints and make sure they are separated. If the votes are different, I'm not sure how I'd vote. lol...we'll see. |

| Powell, with the not being 100% objective comment, I don't think he meant that people haven't heard the material. I think it was more along the lines of a person not liking the material they've actually heard from a rapper. | |
