I'm not trying to diss anyone or anything - just wondering where or when do you usually think someone has earned their stripes in this hip-hop music? Will you not respect someone's opinion if they haven't at least heard Illmatic? Or been bumping the music for a few years? Does it vary? etc.

Well I've been listening for about 3 years and I think I have pretty decent credentials. I'd say once you've got all the major impacts and influences down packed you should be good to go.

As long as you've heard Soulja Boy, you are respected

I think time is the deciding factor when you have seen different phases the art has went through. Also anybody stuck on one coast or coastal sound it is hard to listen to their opinion on rap.

When? Well, if you're talking to Powell, I'm not sure even 10% of the posters have earned their credentials on this forum...lol...I kid Powell, but sometimes I wonder...

My thoughts...once you've discovered pioneers from the beginning of rap, to the golden age, to the "2nd golden age", to the commercial exploitation era, to the over saturated state it's in today...and you understand it all....basically know your history and the path hip-hop has taken since it's inception. Also, within all these factors, you can respect sounds from a variety of, or all regions (of at least America).

These aren't really my rules or nothing, but they are things I've learned throughout my journey into hip-hop and have made me understand it from more angles.

i cosign this, i think you have to know the pioneers and the early years and how hip hop has changed throughout its history, also you need to have listened to a lot of diverse artists whether you like them or not, you have to learn to appreciate the different styles as well

I say that you've DEFINITELY gotta do your homework when it comes to the history of the rap game. You've got to know your pioneers and realize that they're the ones who made it possible for us to have seen the Golden Ages of hip-hop and made it evolve into a respected music genre.

Also, everyone needs to branch out and listen to artists from EVERY coast. Granted, you're not gonna like every artist, but at least be willing to check artists out no matter where they're from. There is dopeness no matter where you go on the map.

There are many more things I could add, but those are two of the most important things that any TRUE hip-hop fan must realize.

I agree. So many folks get stuck on what coast, sound or style is better that they miss out on a whole lot of potentially dope music. I know one thing, my collection has greatly expanded since I've been on the amazon forum and this one.

Well I guess I've yet to earn my hip hop credentials since I haven't dug that deeply into 80s hip hop and I admittedly don't know that much about the Golden Age. Age plays a factor here I think. But since I joined here I've discovered some really dope artists that I wouldn't have known existed if it wasn't for the people here. I've learned a lot about the culture from you guys as well.

I'll co-sign this..its always interesting to get in a true conversation with someone at say, a record store, talking about stuff youve only discussed on a forum. When you can offer personal insight(doesnt have to be rolling stone-quality knowledge either) on any era and actively discuss likes or dislikes-then why wouldnt you call yourself a full-fledged hip-hop head?

hmmm when do your "earn" your hip-hop credentials??

well the word hip-hop encompasses the entire culture IMO...it's more than just thinking you know the music, although that is a major part of it...you need to know hip-hop culture history...you need to know about the different phases in terms of fashion, dances, styles, grafitti, monumental moments..etc..etc

even if you weren't lucky enough to have experienced these moments you should be able to readily identify most of them...

as far as the music side of the culture well to me if you not well versed with such groups/emcees such as:

In no particular order:

NWA
2Pac
PE
Brand Nubian
The Pharcyde
Outkast
UGK
Kool G Rap
LL Cool J
Ultramagnetic MC's
Heavy D and The Boyz
Run-D.M.C.
A Tribe Called Quest
Wu-Tang Clan
EPMD
Gangstarr
Mantronix
Marley Marl
Rick Rubin
Bone Thugs
Cypress Hill
Redman
Rob Base/E-Z Rock
Stetsasonic
The Roots
The Geto Boys
Biggie
KRS-One
Nas
Big Daddy Kane
Jay-Z
Heiro
Goodie Mob
2 Live Crew
MC Lyte
Salt-N-Pepa
Jungle Brothers
Afrika Bambaataa
Kool Herc
Grandmaster Flash/Furious Five
Treacherous Three
Sugarhill Gang
Pete Rock/C.L Smooth
Cash Money
3rd Bass
Trick Daddy
Eminem
Beastie Boys
Teddy Riley
Doug E.Fresh/Slick Rick
Whodini
Chubb Rock
Special Ed
The Coup
Dj Quik (he's someone I need to learn more about)
Diddy
Ball and MJG
3-6 Mafia
Common
Twista
Naughty By Nature

and then you bring your full or damn near full knowledge of all of those acts above and combine it with your knowledge of these newer acts and underground acts..then you have begun to become an encylopedia of hip-hop knowledge and the beauty of all of that is that you NEVER stop learning about hip-hop that you don't know about from various parts of the country.....

I don't care if your just 21 years old if you don't have a decent knowledge of say Heavy D and The Boyz or NWA then you need to do more homework on the music end...the groups I listed above as well as some I did not list are basically HIP-HOP music from pretty much the beginning, right on through the Golden Ages and up until these newer and underground groups.....their influences are more than likely found in the list up above...whether you like every group/emcee listed or not you should still have heard a few albums from them and have a working knowledge on them...the only one from the list up above that I need work on is Dj Quik...and I own his debut album but that is it.....everyone else listed and more not listed is a part of my collection

I've got to give a big respect shout-out to Pounds on his credentials...he just started listening in 2000 but his knowledge and hip-hop collection is pretty damn VAST....he has truly done his homework on the music side of the game...I'm not sure about his overall knowledge of the culture in terms of the fashion and dance and graf..etc side of things but he has done well on the music side.....

Thanks Powell, but I am missing a big handful of the old culture through movies and music videos (though "I Love The 80s" does help...lol). Seems like when everyone makes a thread about hip-hop movies, I've seen just a couple (that's every movie thread actually). I love the art of graffiti (all art actually). I only dance when I'm drunk and I wouldn't exactly call it hip-hop dancing...not sure if you can call it much more than pathetic...that's why I find the drunkest girl out there to dance with...lol. Fashion? I wear a hip-hop shirt nearly every day...lol...otherwise I'm a t-shirt & jeans guy and always have been.

Let's see if I can think of them all...

Kanser/Interlock: Support Broke Rappers
Bicasso
Lickyiam
Living Legends
Wu-Tang
Run-DMC
Beastie Boys
Eazy-E
Unknown Prophets
Knonam

That's the current selection, but they are always getting rotated in and out when they got too many holes in them...lol. Actually even before I got into hip-hop, I wore music shirt everyday anyway. So technically, my style has never changed with the music. lol

Oh, and I also have an obsession with cassette tapes. I have at least 4 shirts with pictures of cassettes on them...mostly joke christmas gifts from friends, but hey, I wear 'em. lol

You earn your hip hop credentials when you can't afford to fill your shitty car up because you keep buying more cd's than you really have time to listen to....

The only acts I don't own anything from on D. Powell list are:
Mantronix
Rob Base/E-Z Rock
MC Lyte
Afrika Bambaataa
Kool Herc
Grandmaster Flash/Furious Five
Treacherous Three
Sugarhill Gang
Trick Daddy
Whodini
Chubb Rock
3-6 Mafia
Twista

I'm slacking on the old school
Can I get some recommendations for these??

I'd say start with Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five. They have a really goo comprehensive 2 disc definitive collection, and it's fairly cheap.

http://www.amazon.com/Definitive-Groove-Collection-Grandmaster-Flash/dp/B000GGSM2G/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1254271561&sr=8-12

I own stuff from all of these artists (except Trick Daddy & 3-6 Mafia). The "The Sugar Hill Records Story" 5-CD set encompasses a wealth of that old school stuff on that list + a lot more. But I agree with Terry as well...a good Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five "Best Of" is a good place to start, if not that box set.

Mantronix? Look no further than "The Album" (1985) for starters. However, you may not dig the electro stylings of Kurtis Mantronik. I love it, Kurtis is up there on my producer list (Esco, I hope you're taking notes). 5 stars all around to me. Their sophomore album "Music Madness" is 4.5 stars in my book.

Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock? They only got one album..."It Takes Two". I'd probably give that 4.5-5 stars. A classic pop-rap album, but Rob Base had nice mic skills IMO.

MC Lyte? "Lyte As A Rock" is definitely her best IMO.

Whodini? "Escape" for sure. Most classic.

Chubb Rock? My favorite is "And the Winner Is..." but "The One" is also a favorite I believe...also dope.

Has anyone checked out Grandmaster Flash's new album "The Bridge"? Shit's pretty dope, classic emcees with them throw-back beats.

And back in the day, I think I was up to about 400 or so cassettes in my hip hop library!

i think that you must have dedicated a lot of time and effort into hearing all you can in the hip hop scene to be considered a real head. whether you like one style or many styles you must be educated in all styles to voice an opinion worth considering.

And i have the bridge album, it has some dope tracks on it and some i could do with out. worth checking out tho.

I have The Bridge. It has some good tracks on it near the last half of it, and some are wack. I might have to revisit it again so I can remember the good tracks. Overall, I remember the album not being very re playable.

I think you should revisit that album a.scott.

Check this out. The true definition of a DJ - with actual vinyl. This is a great representation of one of the elements of the Hip Hop culture - Deejaying.
