| Is anybody in here into instrumental Jazz? So far, my jazz game is limited. I like Miles Davis, but I haven't gotten into Thelonious Monk yet because I don't know where to start. That's the case with a lot of jazz musicians, I just don't know where to start. So I'm asking if there is anybody who could point me in the right direction for some smooth instrumental jazz? Who should I start with and what albums? |

| Check out Monk & Coltrane together. Like most jazz musicians, his catalog ranges from accessible to 'way out there'.
I don't remember the name of the album, but it's a live show. Very smooth.
Also (personal favs): Coltrane and Jackson pretty much any Coltrane except 'Giant Steps' Lester Young Cannonball Adderly Duke Ellington
The Ken Burns Collection is a great place to start, but you lose the continuity that a straight through album is usually meant to convey. The DVDs are carried by most public libraries, I'm sure. | |

| Yo, whats up A Scott.
I co-sign all of Parkers choices except Giant steps. I love Giant steps, it is different, but I enjoy it every time I spin it.
Here some more:
Robert Glasper-->He's a pianist who mixes his hip hop roots into his Jazz music.. Eric Person--->He plays the sax and his shit is blazing..Good stuff Soweto Kinch--->You can't go wrong with Soweto. He's another jazz musician that mixes hip hop with his Jazz and he plays the sax. Herbie Hancock--->I would look for his older stuff. Branford Marsalis--->Check out Eternal.
Let me know how does work out for you. If you need some more recs holla.
Peace | |
