| Lisence To Ill is dope, but I think they play more to the alternative crowd, especially after "Paul's Boutique". They've obviously done a lot as far as getting mainstream crowds into rap AND actually they've helped push the genre forward with the aforementioned album...but they're just not "hip hop" enough for me. Neither. |

| top 100 to me. Licesned To Ill is a top 10 album to me. The rest of their discography is good, but they don't get nearly the spins as their debut. | |

| Personally, the Beasties are Top 50 to me but I'll say Top 100 to give them a better chance of getting on. |

| Due, their nasally, annoying ass rhymes may appeal to some, but not this listener. They don't even make a top 10 of white rappers, let alone rappers in general. |

Those 8 AT LEAST objectively are better, so at best they are #9 for whities alone. |

Those 8 AT LEAST objectively are better, so at best they are #9 for whities alone. That's your opinion and you're entitled to it. One thing that is fact though, is that NONE of those artists with the possible exception of Em have the legendary discography that the Beasties have. |

| Legendary to old magazines who were on a white novelty acts nuts - and we're not talking disco at this point, we're talking skill as a rapper, and I am being very generous in putting beasties at 9 after those dudes. |

| LEGENDS
every white emcee better thank this group for paving the way
also Licensed To Ill is a bonafide classic as well as Paul's Boutique
I know that Pounds will have this group in his top five and he is not alone in that sentiment
they paved the way for the white emcee to even consider doing this artform and in the process released some classics and impacted and influenced the music as well
I never really looked at these guys as lyricists per se' but they get top 100 based more on impact and influence on the culture
top 100 IMO | |

Say what you will about their "skill" but if it weren't for them, NONE of those white rappers INCLUDING Eminem wouldn't be in the game today. |

| One, debatable. That's like saying if Jackie never played baseball no black dude ever would, a RIDICULOUS statement.
Second, I judge artists on personal preference and actual rap skill. not all this other garbage some of you are using to justify your own lame picks. |

| Oh, and it's a top 100 for me. I dig them, I like a lot of their albums, but not too many of the latter albums had the 100% pure hip hop feel to them. It's more like a collage of all the genres that influence them. They don't get top 50 from me, but what I own from them is pretty damn good.
and, yes, they were a novelty act when they first dropped. Good thing Rick Rubin had their back. Folks that were listening to hip hop when they debuted know that Beasties got shitted on when they dropped...they were being called everything under the sun for being wack, but most notably they were dismissed as melanin deficient Run DMC ripoffs. Licensed To Ill falls further and further down any list of mine as the years go by. Paul's Boutique is the album that commanded respect (and is still dope to this day). Their debut is just a gag perpetrated by a rock group that took a shot at cutting a rap record (their words, not mine). | |

Nice. Someone finally said it... The Beasties aren't for everyone, but I like their stuff. They're not the greatest lyricists but their lyrics are clever and entertaining, and their production has always been top notch. Licensed To Ill and Paul's Boutique are classics, and Check Your Head and Hello Nasty are near classics IMO. As for the Jackie Robinson comment made by Steve, blacks would have gotten in eventually if Jackie never played, but it wouldn't have happened until after the MLK speech where Civil Rights became universal. Hence, it wouldn't have been as much of a landmark achievement. That persons number certainly wouldn't have been retired throughout the sport like Jackie's was. My point is, the Beastie Boys made it possible for whites to be ACCEPTED as rap artists, so every white artist that has come out since owes them props. |
