I need feedback

Ok, I'm considering doing a hip hop movie tourney after Kev finishes his tourney. As of now, i'm considering separating comedies and action/drama into two different tourneys, and doing a field of 32 for both. Is this something people would be interested in? There are certain movies that obviously belong in the tourneys like Menace II Society, Boyz N The Hood, Friday, House Party, etc........... Please offer thoughts and opinions on which ones belong that are not so obvious.

I think movies like Scarface and Carlito's Way certainly belong... even if they just have a huge influence on the culture. Training Day is another one who's soundtrack/subject matter would put it in the running.

Good idea man. Yeah Scarface, Good Fellas, and all of those belong. What about movies/doc's like Rhyme & Reason and The Show?

I'd be ok with that because The Show deserves to be included somewhere, but what tourney should i put them in? Should i put them in with the comedy tourney?

I agree that Scarface and similar movies are essential to hip hop, but that could be a slippery slope to include movies like that cause then we would need to include The Godfather movies and such. If the people want to include them, i'm cool with it.

I don't think movies like Scarface and such should be included because ANY movie can influence a hip hop artist. You would have to include movies like Coming To America and other movies like it. You would also have to throw in all the Wu-Tang karate flicks. I think it should be limited to movies that are either directly about hip hop or at least about the hood and the environments that surround hip hop. This is a good idea, though.

The influence of coming to america and other lesser movies can't compare to something like scarface.... at the minimum you have to include scarface - def jam even did a anniversary soundtrack for it so you know the movie is hip-hop.

Yeah not all mafia movies need to be included on 2nd thought. But Scarface and Goodfellas have to be imo.

I also cosign the Beef series. And make sure Dirty States Of America gets included.

Either way, when you get ready to do it, list the movies you plan on putting in and then I'll add and/or subtract.

If i'm going to include all genres i'll try to do 64 entries. So people are cool with including Scarface and Goodfellas and omitting The Godfather? What about a movie like Bad Boys?

I don't think you can omit the Godfather given all of the references rap artists have made to it (i.e. I'm The Don).

I'm not sure if Bad Boys is necessarily hip hop. I wouldn't have a problem with it being in the tourney but it probably wouldn't even be considered if Will Smith weren't in it.

Do The Right Thing is essential though.

If the prereq is just hip hop in the soundtracks add these T.

Colors & Gladiator (Cuba in South Chi not Crowe in Rome).

Colors is a dope pick, but I think Godfather is more hip hop than Goodfellas, personally.

Please don't exclude Gang Related, it's the only thing John Belushi's half aborted fetus of a brother is tolerable in.
