Oh shit. That's really fucked up. Razah has really developed into my favorite Sunz Of Man memeber even over Killah Priest. I hope he makes a quick and full recovery

Shit, never been on the dude's music, but hopefully he'll be ok. Had the same shit happened to one of my best friends and the whole situation was a shit-storm. Hopefully he'll be ok post-surgery.

I know I'm not going to make any friends with this, but it's how I think. There's been too much of this lately.

You don't know these people. There are people in your community or family that could benefit from the compassion (or pseudocompassion) that you are giving these artists. And, it's safe to assume that these folks have ample social constructs to provide for them.

Basically, who gives a fuck? Nobody dies nice.

I get what you're saying dude, I never post in those thread either, but when its something you can relate to, you definitely feel sympathy for whoever it's effecting.

I see his point as well, but that's pretty much what it boils down to for me the handful of times I post in these types of threads.

The way I see it, it takes all of 5 seconds to post condolences or well wishes.

By some people - hip-hop or even this forum falls into the category of one of their "communities." - so the effort put into this is put into their community.

Obviously it takes a significantly less amount of time and effort to post here than to visit a hospital or volunteer, etc. etc. etc.

The amazing to me is that posting on a forum does not preclude you from doing both.

So:

1. It's rather obnoxious to imply somehow people don't extend this type of compassion to their own community and family.

2. Your post was the longest posted up to that point, so you put more effort into the whole thing than others did.

3. Isn't your energy better used trying to cure an ACTUAL societal problem out there in your "community?" So aren't your efforts just as pointless as anything else in this thread?

4. For some people here, this man who IS in a coma, does make music that they can relate to and touches them on a personal level, maybe deeper than their relative 5 times removed or the person down the street who is sick, so why would they neglect this situation and concern themselves with the other?

The melodrama's just a bit silly to me. It's all just lip service, for what? Because we all know our turn is coming, and we hope it might concern as many people as possible?

"Hell Razah" might be a complete fucking asshole for all we know.

As for the length of my post, that's what it took to get my thoughts across.

Again, not knowing him, how sincere can the sympathy really be? Melodramatic lip service.

Well, it really comes down to how much of a personal connection people have with the artist and/or what they represent.

Sure, it's not likely everyone who posts has a personal connection, but some people do. Whether the artists' personality matches their persona is irrelevant in that context since all those people know is the music and the music touched them so they have an emotional connection with the persona.

Culturally, we are just bred to do this sort of thing. It's equally melodramatic to express my condolences to a perfect stranger or someone I don't really know that well when they inform me of a personal tragedy. In the grand scheme of things I can't be sincerely sympathetic there, but society has bred us to empathize and express that emotion or else be considered cold.

Finally, these tragedies have a symbolic value to them not everyone understands. You, obviously, don't care or don't understand what someone like Michael Jackson meant to many people. For many people he symbolized a lot of things, especially within the Black community. For those of us raised in a culture of death and cyclical poverty, the death of a celebrity who came from a similar background, no matter how big or small, symbolizes the idea that you can't escape that cycle no matter what and can have a deeper effect than the average person.

Basically, I understand what your saying, but if we take cynicism to an extreme - everything we do is pointless, selfish, and worthless.

Well put.

I wasn't expecting to change anything. This is what goes through my head when I see these threads. Usually I keep to myself, but I just thought i'd throw it out there.

Incidentally, this is not the same sentiment I expressed toward the MJ situation. No need to get back into that, though.

Well, unless an accident takes you, your end probably will resemble this. I don't know you. I mean, the core posters I've been associating with for years might hit home. But guess what? It is going to happen. Don't be surprised. Because, no, I won't be.
