I respect their status as vets, but they're not the Southern RUN-DMC.

I guess I'll vote for 3-6 Mafia, I have liked a few of their songs. 2 Live Crew are completely one-dimensional.

That is how I feel about Run DMC, they are one dimensional to me, same sound, style, etc. But I respect their status as vets and legends. Just like 2 Live are legends for standing up for the first amendment rights of rappers, they probably had a greater impact on the game with that than Run DMC ever did.

The only reason 2 Live Crew did that was because they got wrongfully arrested for their lyrics and people were trying to ban them. Otherwise, all they ever rapped about was sex.

Run-DMC was not one dimensional. They rapped about a variety of different topics. And as far as impact on the game is concerned....please!!! Run-DMC is the reason why we have this forum and why the game had Golden Ages to begin with, and I'm not trying to hear that argument "Oh well someone else would have did it if Run-DMC didn't" because we don't know that for sure. Up until Raising Hell, rap only had a cult following and wasn't getting a whole lot of airplay other than on urban radio stations on Friday and Saturday nights. Ask any MC or group who's been around the last 20 years and they'll tell you how important and influential they were. Not being a Run-DMC fan is one thing, but you can't honestly downplay or diminish their impact on the game.

I am a Run DMC fan, but a stan, which is why I don't overblow their impact on the game. Someone else would have done it if not for Run DMC, I appreciate them, but it is what it is.
2 Live fought for rap albums not being banned in stores or unfairly treated, they fought so you could go to a store and pick up a CD on store shelves. That is infinitely more important IMO. They also fought for the right to sample and do parodies of songs, they have a supreme court case on the matter.

They could have easily said forget it, but they didn't. Luke fought for freedom of speech and the right for rappers to speak their mind without being censored by the government. That has had a much bigger impact on the game. Its not about being a fan of either group, but recognizing the real.

How is that more important than being the group responsible for the entire rap genre becoming mainstream to begin with? And we don't know if someone else would have done it. Maybe, but it's not 100% certain. Some people say that Run-DMC "sold out" by making Walk This Way with Aerosmith and I feel that's an ignorant statement. It was THAT SONG that made non-minorities say to themselves "These guys are really good, I'm gonna buy their album". It was at that moment that rap got more exposure and it was getting more radio and video play nationwide.

I commend 2 Live Crew for what they did, but the only reason they did that was because they themselves were banned and then people started targeting rap as a whole. They easily won that case because the first amendment cannot be broken, and they won the parody case because their lawyer brought up the Rick Dees case which made it legal to parody tracks. Sure, they could have said forget it but they loved what they did so they stood up for their rights. I definitely respect and commend them for that, but they still didn't have a bigger impact on the game than Run-DMC. Run-DMC laid the blueprint.

It all comes down to what you value more KJ.

You seem to value the fact rap went pop, that's your choice.

I value the fact rappers are free to rap about what they want without fear of government censorship. Sure, Nas had censorship from Def Jam and changed his album title, but most other rappers don't have those worries. With most of the good rap coming out nowadays is underground or independent, free speech is much more valuable than MTV is.

Okay this argument is starting to sound a little bit crazy and I'm talking from your point of view Pedro...what you're saying sounds kinda crazy man....comparing Run-D.M.C.'s influence to the 2 Live Crew's because they had a censorship court case sounds completely NUTS man....

that court case was a big deal in terms of censorship in hip-hop but Run-D.M.C.'s impact is one of the reasons why the 2 Live Crew was even in the game to begin with...Luke has stated this before as has Ice-T, Ice Cube, Dr.Dre, Big Daddy Kane, Marley Marl, Heavy D and The Boyz, Scarface, Jay-Z and many many others....Run-D.M.C. is the reason why you're even discussing hip-hop music this intently right now....this is a FACT, and to downgrade what they mean to the game and say "well if they didn't do it then somebody else would have" sounds crazy man.......the were many opportunities for "others" to do it as you said, and it didn't happen so that's all spectulation....contrary to what you might believe hip-hop actually did exist before Run-D.M.C. came out...there were quite a few heads participating and doing the game who were inspired by The Sugarhill Gang or Flash or Bambaataa or The Funky Four Plus One More or The Treacherous Three and many others but it was Run-D.M.C. who would go on to inspire the entire nation and really the world to know and be interested in hip-hop music and culture.....the others were inspiring heads on a more local level...you need to go do some hip-hop homework Pedro...real talk my dude!

There's no homework to be done. Run DMC just lucked out and happened to be the first ones with a hit. Russell and Rick would have found someone else to do it if Run DMC had not worked out. They played their part well, but they get only so much credit for being in the right place at the right time.

I don't need to do homework powell. I have full faith in the fact hip-hop would have been worldwide had Run DMC not sold out and done the rock song. It's that simple.

It ain't about what I value more, it's about what's real.

It's a fact that if it wasn't for Run-DMC, they'd be no 2 Live Crew, or any of these groups for that matter.

They didn't "luck out" they were talented and intelligent. And it was Aerosmith's idea for Run, D, and Jay to be on Walk This Way. That speaks volumes. They actually weren't down with the idea at first, but even to this day Reverend Run says that it was the smartest business decision he's ever made.

As Powell mentioned, others had tried to blow up hip-hop before RUN-DMC did but couldn't do it. We will never know for sure whether or not rap would have blown up if it weren't for them.

Everyone involved in hip-hop knows that Run-DMC made the game what it has become including Luther Campell. No matter how you feel about their music personally, their influence and importance can't be denied.

So it was Aerosmith's idea, so they should get the credit for it. Aerosmith could have done the same for anyone else had they chosen them instead.

You can call your opinion a fact all you want, but it is your opinion that Luke would not have come along had it not been for Run DMC. My opinion is that he would have, someone else would have blown up, and we'd be looking at a similar game.

The funny thing though is that now RUN-DMC is more well known for that song than Aerosmith is, despite the fact that Steven Tyler created it.

And what I said is FACT because Luke has said himself that they'd be no rap game without Run-DMC, as have MANY other artists. But you can believe what you want, I know the real deal, as do most others.

Yeah, I was talking to KJ.

I have no doubt RUN DMC inspired almost everyone who came after them, and their success had a big impact in the game, I just value what 2 Live Crew did more is all that it comes down to.

To play devil's advocate for a second... SRP has a point with this. If Run-DMC had not transitioned hip hop to the mainstream and all that, this would still be important. Even if there was not much national coverage, you would still be able to buy a CD.

Find me a quote where luke says "there would be no rap game without run dmc" and then I will respond to that BS.

I didn't say that Luke said there would be no rap game without Run-D.M.C., I said that Luke said that he was inspired to start his career because of Run-D.M.C.! you must mean something that KJ said??

Yeah, I was talking to KJ.

I have no doubt RUN DMC inspired almost everyone who came after them, and their success had a big impact in the game, I just value what 2 Live Crew did more is all that it comes down to.

I heard Luke say that in a BET interview after JMJ died, he wasn't the only one that said it either.

Your memory is not a reliable source, find the video or an article quoting it or stop making things up.

I ain't makin up shit, I have no reason to lie. If the video was available I'd post it, but honestly your opinion means nothing to me, so I could care less whether or not you believe me.

All I know is that Run-DMC is infinitely more important than 2 Live Crew. While I commend 2LC for standing up for free speech, all they ever rapped about was sex, and after the case was settled all they did was go back to rapping about sex. They had no depth.

You have plenty of reason to lie KJ. That's all you do, you make up shit and then back off when you can't confirm it. You pull imaginary quotes out your ass like they were dildos.

If you don't care because my opinion means nothing then you should stop responding, you wouldn't respond if you didn't care. You can dismiss 2 Live all you want, and you can maintain your OPINION that RUN DMC is more important. My opinion is different.

Everything you just said (just like most of the things that come out of your mouth) is BULLSHIT. But what the fuck else is new.
