I should be slapped for being from Minneapolis and not owning a single album by Morris Day & The Time. And suggestions on where to start?

Morris is on this track which is good, I'd say start with the one with Get It Up on it.

Right on. Smooth cut man...
The cut with "Get It Up" is on their 1981 debut. I think I'm obviously choosing between that one and their sophomore album "What Time Is It?" (both are rated highly by critics). Honestly, even being from Minneapolis, I don't know anyone who really listens to The Time. I know it was basically a Prince side project, but I still don't hear about the albums much.
lol...classic shit

Anybody who appreciates funk respects The Time, but I've never given a full listen to any of their projects. Morris is a pimp, Kevin Smith knows what's up, have you seen The Adventures Of Ford Fairlane?, Morris is in that.

I have all of their albums...and they're all good, so there's no bad place to start. I'm shocked soemone from MN is just getting up on them, though...
The Time Ice Cream Castles What Time Is It? Pandemonium!
Go in that order...

I have not seen the movie. I know they're well-respected though...I guess you can say I don't have any friends who are really big funk fans.

That's an easy answer. I got into funk/R&B/soul (and even jazz) by way of hip-hop. So I never properly went through the motions of the genre (of Funk) starting out. I mean, I wasn't even a Prince fan up until a few years ago. All I know is that I need more funk...I don't have enough. lol
I have some funk records, but I guess I'm interested in the slightly more obscure one's like The Time. Any recs you can think of since I got your attention?
Thanks again. I just ordered "The Time".

Johnny Watson Ohio Players Con Funk Shun Don Julian & The Larks
Those are a few of my favorites that aren't P-Funk or Bootsy's Rubberband.

Well, I've just been reading up on them, and decided to check out "Pain" & "Pleasure" first. I want to hear their earlier harder edge funk first. A DL for now because I need that instant gratification (lol), but I'll be making some purchases shortly I'm sure.

Pleasure is great. Just got done listening to the whole thing. Funky Worm is great....not sure if it's my favorite though. I liked a lot of that jazzy shit too. They meld styles together nicely.

Funk is a specialty of mine. Here are a few names to check out...
Slave SOS Band Anything Parliament/Funkadelic related...(though, technically, Funkadelic was more psychedelic rock than anything else at first) Ohio Players Commodores Brick Earth, Wind & Fire The Meters Gap Band B.T. Express Heatwave
Just some random names off the dome. Some obvious, some not...
Co-Sign Guitar Watson too.

Damn, information overload...lol
I never even heard of Slave...and they got like 15 albums....lol. I want to check some of that out, got any ideas for a good starting point?
I take it SOS Band's best is their debut? From the reviews I'm reading, that sounds like it may be the case.
Freakin' Ohio Players though....that shit is great. What's your favorite by them? The 3 albums by them I listened to were all great, but I liked "Fire" the best....I think. lol

Alright man, I've listened to a bunch of these cuts. All tight as hell! I went out looking for Slave's debut album. Apparently it's out of print and mad expensive. So I downloaded it for a listen and have bumped it a couple times now - excellent material!
I'll be using this thread as sort of a "master template" for my future funk purchases. I basically know nothing except for what you guys are laying down here....aside from a few acts.
Question: Funk vs. Disco?
I know there is a clear difference. But I don't really know how to articulate it. It goes like this - my mom and dad (middle aged white people born on rock 'n' roll) have never heard of a genre known as "funk". They're like, "you mean disco?". Is it just a white person thing? lol...I mean, I always stress the fact that the are different, but they don't get it. I think they are under the impression it's all dance/pop Bee Gee's sounding shit. lol...anyway, random thought I know...but I thought I'd bring it up...

Yeah BITD a lot of whites thought anything black and non-Motown was disco; they couldn't tell the differences between Atlantic Starr, Parliament/Funkadelic, Unlimited Touch, Willie Hutch and Crown Heights Affair (that would be R&B, funk, disco-funk, soul and straight disco respectively) and STILL can't tell......

Nah, not at all. Like I said, I don't know much of anything about funk. Just learning really. I have a feeling I'll be going on a funk bender for a while here. lol
I have The Time's debut coming in the mail.
