Whether on a commercial or underground level no other coast or region is fuckin' wit the east. Anybody frontin' on the east is delusional. Whether you prefer the sound or not you havta recognize it as the mecca supreme. Love it of hate it. Yes the east was responsible for Hip hop crossing over to the pop-world, but it was also responsible for the under/indie movement too. Where would the underground be w/o Rawkus Records.MF Doom, El-P,Kool Keith. Hell, Kool Keith was doing that indie label movement before Master P, The East coast contribution to hip hop is staggering. I'm like NY rappers alone will slump you over the steering wheel but add-in Philly and New Jerusalem and its a mass murder. No matter what sound you like whether Jazzy,Boom-bap, ot electronica the east got you covered. Those stubbornly waving flags for their hometown just dont know the magnitude of the East-coast. People want to rebel against the east coast with no good grounds of defiance. I'm not saying other regions dont have major talent. What makes the east so great is the evolution for their music. While other regions have just settled for a specific sound, the east is steadily pushing the envelope.

If some researcher who didn't know shit about hip hop did a fair and unbiased analysis of the different of hip hop he or she will come to one cnclusion: THE EAST IS A BEAST,BABY!!!!

The west and south are pioneers of that due to being shut out the east coast mainstream machine that ran the 80's and early 90's. It forced them to develop fan bases in their region and sell their product hand to hand. I respect and like the east coast sound and it's contributions but they only built the frame the other regions added the features.

Don't get me wrong, I DO NOT discriminate against any MC's based on where they are from, there are bangin MC's from every coast, just as they are wack MC's from every coast. But regardless of where your allegiance lies, you've got to admit that there are more Hall Of Fame MC's from the East Coast than anywhere else. After all NYC is the birthplace of hip-hop, so it had at least 5 or 6 year headstart on everyone. Hip-Hop started in about 1979 or so, and it didn't become widespread anywhere else until about 1986.

Run-DMC was the group that made hip-hop mainstream, so every artist that has came out since should pay homage to them. As for the underground, I would say the East has been the overall leader in that catagory as well. The only difference is that underground artists in the East usually end up becoming mainstream (Wu-Tang, The LOX, 50 Cent, Canibus, etc) whereas in other regions many of them stay underground.

Forget what's been going on the last couple years, I'm talking about the Big Picture which is the overall history of hip-hop. Conventional wisdom says that the East Coast has historically produced the most GOAT artists, and for those of you that disagree, do your homework and you'll see for yourself. Even rap artists past and present will tell you that.

Again, I'm not hatin on the West Coast, Midwest, or The South as I love artists from everywhere, but East Coast hip-hop is just like the New York Yankees, it might not win championships every year, but it's produced the most champions, and is always a threat to win the championship. Feel what I'm sayin, y'all??

That's a very good way to put it.

Hip Hop was going on in the south and west in the early 80's also, the east coast had access to the majors so they were never really underground for long. Also the west and south had to show the east how to hustle these record companies and get their worth. I get tired of folks just dwelling on who started rap but who changed the game? Who breathed new air into hip hop? Who stayed more consistant?

the south rules hip-hop in 2009 and NYC has been steadily copying from these guys since about 2000...

and the West as Kev said did add on more features to the "car" per se' but the EAST/NYC is the best that ever did it...they built the car from scratch and they were the first to drive the damn thing too...and they drove that bitch till the wheels fell off

the south noticed the abandoned Lexus on the side of the highway and decided to refurbish it and bring it back to life but with a southern look to it

they may have reburbished but I'm not exactly sure if they brought it back to life the way it was running before they touched it!

Whoa dat ass is huge!!! But anyway, the problem is that people have such high expectations for the east. If people held the same expectations for other regions they will come up short too. Thing is is that the east still got it. Alot of people dont give the east a fair chance and wait for the east to erupt with somethin' that grabs the attention of the general public. I admit other regions do support their artist more. For some reason east coasters have deemed Jay-Z as the only relevant artist. But music wise even golden agers still got some juice left like Large Pro and Nas. I used to advocate the west is the best now. And they do have some uncompromising talent but the east still got 'em. But its the east determination thats great even if the odds are against them.

What's funny though and ironic is 10 yrs or so from now or right now the younger generation from the east coast will be debating with you older cats about how Lil Wayne and TI is betta than Big Daddy Kane and Rakim. So look down on the souths reign all you want but the south is here now.

The main problem I have with the east coast is their unabashed pride at what they've accomplished without any real driving power to move forward. I think that's the problem though - for as much as people tout the quality of the music from all regions and all time periods, a lot of people like to judge the south based on the wackest of the wack. That would be like me listening to Chicken Noodle soup and saying the East was garbage or listening to young mc and saying the west never made anything of substance.

It's stupid to make generalizations based on anything. There's been good music coming from every region for years now and it's silly to really try to make a case for any region being dominant. When the east, west, or south were dominating there was always good music to be found in the other regions it just had to be sought after.

The East became too insular about it's success and that's what lead to its loss of dominance. They ignored the larger demographic. When the South and West rose this is why they were abandoned. Folks had their own blockstars that deserved shine. They told the non-East Coast MC that their product wouldn't move and they were wrong. They saw Southerners as country and backward and didn't let them in so when the West/South broke in on their own the outsiders realized that the East didn't hold the exclusive keys to rap success. You have to get in where you fit in. Explaining your style to an organization that doesn't truly understand you is a no win scenario. You're trying to slang pork in Mecca. Just because they don't eat it there doesn't mean people don't like bacon.
