Is anybody in here into instrumental Jazz? So far, my jazz game is limited. I like Miles Davis, but I haven't gotten into Thelonious Monk yet because I don't know where to start. That's the case with a lot of jazz musicians, I just don't know where to start. So I'm asking if there is anybody who could point me in the right direction for some smooth instrumental jazz? Who should I start with and what albums?

Check out Monk & Coltrane together. Like most jazz musicians, his catalog ranges from accessible to 'way out there'.

I don't remember the name of the album, but it's a live show. Very smooth.

Also (personal favs):
Coltrane and Jackson
pretty much any Coltrane except 'Giant Steps'
Lester Young
Cannonball Adderly
Duke Ellington

The Ken Burns Collection is a great place to start, but you lose the continuity that a straight through album is usually meant to convey. The DVDs are carried by most public libraries, I'm sure.

Yo, whats up A Scott.

I co-sign all of Parkers choices except Giant steps. I love Giant steps, it is different, but I enjoy it every time I spin it.

Here some more:

Robert Glasper-->He's a pianist who mixes his hip hop roots into his Jazz music..
Eric Person--->He plays the sax and his shit is blazing..Good stuff
Soweto Kinch--->You can't go wrong with Soweto. He's another jazz musician that mixes hip hop with his Jazz and he plays the sax.
Herbie Hancock--->I would look for his older stuff.
Branford Marsalis--->Check out Eternal.

Let me know how does work out for you. If you need some more recs holla.

Peace

Are there any particular albums from Robert Glasper, Eric Person, or Herbie Hancock I should start with?
