Greetings all, looks like we've made it to Volume 4, anyone been waiting? lol... I have now added a poll just for kicks.

I don't think I have many NY albums at all to nominate because I feel most of it is already fairly well known, but hopefully this one's not so.

Today I have chosen Streetwize by J Rock, from back in 91 on Ghetto Groovez Records.

Let's see... Think of maybe Jeru The Damaja's voice/accent, but toned down a bit, combined with a delivery like an early Lord Finesse, I'm talkin Funky Technician style... (although J's delivery can vary on some tracks compared with others) But that's what this album makes me think of. The tracks I have linked to today don't quite prove what I'm saying here, but he has an obvious influence from Lord Finesse's Funky Technician, and this Streetwize album, produced by DJ Premier, Easy Mo Bee and J Rock himself, could literally almost qualify as a sequel to the Lord Finesse debut. Only difference is, J Rock's punchlines are not quite as fancy as Finesse, although he is still good to listen to, and while he applies consciousness to the album, he also adds a lot of street elements into his rhymes (police, drugs etc).

There's some classic beats on here, which again, reinforces the whole Funky Technician sequel thing(sorry, I can't help but say it). Old James Brown sampling and the like, funky saxophone and guitars. They really carry this album into a possible classic status. If you haven't got this album, you are missing out, a gem from it's era. I would have to say probably 4.5-4.75 Good day homies

V.3 > OTR Clique - Streets Deeper Than The Grave [1995]
V.2 > Chuck Nutt - Give It Up [1999]
V.1 > PG-13 - Rollin Wit Da PG [1990]

Damn, why are the songs so short? This does sound like a slept on gem. The production sounds real dope. J-Rock is cool too, I can dig him, nothing special, but solid on the mic.

Yeah hes pretty str8. Nothing very special about him but tight. He's a str8 up clone of that early 90's east coast rap.

If I saw him in a .99 and under bin I would buy it easily.
