Damn, Phonte seems to be the most hated MC on this forum. Makes absolutely no sense, dude is nice.
I'm going with Phonte too, I spin The Minstrel Show the most between these two. I'd have no problem with Ace winning though.

And, nobody's hating on Phonte. The dude is mediocre, plain & simple...just good enough to get away with having a hip-hop career. Give him love because he flows like your remedial heroes did 25 years ago...

Ah, that describes Ace also.
And it just comes down to preference as usual. Speaking for my self I would rather hear Phonte than Ace even though their styles are not that far apart. But I am well aware that in the grand scheme of things, Ace has waaaay more weight in this rap shit than Phonte. Ace is a pioneer and has a more solid legacy. Phonte just has more charisma and I dig his rhymes more.

Saying that Slaine is better than Rakim makes zero sense whatsoever, which is a comment that you made. A false one at that. Slaine will never come within sniffing distance of the accolades that Rakim has been bestowed with. Dude is a legend, Slaine's not even a blip on the radar screen and isn't likely to ever be more than that even if he went mainstream.
Phonte is dope to these ears. I'm a Masta Ace fan but I find myself bumpin Phonte more these days. A lot of MC's you big up on this site are about as entertaining as watching paint dry.
Those so called "remedial heroes" you mention are still being shown love and given props 25 years later. They're on a ton of people's GOAT lists for a reason. Your favorites would kill for that type of glory, so GTFOH with that bullshit.

The reason today's greatest will never be given the 'accolades' that the pioneers were is simple...the bar has been raised. Emceeing across the board has become more technical, and emcees across the board have grown with the art.
You've listened to Slaine & Rakim back to back...if you can't hear that Slaine is putting out more complex rhymes you're either a liar or an idiot.
Ace has been able to maintain an entertaining prescence throughout hip-hop's history...not many can say that, especially without radio tracks.

All that mumbo jumbo you're talking about is bullshit. Today's greatest don't get the accolades because they're simply not as good. People aren't checking for them like that. There are a few exceptions but overall the rap scene isn't as good as it was in the 80's and 90's. If you came up in my era you would agree with that as the vast majority of people that did come up the same time I did feel the same way.
Rakim is a far more appealing MC than Slaine, period. Not only is Rakim a great lyricist but he spits rhymes that make people hit the rewind button. Slaine doesn't have the replay value of Rakim, period. There's more to hip-hop than complex rhyme schemes. Slaine's stuff either solo or group wise will never be as memorable as anything Rakim did on his first four albums, and if you believe otherwise you're the idiot.
As for Masta Ace, I agree with what you said about him. I'm a fan of his and always have been, it's just that I reach for Phonte more. If that makes guys like you and Slang mad then I don't give a fuck. Phonte is dope to these ears.

Don't act like you've given Slaine a fair listen. That bullshit stops here, don't even say it again...
The whole of hip-hop is different. Slaine's music appeals to a fraction of listeners today because there is more choice in subgenres, more personalized sounds for the listeners. Everybody liked Rakim when there was one hip-hop...that's why them dudes were recognised universally...not because they were better than today's emcees. They just aren't, and I already stated why you might think otherwise.

I have given Slaine a fair listen. He's not a wack MC but I feel that you seriously overrate him.
And your opinions are simply that, OPINIONS. don't fool yourself into thinking that what you're saying are facts. As I stated before, there's more to hip-hop than complex rhyme schemes. You've got to spit lines that people care about. Rakim has been able to do that his entire career. Rakim is one of the GOAT's for a reason. He's a multi-dimensional MC that appeals to the masses, both diehard listeners and casual ones.
And you say the word "were" as if they're no longer recognized, that's BULLSHIT. People will remember guys like Rakim, Nas, and KRS-One forever. Those guys have numerous classics under their belt. People don't even know who the fuck Slaine is now, he'll be even more forgettable in the future, and you compare him to legends? Please!! That's just laughable.

umm Romped is hip-hop today in better shape then it was before in your honest opinion??
better yet how long have you been listening to hip-hop music?? after you answer that then answer the other question
saying that heads liked Rakim because he was one of only a few emcees sounds stupid man...because many of the emcees back then would wipe the floor with the trashbags out today IN MY OPINION.....but maybe you think hip-hop in 2011 is in the best shape of it's life because there are many more options, and the game has "evolved" and gotten more "complex"...........I'm not seeing that at all

have you fallen recently?? and if so have you seen a doctor yet??
Rakim made an album last year man....The Seventh Seal, I actually wasn't that fond of it....I gave it 3.5 stars, I thought there was too much singing on it for a Rakim album, it wasn't horrible by any means but it wasn't great either.....

Yes, there are more people making great music in all different cities all over the world, not just the south Bronx.
No, so no.

umm Romped hip-hop music and culture expanded outside the boundaries of the South Bronx back in the early 80's so I'm not sure what you mean by that comment...I think you were attempting some humor maybe??

And the new stuff isn't up to par IN MY OPINION and I guess that's where our fundamental differences lie.....if you have been listening to hip-hop since 1987 (and are 32 years old) and think that 2011 is showing some strong moves and classic moments in hip-hop music and culture well then your standards for hip-hop are just different from mine and that's all good too....

I agree with that statement, but that's NOT what he said. He co-signed Parker whom I completely disagree with.
The way Parker made it sound is like Rakim is no longer relevant or nobody cares about his music anymore and that's BULLSHIT. He also said that today's hip-hop is better than the old school, and that's more BULLSHIT. I'm not saying that today's hip hop is wack, but the crop of MC's out today isn't as good as it used to be.
If you ask most people who the dopest MC's of all time are, their list will come closer to mine and Powell's than it would to Parker's or Romped's.

Hey KJ, B.Shaw and Parker, Myestro and whomever else is on here have the right to like whatever it is that they want to like man, I really don't care if most heads lists come closer to mine or theirs or yours, what I'm disputing is Parker's dumb ass statements about how Rakim and the others from the "old school" were liked mainly because they were the only ones available which simply implies that if more heads were doing hip-hop back then like the 100,000 motherfuckers who are doing it now then the game would have been better back then, which has got to be one of the dumbest statements from a supposed hip-hop head I have ever heard.....because most hip-hop heads know and understand that hip-hop is at it's weakest point right now.....so all of the additional heads haven't really improved upon the quality of the music, Parker also likes to think that the words used in 1988 are much different from the words used in 2011 but if he were to check a dictionary from '88 and one printed in 2011 he would see that the words are the same and those same words were being spit in '88 that are being spit today, the game has only "evolved" in terms of the amount of emcees in it....the rhyme schemes from let's say '88 are up to par with the rhyme scheme's of today.....R.A. and Slaine for example have not changed the way the game is told as much as Parker thinks so.....if he loves those 2 emcees that much then thats fine but stop trying to sell me on how much they have "evolved" the game and made the game so much more "complex" and then the moment that someone disagrees with him on that then they are "ignorant" and "don't know what they are talking about"???
Parker that sounds stupid and extra sensitive....jeffrey has surfaced once again....Like I said to B.Shaw if he believes that the game is in better shape now then it was back in the 80's and 90's well then we have different overall standards for hip-hop music and if that's the case then that's all good too....it explains a bunch to me about why we have none of the same interests and that's okay too....if everyone was the same then this place would be boring.....

I quoted in bold what I agreed with about Parker's post. Less sub genres = less comp = everybody likes the same handfull of artists. I was not putting down Rakim, IMO back then he was probably one of deepest you could dig for, but how do I know I was in elementry school. I don't put artists down like alot of you (ya I saw your 25 wackest rappers list Powell). Parker made a good point as to why you & KJ have basicly the same list of GOAT's, and I let him know I thought it was a good point, nothing more nothing less.

I think too many heads have touched it and fucked it up....more heads doing it means more fingerprints all over it ruining it's shine...my thoughts would be different if these dudes would have just washed their hands first before touching it but they went and put their dirty hands all over everything and tried to ruin it....
I'm not putting anything "down" I'm just giving my opinion on things that I consider WACK....now I know that this may offend a bunch of sensitive "dudes" in a hip-hop forum but that has never been my concern, I love hip-hop music and culture and if I think something is wack then that's what I'm going to call it....just like others that post here have done in the past.....no big deal...let's keep up the debates and recognize these fundamental differences...that's all!
