PostSubject: Concepts & Subject Matters Day 3   Sun 04 Mar 2012, 1:01 pm

I was going to buy Ready To Die just based off hearing Juicy. I was pretty much cool if Biggie turned out to only be the type of rapper I heard in Juicy. What I did not see coming was the song I chose for today. Gimmie The Loot really grabbed my attention. To hear Biggie come from the point of view of not one but two people who need money and is willing to do whatever for it. And not rap it in a typical fashion was dope to me. The back and forth between two cats sharing the point of view of desperation. Puts me in mind of what Warren G said on Do You See "who's really the victim the person doing the jacking or the person being jacked?"

Notorious B.I.G. "Gimmie The Loot"

This track is bad ass... one of my faves from the album...

I agree... the dual perspectives are incredible... the voice changes... everything...

this is probably the first track I ever heard that had this type of approach...

Maybe the only one... I'm trying to remember... anyways... excellent song...

Rest in Peace Biggie Smalls...

You both hit the nail right on the head. I remember the first time I heard this song, I kept checking the liner notes. I could have sworn the other Biggie voice was Mr. Funky from L.O.T.U.G.

lol...you know what I use to hesitate to talk too much about his song 1st few listens because I did not want anyone to ask me who the other rapper was and I did not know.

For the record Pac did the two voice from one person thing before Biggie did. Go peep Soldiers Story and Papaz Song. The way Pac delivered his was not as creative though in a delivery sense.

I know this doesn't really pertain to the thread...

But I was so glad I had the opportunity to see Biggie perform this live in 1995...

In Anaheim...

Of course... when he did perform this song... Puff Daddy was chanting the lines with

Him... which kind of took away the effect of actual record...

For the fact that I sometimes assume that the other voice served as the conscious of

Biggie....

Anyways... the performance was great... I wouldn't take that day back for anything...

Yeah, I saw him perform this track live too, at Giants Stadium during Summer Jam 1995. Diddy was chanting the lines along with him at that show too, and at the end of the track, a bunch of fake money was thrown in the air and everybody was scrambling for it and swore it was real!!!

That said, this is an incredible track. Pac did the double character thing first on Soldier Story, but Biggie did it in a way which you actually thought it was somebody else. It wasn't until you read the linear notes inside the tape or CD cover that you saw that Biggie was playing both characters. Simply awesome!

I'll definitely participate...I'm not promising that it will be every song you post though. There will probably be a few that I haven't heard.

I especially want to hear the opinions on the songs you never heard. Thats why i'm posting the youtube links. Check'em out when those unknowns to you come up and drop what you thought about it. Good or bad.

That's funny, I thought it was pretty obvious that it was Biggie doing two voices. Regardless, this was and is a really creative track and a classic, of course. I thought DMX did a really good job doing the same thing on a bunch of his tracks.

"I thought it was pretty obvious that it was Biggie doing two voices"

It was pretty obvious to me the first time I heard it that it was Biggie rapping in 2 different voices. My friend from high school fairly recently was like, what ever happened to that other dude that was rapping on Gimme The Loot. I said dude you're trying to tell me that you didn't know that was Biggie doing 2 different voices. He said Not at all.
