PostSubject: Tha Movie Thread   Tue 29 Jun 2010, 10:34 am

It' summer and I don't have HBO...so there is nothing at all on TV. I was watching the World Cup for a while, but now that the US is gone I might just only watch the championship match. Anyway, I recently got Netflix and I've been taking advantage of it, watching all kinds of movies. Basically, the idea behind this thread is to talk about movies new and old and give each other recommendations, etc. Also, feel free to talk about movies coming out soon that you are hyped about or that you think will suck.

Next five movies in my queue: Cure, Army of Shadows, The Killer, The Wind That Shakes The Barley, Hidden Fortress.

Movies coming out this summer that I'm excited about: Inception

What genres are you interested in?

As far as the summer: definitely 'Predators', 'Inception', I cant fuckin stand A.Jolie movies(as of lately, Gia's a classic lol), however, Im interested in seeing 'Salt'....

Pretty much anything except for romantic comedies/chick flicks. Also, I probably watch just as many foreign films as I do American films.

Predators does look interesting, and it will definitely be better than the AVP movies. I've only seen a short trailer for Salt, so I don't know a lot about it, but I'll look into it.

The second one was easily one of the top 5 worst movies I've ever seen.

I've seen both of those, nice picks man. Memento is my favorite Chris Nolan film. I'd say it's top 5 of the last decade, actually. As for Shutter Island, it was good but not great. I went to it knowing I would hate the ending, but Leonardo DiCaprio's last line changed everything.

Sound cool, I'll see if I can get them on Netflix.

Anyone gonna see Inception tomorrow?

Also, I saw Predators last week, solid entertainment.

I'm probably gonna see Inception tommorrow. I hope it's better than Shutter Island, which was decent but a tad disappointing by Scorsese standards.

Toy Story 3 is my flick of the year thus far.

If you don't mind an obviously weak plot, then Inception was great.

Are you a fan of Nolan's less popular movies (Memento, Following, The Prestige)?

Momento was cool, haven't seen the others. And, I think everyone is taking what I said the wrong way. Inception was great, and I don't regret seeing it at all, but the plot was weak. Everything else made up for it, though.

Yes, good one, SRP. I forgot that the trooffff qualifies as a funny joke these days...

It's not even that (even though I didn't like the ending). Just the overall plot was not very good, IMO. But, that's the thing, it had a terrible plot, but they still made it into a great movie.

Shaun lacks taste when it comes to films.

On a side note, Mr. Nobody is the best movie I've ever seen. I stayed up until 4 am this morning to stream it twice in a row on my laptop, I may do that again tonight.

It's not been released on dvd in the US to my knowledge. I watched it on greenmovie last night/this morning. The closest thing to compare it to is Slaughterhouse 5 or maybe Vanilla Sky (story-telling wise, anyway, it's not linear at all...well...kind-of...hard to explain, but you really have to pay attention and not be Shaun about shit).

I love that book, but I never saw the movie. I also have not seen Vanilla Sky. But yeah, Vonnegut was nice with the novels.

Vanilla Sky sucks, too

Shaun, you're a cool kid. I think you're a nice guy. I respect your opinions on hip hop. Really. So don't take this the wrong way, but your opinions on movies remind me of my sister in law. If a movie has an ending you don't like, the whole movie sucks. If the movie uses logic and bases it's final twist at some point earlier in the movie, you dub it predictable (easy to do once you see the end, by the way). If a seemingles complicated plots oversimplifies itself so most people can enjoy it, the plot "sucks". I completely disagree with these lines of thought. Just saying.

If you haven't seen it, I won't try to explain it. It's definitely a "choose your own interpretation" type of film.

With all due respect, that's how it comes across when you plainly complain about plot in a film like "Inception" and then praise some other movies you have. "Plot" is often used interchangably with "story" but, really, they are two completely different things. Maybe that's where the disconnect is, but it still doesn't make sense on some of your ratings.

Then again, he thought Memento was ill. A challenging plot structure if I ever saw one.

Mr. Nobody is even more dense than that, fair warning. And, IMO, "Memento" is the Illmatic of american film.

Nice man, it really is that ill.

But now that you say Mr. Nobody is more dense, I'm kind of interested in some more comparisons. You ever watch any David Lynch movies - the later ones like Mulholland Dr. and Inland Empire? Is it that kind of dense?

No, only because this movie actually makes sense in a direct context. Lynch's films are always subversion over context and style over sense IMO. Any point he makes is only made amidst a bunch of misdirection posing as subtle nuance.
