PostSubject: Biggie Smalls--The most overrated entertainer ever.   Mon 25 Jan 2010, 5:46 pm

I never thought ReadyToDie was a classic. The beats were A material but Biggie came up short lyrically. As far as LifeAfterDeath, well, I know Biggie fans that were underwhelmed by that album and thought it was way too poppy. I didn't like LAD at all. Biggie for some reason or another got all this acclaim straight out the gate. He just had the Puff Daddy train of momentum behind him and became the center piece of a corperate label. Tupac was by far a superior artist. Even though he resorted to the same antics of Biggie...Pac was a true poet. Pac said stuff that really got at a bunny's soul. He didn't start out with a bang, cause he was waaay to militant. He sparked a lot of controversy as Biggie did not. BIG albums were garnered strictly for maximum profit. Pop single after pop single. Their was nothing rebellious or innovative about his music. If anything his music was a prelude to the death of hip hop.

Biggie was actually donned GOAT by Source Magazine. And both his albums got 5 mics. All those rappers aphilliated with Biggie , LilKim,Lil Ceasar,P.Diddy, Mase, are straight garbage. Biggie Smalls legacy is not even greater than Megalon's in my opinion. And to think they made a movie of him. Its great they told his story but there are other stories that need to be told. Like the story of Kool Herc, the godfather of hip hop. This guy is actually a immigrant from Jamaica, who for a stint was addicted to crack real bad, but shook that bad habit. But yet fuckin' Emenem got a movie. And Tupac never got the movie he deserved. There was one low-budget that was suppose to be about Tupac.

And people wondered why Biggie didn't have much recorded material when he died. Thats cause Puff controlled everything he did.

Word to the grandma, I co-sign most of Trotter's post, although I do think 'Ready To Die' is a classic.

EDIT: and I also disagree on his take on Megalon's legacy, Biggie>>>>>Megalon

Hey KJ DO NOT get riled up man....I wanted to start with that statement first and foremost

secondly this is all of course Trotter's opinion and he has every right to think this way....no problems yet...

IN MY OPINION Biggie is one of the greatest emcees to EVER do it easily...I really don't care what Trotter or anyone else says regarding this.....I know what I've heard from this man and I've heard nothing but greatness...he completely changed the hip-hop game and he's a legend and first ballot hip-hop hall of famer for me!

Not really. Tommy Gunn would destroy Biggie in a battle if he was still alive. Tommy is multi-faceted. No rapper is realer. It cause of jail time that stagnated his career. Tommy doesn't have a major label backing him. If Biggie never linked up with P,Diddy you wouldn't know who he was. Tommy never dropped any silly pop-bopper single like OneMoreChance, that song is trash. Tommy only drops raw shit. If you ever heard the song OneInAMillion, you'd know BIG couldn't even come close to it.

Axtually I still think you maybe V.Lopez. This is the sole reason Steve had a problem ith you.

Monsta Island Czars >>>>>>Junior MAFIA.

Biggie is the sole reason why Lil Kim is popular. Can you be proud of that?

Theres a ton of emcees that are superior to Biggie like Big L, Percee P, and Poetic from GraveDiggaz (RIP)

Biggie is overrated, but he's not that overrated. He dropped a classic and is an iconic figure in the hip hop community. As for the most overrated entertainers ever, let's talk Elvis, The Beatles, and John Wayne.

Fuck Steve's bitch ass, he's gone!

I'll take Lil Kim and Lil Cease over those cartoonish clowns ANYDAY!!

And NONE of the MC's you mentioned are better than Biggie. I like Big L and Poetic but neither are on Biggie's level. Percee P?? He wasn't even considered an elite MC back then! Like I said.....

Honestly Trotter IN MY OPINION Tommy Gunn is WACK...there I said it...dude is completely WACK again IN MY OPINION...his voice is garbage...his flow is lifeless...his lyrics are mediorce...overall on a scale of one(being the worse) to ten(being the best)..I've got him at about a 2..he's not memorable, and has done nothing on a grand scale to either change nor add to the hip-hop game IN MY OPINION!

Ready to die = Classic
Life after death = 2.5 star album at best

when people say the doc or big l or oc should be in the top 25 all time people laugh and say not enough classic material. you cant get in on only a few albums. well big had 1 classic. lots of people say LAD is classic and you ask them why they rate it that way. and they come up with some meaningless answer like you had to be there at the time it came out, it was important. like thats means nothing when you are talking music quality. its a bullshit answer

Life After Death was an excellent album. I could honestly play it from front to back without skipping any tracks. Easily the best hip-hop double album of all time IMO.

Life After Death is a classic IMO Cory...Why??

Somebody's Gotta Die
Hypnotize
Kick In The Door
Fuck You Tonight
Last Days
I Love The Dough
What's Beef?
B.I.G. Interlude
Mo Money Mo Problems
N*i*g*g*a*s* Bleed
I Got A Story To Tell
Notorious Thugs
Miss U
Another
Going Back To Cali
Ten Crack Commandments
Playa Hater (hey fellas it's a joke, calm down)
Nasty Boy
Sky's The Limit
The World Is Filled
My Downfall
Long Kiss Goodnight
You're Nobody(Til Somebody Kills You)

these are the reasons why I think it's a 5 star classic effort...it doesn't matter if you were there then or not IN MY OPINION...who cares about that Cory?? the music and lyrics are why for me this is an all-time effort man....whether you agree with that or not is your opinion but I'm just giving you mine!

5 star classic album from a 5 star classic artist...plain and simple IN MY OPINION!

Its dang not damn. And Tommy Gunn is fire. You and Powell aren't exactly connoisseurs of fine hip hop. What dope recs have anyone of you guys made on this forum or Amazon? Shaun,Alan, Slang, Norfeest, Kid Joe, all made dope recs, finding about rappers no ones heard about. But you guys don't have any recs. Why is that? Your taste in hip hop don't hold water. Its quite bland. Tommy Gunn has a definitive style. Its really that Kool G Rap style on speed. MIC's cult following is strong. And now I hear MFDoom and MF Grimm is on cool terms working with each other, that means MIC will be reinstated.

Junior Mafia were ass-clowns even back in 96'. You woulda found more hardrocks rocking Queen Latifah in 96-97 than Junior Mafia

When LAD dropped and the Source gave it 5 mics it got a fury of criticism. This is when the Source still held weight and they actually posted negative feedback from their readers. Majority of readers said it was a bullshit call. And KJ thinks its better than WU Forever? Don't drink the salt water, kid.

Yeah I can understand that, well it wasn't hard to see why when I stop to think about it. I suppose if he was upsetting enough people and/or driving others away from wanting to participate in discussion because of flagrant disregard of manners and respect and everything else... then yeah. He didn't really seem to learn any lessons come to think of it...

hahahahaha@ Tran jokes... I know really you hold him dear to your heart Norf Big Grin

Tran the Akira is one of my fav's... woulda been in my list on Terry's thread but I chose to leave Manga out... Otherwise they would be half my list.. Awesome movie though, I like the cyberpunk type stuff.

Junior Mafia were ass-clowns even back in 96'. You woulda found more hardrocks rocking Queen Latifah in 96-97 than Junior Mafia

I've rec'ed old school stuff to Terry before (Just-Ice I think) and maybe Mantronix (not sure) but I don't rec on this forum Trotter...I've received many recs though some that I like (from Pounds and Kev a few times...SRP has sent me a few things here and there like Casual) KJ rec'ed me the completely BANGIN AG and OC-Oasis joint, Slang always recs the new shit, but you don't rec a bunch either my dude and I wouldn't take any of your recs anyway...your dedication to Tommy Gunn's nutsack is disgusting my dude...you literally worship the mans testicles and now your upset because IN MY OPINION that dude is straddling the wack fence....he's not impressive in the least...most heads with two ears can hear that....lol...comparing that lifeless dude to Kool G Rap proves my point...that mummy couldn't hold G Rap's old boxers IN MY OPINION...

so far you've said he's better than Biggie and he's up to Kool G Rap in terms of his style and that of course is Trotter's opinion and that is all good

Powell's opinion is that Tommy Gunn is borderline wack...his flow is deceased...his voice is choppy, and his lyrics are mediorce...for me that describes your boy Tommy Gunn!

What a lively discussion.

My two cents...Biggie is not the most overrated rapper ever... let alone entertainer...I wouldn't really call him overrated as a rapper... certainly he had the talent to deserve the praise...but I do think he is over exalted and gets a pass on certain things due to his early death....

for overrated rappers of all time I think we would have to look into the Game, Canibus, and Lil' Wayne

Putting Megalon and Big in the same sentence is absurd imo. I think even Megalon would tell you that himself.

I do agree Big is overrated at times but that happens when you are one of the best. Its the gift and the curse. Ask Jay-Z, Rakim, Nas, Pac, and any other rapper accused of being overrated in abundance.

Naw. Rakim was never overrated. BIG is a rapper that obtained the status of GOAT in such a short period of time due to some pop-bopper singles. Pac earned his title.

."your dedication to Tommy Gunn's nutsack is disgusting my dude.."

No. I said before Tommy "Megalon" Gunn was sorta my icon or trademark of measuring a true emcee. If a Penny For Your Thoughts had a major label behind him you'd go apeshit over him.
All the Monsta Island Czars dropped nearly classic album with no major labels backing them. You saying Tommy Gunn is wack holds no weight when A Penny For Thoughts on CD runs for about 50.00 on Amazon. But you never listened to him cause your analysis is bullshit. You never heard Art Of Flowing. Tommy's skill is even co-signed by Panama Jack. P.Jack is a legendary hype man in NY clubs.

Also, I make dope recs all the time. Whether people pay attention to them or not is not my fault. BusDriver,Super Chron Bros, Invissabul Men, Mark Speqkt's I co-signed their albums last year. I keep my nose to the ground. My recs are unquestionable

LMAOOOOO!

Umm Trotter your so in love with Tommy your not hearing me man....IN MY OPINION Tommy Gunn is not dope! he is NOT impressive to me...I don't give a shit if he was on Warner Bros...the Disney Channel and Def Jam combined...dude is not impressive...he is nowhere near Biggie's level...he can't look at Kool G Rap...I mean those thoughts are completely your opinion and you have a right to think that....I think Tommy Gunn is wack or close to it....

You think my analysis is no good because I'm not in love with him like you are..lol...who cares...it's my opinion and this is what I think about him

as for your "recs"...well I listened to some Busdriver and fell the fuck asleep, after hearing him and Tommy Gunn I immediately cancelled my subscription to your "rec's"....that dude(Busdriver) is wack too IN MY OPINION...Trotter we have different tastes in hip-hop and that's okay man....

To me Rakim has always been overrated by mostly east coast raised cats and golden agers.

I won't deny that the bad boy machine is a factor in Big's success and global props but Big is a legend mainly because of his flow, voice, delivery, and lyrics. If Big was just major because of some "pop bopper singles" he would not be as praised or idolized as he is. He would be Hammer or Fresh Prince.

I agree with what you said about Biggie but I completely disagree with what you said about Rakim.

Rakim was a lyrical genius, hence the reason why he's the most quoted MC of all time.

As for Trotter's boy Busdriver. He should have just stuck to driving a bus!

Rakim is not a lyrical genius imo. He is more flow and delivery to me with above average to good lyrics. I think at one point Ra may have been a "lyrical genius" when the 1st golden era emcess reign was slippin. I mean when comparing Ra to Kurtis Blow, Fat Boys, RUNDMC, Beastie Boys, Just Ice, 2 Live Crew, early Ice T, Short, Sugahill Gang, etc etc I would think he's a lyrical genius also.

So now your so upset about Tommy that you think you "know" more than me about artists that I love and respect huh??

Ummm Trotter if you actually have that as your opinion then that is fine...because that is your opinion..my opinion is that you don't know as much as you think you do...if you believe that Tommy Gunn is a seriously dope hip-hop artist then you don't know as much as you think you do...if you believe that Busdriver is dope then IN MY OPINION you really don't know as much as you pretend to know...again this is all my opinion on things....

As for my boy Rakim...IN MY OPINION he is a lyrical genius...his flow changed hip-hop...his rhyme cadence made other emcees re-think what they needed to do to become successful...his voice is bananas....I mean this dude is legend for a reason...samething with regards to Biggie...KRS-One...Jay-Z....Ice Cube....LL Cool J....Nas....Chuck D...Big Daddy Kane...Kool G Rap....my entire top 10 emcees of all-time....IN MY OPINION

these are the dudes that made Tommy Boy want to think about becoming an emcee IN MY OPINION

but Tommy missed it when they passed the torch his way IN MY OPINION!

C'Mon Son, GTFOH with that bullshit!!!

Rakim was AHEAD of his time. I know you're not a fan of his but dude is a BEAST on the mic. Even to this day, I don't see many cats fuckin with the lines he dropped on his first four albums, and even his 5th one for that matter. His music is timeless.

I agree that Rakim was ahead of his time and that is where my theory lies and unfolds. He stood out amongst the talent level of the 80's where you only had Big Daddy Kane and KRS One really making innovative moves lyrically in the 80's. I know there were plenty of other lyrical rappers that started in the 80's but none stood out soley for their lyrics like these 3. In the 90's they meet a slew of new young hungry lyrical emcees who took their influence and added to it imo. That is one of the reasons I think they did not make so much noise in the 90's, the comp was 3-4x heavier than what they dealt with in the 80's.

Umm Kev...KRS-One released two albums that were considered classic by many in the 90's

The Return Of The Boom Bap-(1993)

KRS-One-(1995)

and some including myself consider Sex And Violence-(1992) classic as well..so Kris was doing okay in the early to mid 90's

As for Rakim he took a break from recording but when he returned in 1997...The 18th Letter-(1997) was in rotation a pretty regular basis man...The Master-(1999) get a heavy dose of respect from most hip-hop heads as well..and he still had the early 90's on lock with Let The Rhythm Hit 'Em-(1990) and Don't Sweat The Technique-(1992)

In terms of music quality Kane is the main one that comes to mind who took a little bit of a nosedive in the 90's but some heads respect Taste Of Chocolate-(1990)...Prince Of Darkness-(1991) and Looks Like A Job For-(1993)..I think Kane's problem was he was fuckin Madonna and wanted to be a sex symbol more than an emcee at that point but lyrically he could've hung with anyone out in the 90's IN MY OPINION man...so I've gotta disagree completely with your theory on things but it's all good man!

Kev, the reason why skilled rappers rhyme the way they do is because of Rakim. Dude changed the way rhymes were put together. That is what makes him a lyrical genius. Just check 98% of the albums that came out before his debut and then listen to any rap album after him. He changed things. Even KRS One had to step his shit up. Hell, the media was calling Nas the next Rakim when he came out because that was like the highest form of praise for a rapper back when skills mattered. A lot of people have built upon what he has done, but none of them have changed things on such a grand scale. Without Rakim, your favorite rappers would sound like The Rapper Jalil...assuming they already don't, of course. lol

"The way that Rakim put words together is like no other." - Brad Jordan (Allhiphop.com interview)

Also, I agree with Trotter in the sense that a lot people would love Megalon if major labels and publications told them to. Why? Because they're doing what major labels tell them to right now...and always have. Say it ain't so...

You also had Chuck D and Kool G Rap back then as well. Those two definitely stood out lyrically.

With the exception of maybe Kane, all of the guys above made noise in the 90's. While their later albums weren't as commercially successful as their earlier LP's, they were still very critcially acclaimed and a number of classics were released by them.

I think that some heads on this forum need to get aquainted with a few emcees/pioneers and producers....real talk...I don't always co-sign everything that wiki prints but this is a good start for some of the younger heads to get a little bit better of a picture about this beautiful artform called hip-hop...maybe it will clear up some misinformation about some of their histories or just stuff you've heard about them over the years!
