Top 100 for El-P. Company Flow was a groundbreaking record, and maybe to a lesser extent, so was Fantastic Damage. His newer album is dope as well. Not to mention he's helped shape the newer wave of underground hip-hop with his brand of production, and of course the very successful Def Jux.

Top 50. Funcrusher Plus is an essential album, it played a huge part in shaping underground Hip-Hop, and I don't know about what anyone else thinks, but that's where the greatest Hip-Hop music has been coming from for the last decade. He's consistently been at the forefront of that. He's maintained the same high level with Fantastic Damage, and I'll Sleep When You're Dead, plus his work on other great albums, like The Cold Vein, and I Phantom.

In addition, Bigg Jus has had some impressive solo work.

If the Fugees didn't make it for me then these guys can forget it...lol

Company Flow was a very dope album but SO WHAT...the total scores for this outfit come in way too low for me to say they are a top 100 hip-hop act of all-time

neither is the way to go IMO

So what? Company Flow is just a small portion of El-P's contributions to hip-hop. He's got more business being in the top 100 than The Fugees IMO.

Agreed. I didn't even take into account his work. With that, and Mr. Len's work, it gets closer to top 50 IMO.

I have no clue. Maybe Powell is thinking this poll is for Company Flow alone. Not sure how you can discount El-P's undeniable contributions to hip-hop. Dude changed the game forever....even if it wasn't as big as other golden age pioneers....it's still VERY noteworthy.

Alan can we at least agree that Company Flow is El-P's best contribution to hip-hop?? his most known? recognized? masterpiece??

in other words does he have any work that is better than Company Flow?? that one is going to be tough for him to beat IMO

No we cannot agree on that, Powell.

El-P's biggest contribution to hip-hop is Definitive Jux. It started with Co Flow, but expanded into something MUCH bigger. El-P is by far a better producer nowadays, and he's shown that with not only his solo work, but also production on other albums on the label that have also seen much critical acclaim. Really, he started a movement that is still widely respected. That is definitely a much bigger point than Co Flow's album.

Oh, and to answer that, I would suspect A LOT of people would like his solo debut "Fantastic Damage" more (much more in some cases) than Company Flow's "Funcrusher Plus", which is a 5 star classic IMO.

Alright, just know it's different...experimental...inventive. But it's also pretty hardcore...in a different way. It does bang throughout IMO. If you liked Co Flow, you should like it. When you here this, I think you will respect the position El-P has elevated himself too. Another critically acclaimed album...perhaps and underground classic since the fanfare is so massive, would be Cannibal Ox "The Cold Vein". This may be the biggest record from the entire label....(?). I personally like El-P's record more.

Here's a couple of dope cuts off it:

El-P - Stepfather Factory (VIDEO)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Acgr18qpcPM

El-P Deep Space 9mm (VIDEO)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNJFq6VjHJI

El-P ft. Vast - Dr Hell no and the praying mantus (AUDIO)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1zOTgwIet0

The last one may be my favorite. Vast does a nice job on it.

Don't get Fantastic Damage, Powell. There is no way in hell you will like that album, or anything El-P did after that. I'm not trying to pick a battle with you or be a smart ass. I'm trying to save you some money.

Don't get me wrong, I think he is definitely top 50, but I would never expect you to agree with that. People have different tastes, that's why there's a ballot. Otherwise Kevin would just list his top 100 and we'd all agree.

Parker, did you read the comments? Powell likes Company Flow. I think that's enough reason to check out El-P's solo stuff.

HOWEVER, I do think you (Powell) should listen/watch the Youtube clips before ordering.

Top 50 though huh? I can see that. If I was still spinning more hip-hop of this sound, I'd be inclined to give him top 50 as well.

I didn't see that he liked Company Flow. I thought he was just giving credit for the underground impact.

Yeah, I gotta admit, Fantastic Damage is basically a continuation of Funcrusher. I do not think Powell would be down with CanOx or ISWYD, though. I'm surprised he likes Company Flow so I could be wrong. I think these albums represent a leap in style for El-P, though.

Hell yeah Top 50. The early stuff was groundbreaking. ISWYD is an epic science-fiction masterpiece, scrutinizing today's social ills. The production on Hell's Winter hasn't even been mentioned yet.

Let's not forget that he has fostered an entire subgenre of hip hop under the DefJux label.

El-P is no slouch, on any front.

Maybe so. I'm not sure if Powell will like it. It is all NEW school with very little old school aesthetic. The quality is there, but I'm not sure if Powell will be all about the experimentation.

Maybe Powell was just saying Co Flow was groundbreaking, but I've seen him give it props a few times before. So I think he likes it.

I'll Sleep When You're Dead is a great album as well. I must admit I like the dirtier more in your face production (which was partly due to his rhyme style as well) on Fantastic Damage. Both make me wish he'd make more albums. And you're right...he did produce 4 bangers on Hell's Winter, though I liked the DJ Shadow and RJD2 cuts the most.

They're dope, but they don't have the noteriety or classic material to be on this list IMO, so I voted neither.

Bullshit on both accounts, I love how you guys decide when you wanna play "let's talk something we know nothing about" and yet try to tell other people they can't possibly comprehend how great the first Spoonie G record was because they weren't even twinkles in their father's eyes at that time. Good call hypocrites.

Want some cheese to go with that whine N3R0?

It seems that the only fuckin people that get criticized by the way votes go are me, Powell, and to a lesser extent Pounds. It's lame, it really is.

I like El-P and Company Flow, but realistically, there are 100 acts that I would vote over them based on the total package (consistency, lyricism, classic material, noteriety, influence). That's why I couldn't give them the nod.

Say what you will about me, but at least I'm man enough to give reasons behind what I do. Not that I owe it to anybody, just thought I'd be insightful.

I'm not familiar with El-P's work, but he seems to have the classics and impact that most people would look for. The only question would be do you really like that brand of hip hop?

yes, very "insightful". That's exactly how I'd describe what you do.

And actually, I'm just calling bullshit. Ya'll are the motherfuckers that WHINE when people don't like what you do. You make them feel childish and ignorant because they don't have gray hair and saggin balls. Well guess what, it works both ways pal and you can't know everything. You guys started the criticizing with your claims of "ignorant" this and "not old enough" that so don't pout now. Everything you said in that post was bullshit. How many company flow albums are there? How many members? What are there names? What did they do after the group broke up? I give reasons behind my thoughts every time, does that make me "insightful"?

Really KJ? I mean, I have no problem with you or Powell voting neither for personal reasons...because you simply don't like the albums. But let's take a look at it realistically. You're simply wrong by saying that El-P/Co Flow does not have notoriety or classic material. Company Flow, solo El-P records, and a number of records dropped on Def Jux have had significant critical and fan acclaim. And there are plenty of folks calling these records classics. Tons in fact. Def Jux has got to be one of the most successful independent hip-hop labels post-2000, and there's a reason for it. There will not be consensus classics nowadays due to saturation of the industry. So for El-P/Def Jux to get this sort of acclaim with the type of hip-hop they make nowadays, brings tons of notoriety to the table IMO.

Okay Alan, of the links you gave me off of youtube the only one I'm really feeling is Dr. Hell No and the praying mantus....

I think that Company Flow is probably EL-P's best effort man...again this is my opinion but maybe I need to hear more...I'll have that other album by the end of next week so I'll be able to give you a better idea of my thoughts on it then...

as for right now there's still no way I could see EL-P as a top 100 hip-hop act OF ALL TIME...I think I take that list more seriously then other folks on here..lol

they want Canibus on the damn list, EL-P on the list, Ras Kass on the list, and a bunch of other mummies, dudes that can probably barely give a good hip-hop show let alone being called one of the greatest hip-hop acts of all-time which is exactly what a top 100 of all-time list means to me...they don't vote for people like Salt-N-Pepa or MC Lyte because of their fear of vagina (which by the way is quite scary)...lol or heads like Brand Nubian have to struggle to get in, I mean these emcees and groups have done way more for hip-hop than a Canibus or a Chino XL or a EL-P...these guys are standouts only in your own "underground" minds...lol

it's quite funny N3RO...yeah I'm calling you out since you love my name so damn much...lol

and anyone else who the shoe fits..fuck it

they call Biggie overrated but EL-P is a top 100 hip-hop act OF ALL-TIME????

I say loud and proud: GET THE FUCK OUTTA HERE WITH THAT BULLSHIT!!

go study some more hip-hop culture and then holla at me.....

Comparing El-P to Canibus or Chino XL is beyond silly. All they have in common is that they're underground rappers.

i voted neither on el-p, but i think some of the connections you make are "off kilter" at best powell. i have always voted actual skill and personal preference first and foremost, not what someone has done for the culture. lil' wayne has done more to gain notoriety and change the culture than 95% of rappers, yet im not going to congratulate those accomplishments.

and as for brand nubian...one classic album pal, after that, who cares. they didnt do shit for hiphop man.

and sadat x is in my top 50 emcees of all time.

You're the fucking hypocrite from what I see. You're cryin like a little bitch because I voted against someone you love. From what I see, several others voted against them as well, so are you gonna bitch them out too? All I can do is laugh at you and this ignorant response. You're the one trying to make people feel bad because they don't consider every white rapper a fuckin GOAT! Go change your tampon little girl.

Brand Nubian destroys El-P, Canibus, Chino XL and all these other mummies in terms of importance to hip-hop culture and quite easily too....stop it Steve..

Powell, I've done a lot of studying as you know. But I still feel El-P is objectively top 100. And personally, I find it hard to believe you actually liked Company Flow very much. You may have had respect for the record, but did you actually spin it a lot? Did you have favorite tracks? I mean, it's a very menacing nearly-80 minute long masterwork. Very complex. You will not see the beauty in it after 1 listen. Anyway, just like that sonically textured record, El-P's solo material takes TIME to dissect. And I don't mean it takes time to enjoy either. I mean the more you spin it, the more you end up liking it and appreciating it. That's El-P in a nut shell. So I do think you need to hear more to catch what everyone else voting top 50 and top 100 are saying. Again, I have no problem with you disagreeing because you simply don't like his records very much. That is at least respectable. But to tell people who know all his material what little you know about him and then label these votes "bullshit" is not that cool. I take this top 100 seriously too. I'm sure most of the regulars, if not everybody does. That's why we argue over petty shit like this daily. lol

No one else pretends that they're high and mighty, KJ, or pretends that their vote is the only one that should matter.

Yeah, it's definitely a white thing...I love how you have 3 things you say to me.

I stated my reasons why I don't like the way you vote, period. Not whatever bullshit excuse you have.

And I'm really glad I'm not a lil girl cuz I'm already white and chubby so that'd make me 3 for 3 on your type of chick. But you can still fantasize Wink

They've done more for hip-hop overall than El-P. I like El/Company Flow, but there are SEVERAL acts who didn't make this list whom I'd rank over them.

Anybody that can't objectively understand that is a blind fanboy like N3R0.

And Steve, Sadat X is dope, but Grand Puba has much more noteriety.

Co sign Powell, I have heard some El P and I respect his originality and the luv he gets from the fans but he is not my style so that is one reason I voted neither. The other reason I voted Neither is because if King Tee, GMF & Furious 5, SNP, Too Short, and some of the others aren't guess what? If Mobb Deep, Snoop, Ice T, Lyte, NBN, and others are top 100 guess what?

Jeff stop your weeping bias is alwys going to creep in and we are always going to whine and moan when something we want to go our way doesn't. We luv this shit!
