This is a sick record. Sabzi is a beast and Geologic doesn't sound like he belongs on Def Poetry Jam anymore. What's good Tran?

This was the worst thing I've heard between Common Market and Blue Scholars... pretentious production and boring lyrics.

@ CTRX bigging this album up, but giving it a 6 at Rapreviews.
This is my album of the year, it's what I bump mostly in the whip. Sabzi is on another level.

Damn! I've been sleeping!!!!!!!!!
Just ordered the CD + digital download from the Blue Scholars site. Looking forward to some new tunes. I've been so preoccupied with disc golf this year so far, I've barely made time to search and buy new music....just been bumping old school shit lately.

You only been sleeping about three weeks or so, they dropped the digital version early to those who pledged. Hussein, Cinemetropolis, Tommy Chong, Anna Karina, George Jackson, Rani Mukerji, just soo many bangers on here. Hussein is probably my favorite track, that beat is killer.

I'm trying to think of another way to explain what I'm hearing, and I'm not coming up with much else.
It just seems like Sabzi really felt he was making something awe-inspiring and amazing, but to me it's just so-so at best.
I hear what you're saying, Alan. Sometimes we can safely use each others' opinions in a paradoxical manner.
I'd like to clarify that I'm not trying to insult anyone or anyone else's taste. I can only give my opinion on it.

Dude must get so much pussy with that china cabinet helmet and those dishwasher gloves...
I can't tell if you understand where I'm coming from or not, but this definitely qualifies as pretentious over here.
This may be my new favorite video ever. If I ever saw these guys live I would honestly have to brainstorm on reasons why not to attack the vocalist.

I think I get what you're saying. I guess we have different ideas of pretentious...although I haven't heard this album yet. I may totally agree with you after I hear it.
But my main point is that regardless of how pretentious an artist gets it doesn't really subtract too much from the quality of the music for me. However, if I don't like an artist it makes for great pot shots.

Tran, this shit is dope. I'm enjoying it more and more with each listen. Lots of nice beats from Sabzi and Geologic is doing his thing nicely. My only complaint is that it's pretty slow all the way through. I think I learned The Long March EP is my favorite cause it's all bangers. That said, I like the direction here. Definitely worthy of the purchase. 4 stars as of now...

I guess Steely Dan is pretentious....also hilarious. Nevertheless, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker are 2 of the best damn musicians I've ever heard. I will forever love Steely Dan's entire catalog...I own em all. They have earned the right to be extremely pretentious.
Pearl Jam? Not really seeing it. Unless you mean their stance against corporate control over music. Then yes. I guess Metallica is extremely pretentious too.
Not seeing it with Sabzi at all. When I bump Blue Scholars I don't hear anything pretentious in the least. Maybe you see me and Tran boasting about his skills and you feel he's overrated. Sabzi is just another producer in this underground rap thing. Blue Scholars are all about being "ordinary". Cocky would never be the word I'd use to describe them. Sure. Lyrics can (rarely) be preachy - just like any lyrics with a message. I met these dudes, and they are just really chill cool dudes. Sabzi does not act like he's god's gift to hip-hop or nothing.

Yeah, you're not really getting it. Not on you though... it's just an abstraction I'm not finding better words for. I'm definitely not trying to slander Sabzi as a person, or even as a producer. I am solely trying to describe my impression of the music.
Pretentious is the word I want.
Not too important, really.

It's not a perception of his personality though? Nor Eddie Vedder's or Fagen's? I mean, one wrong interview/question/answer can turn someone into a pretentious douche bag IMO. It just happens.
So when you hear Sabzi, you hear music from a man who thinks he's making the BEST music in hip-hop? He thinks he's super advanced or something?
I just though of an example of a pretentious producer - El-P. Is he really pretentious though? Not that much IMO, but definitely far more than Sabzi ever was, or will be.

El-P sounds pretentious too then? It makes absolutely zero sense to me, but as long as it makes sense to you....even if you're alone on the matter....
Tran,
I May have to take back a couple comments on Cinematropolis. There's definitely a few bangers in the mix here. I think I was initially thrown off by Sabzi's minimal beat style, but they definitely pick up the pace on a few cuts. I must have bumped it a solid 7 times now. Great to see them back with some dope material....a fine addition to the catalog.
Finally something good for 2011. It must be the only purchasable album I've really dug so far this year. Sadly, I've bought at least 6 or 7 albums and have been disappointed in all of them until now. lol

When you stop to hit your T-shirt with the iron, you need to leave it a little wrinkled. You don't want starched creases on your shirt all the time, because you'll look like a pretentious asshole who irons his shirt right before going out.
This album sounds to me like they squeezed all the life out of it for an attempt at a perfect sound. Most of Sabzi's music sounds like that, but always to a lesser degree. I'd rather listen to something a bit more human.
That's just my take on these guys. It truly seems like you others get an entirely different experience, and that's great. I can't speak on what you hear. I probably wouldn't if I could, because that wouldn't be much of a conversation.

I actually listened to this album today. By far the weakest I've heard from these guys. I totally understand where parker is coming from with his "pretentious" complaint. Constant references to movies in the lyrics, a bunch track names are the names of art film directors (Seijun Suzuki, for example), and there is a sort of an attempt at grandiosity in the beats. If you see this Tran, no Sabzi isn't predictable anymore. This is definitely a new style for him. Unfortunately, I don't like the direction he's going in with the production. I miss the old style -even if I did think a lot of tracks sounded similar, he did make some hard hitting tracks. This album is sounding like background music to me. I'll listen to it again to be fair...but I don't see myself liking it all of a sudden.

This must be the first album you ever listened to by Blue Scholars? Maybe Bayani too? Not even close to accurate when considering older material...
I can't be more clear that I'm representing my opinion. Or that I respect your opinion. Accuracy is not an applicable concept, here.
Just sayin'....
Their first 2 albums are on some old school b-boy type shit, and your comments make no sense when considering those albums. I don't care if that is actually your opinion. I just feel you are representing their music all wrong to those who don't know their material. So I gotta call ignorance (or lack of accuracy) on some of these comments...
I've always felt I should like them more than I do. I've listened to the self-titled, Long March, Butter&gun$, Bayani, and now this one.
I think I'm giving an honest, educated, open-minded assessment of their music. It just doesn't happen to be how you feel. I don't think it would be fair representation if alternate views weren't included.
