Biggie Smalls--The most overrated entertainer ever.

I never thought ReadyToDie was a classic. The beats were A material but Biggie came up short lyrically. As far as LifeAfterDeath,well, I know Biggie fans that were underwhelmed by that album and thought it was way too poppy. I didn't like LAD at all. Biggie for some reason or another got all this acclaim straight out the gate. He just had the Puff Daddy train of momentum behind him and became the center piece of a corperate label. Tupac was by far a superior artist. Even though he resorted to the same antics of Biggie...Pac was a true poet. Pac said stuff that really got at a bunny's soul. He didn't start out with a bang, cause he was waaay to militant. He sparked a lot of controversy as Biggie did not. BIG albums were garnered strictly for maximum profit. Pop single after pop single. Their was nothing rebellious or innovative about his music. If anything his music was a prelude to the death of hip hop.

Biggie was actually donned GOAT by Source Magazine. And both his albums got 5 mics. All those rappers aphilliated with Biggie , LilKim,Lil Ceasar,P.Diddy, Mase, are straight garbage. Biggie Smalls legacy is not even greater than Megalon's in my opinion. And to think they made a movie of him. Its great they told his story but there are other stories that need to be told. Like the story of Kool Herc, the godfather of hip hop. This guy is actually a immigrant from Jamaica, who for a stint was addicted to crack real bad, but shook that bad habit. But yet fuckin' Emenem got a movie. And Tupac never got the movie he deserved. There was one low-budget that was suppose to be about Tupac.

And people wondered why Biggie didn't have much recorded material when he died. Thats cause Puff controlled everything he did.

Not really. Tommy Gunn would destroy Biggie in a battle if he was still alive. Tommy is multi-faceted. No rapper is realer. It cause of jail time that stagnated his career. Tommy doesn't have a major label backing him. If Biggie never linked up with P,Diddy you wouldn't know who he was. Tommy never dropped any silly pop-bopper single like OneMoreChance, that song is trash. Tommy only drops raw shit. If you ever heard the song OneInAMillion, you'd know BIG couldn't even come close to it.

Life After Death was an excellent album. I could honestly play it from front to back without skipping any tracks. Easily the best hip-hop double album of all time IMO.

i prefer Wu Forever, All Eyez on Me, and the Art of War over LAD, RTD is classic though

I won't deny that the bad boy machine is a factor in Big's success and global props but Big is a legend mainly because of his flow, voice, delivery, and lyrics. If Big was just major because of some "pop bopper singles" he would not be as praised or idolized as he is. He would be Hammer or Fresh Prince.

Your taste is run of the norm. I know your favorite rappers better than you do. I know that hard rock east coast shit better than you.

Rakim was a lyrical genius, hence the reason why he's the most quoted MC of all time.

Rakim was AHEAD of his time. I know you're not a fan of his but dude is a BEAST on the mic. Even to this day, I don't see many cats fuckin with the lines he dropped on his first four albums, and even his 5th one for that matter. His music is timeless.

I agree that Rakim was ahead of his time and that is where my theory lies and unfolds. He stood out amongst the talent level of the 80's where you only had Big Daddy Kane and KRS One really making innovative moves lyrically in the 80's. I know there were plenty of other lyrical rappers that started in the 80's but none stood out soley for their lyrics like these 3. In the 90's they meet a slew of new young hungry lyrical emcees who took their influence and added to it imo. That is one of the reasons I think they did not make so much noise in the 90's, the comp was 3-4x heavier than what they dealt with in the 80's.

Umm Kev...KRS-One released two albums that were considered classic by many in the 90's

The Return Of The Boom Bap-(1993)

KRS-One-(1995)

and some including myself consider Sex And Violence-(1992) classic as well..so Kris was doing okay in the early to mid 90's

As for Rakim he took a break from recording but when he returned in 1997...The 18th Letter-(1997) was in rotation a pretty regular basis man...The Master-(1999) get a heavy dose of respect from most hip-hop heads as well..and he still had the early 90's on lock with Let The Rhythm Hit 'Em-(1990) and Don't Sweat The Technique-(1992)

In terms of music quality Kane is the main one that comes to mind who took a little bit of a nosedive in the 90's but some heads respect Taste Of Chocolate-(1990)...Prince Of Darkness-(1991) and Looks Like A Job For-(1993)..I think Kane's problem was he was fuckin Madonna and wanted to be a sex symbol more than an emcee at that point but lyrically he could've hung with anyone out in the 90's IN MY OPINION man...so I've gotta disagree completely with your theory on things but it's all good man!

Kev, the reason why skilled rappers rhyme the way they do is because of Rakim. Dude changed the way rhymes were put together. That is what makes him a lyrical genius. Just check 98% of the albums that came out before his debut and then listen to any rap album after him. He changed things. Even KRS One had to step his shit up. Hell, the media was calling Nas the next Rakim when he came out because that was like the highest form of praise for a rapper back when skills mattered. A lot of people have built upon what he has done, but none of them have changed things on such a grand scale. Without Rakim, your favorite rappers would sound like The Rapper Jalil...assuming they already don't, of course. lol

Also, I agree with Trotter in the sense that a lot people would love Megalon if major labels and publications told them to. Why? Because they're doing what major labels tell them to right now...and always have. Say it ain't so...

You also had Chuck D and Kool G Rap back then as well. Those two definitely stood out lyrically.

With the exception of maybe Kane, all of the guys above made noise in the 90's. While their later albums weren't as commercially successful as their earlier LP's, they were still very critcially acclaimed and a number of classics were released by them.
