| 1998 was another heavy year for just a quanity of overall quality. May not have been many surefire classics but there were a lot of good albums to choose from. This was also one of the big years of the record label posse's for No Limit, Ruff Ryders, Cash Money, Roc-A -fella, and Def Jam. These 5 labels had the game on lock and were fighting for top position over the other. If I remember right Cash Money and Ruff Ryders and a major tour going on either this year or in 1999 due to the success of this year. Then you had Dungeon Family, Rap-A-Lot, and Suave House dropping some gems. Also some Wu offspring jumping hard into the game (Cappa, Killah, Darkman). 10 of my fav's Still Standing Lost Aquemini The Dude Rhythm-al-ism Its Dark and Hell Is Hot N.O.R.E Now or Never My Homies Vol. 1 Shell Shocked and Life or Death http://www.amazon.com/Top-Hip-Hop-Albums-of-1998/lm/R39S1H0T0Q09EY/ref=cm_lm_byauthor_title_full |

Cappadonna - The Pillage Wu Tang Killa Beez - The Swarm La the Darkman -Heist of the Century Killarmy - Dirty Weaponry Killah Priest - Heavy Mental Sunz of Man - Last Shall Be First
also the year Ghost debuted his new style on "Cobra Clutch"
KRob had a bunch of good picks obviously, but i thought id add this to the discussion

| LOL @ "hip-hop's last great year".
Great year though...my personal top 5....
1. Outkast "Aquemini" 2. Mos Def & Talib Kweli "Black Star" 3. The Coup "Steal This Album" 4. Beastie Boys "Hello Nasty" 5. Gang Starr "Moment of Truth" (though Hieroglyphics and Goodie Mob come awfully close)
The first three are the only one's I really feel are 5 star albums...even though arguments could be made for many...

| I disagree about 98 being hip-hop's last great year. I thought 2000 and 2001 were pretty stellar as well.
1998 was a great year though. Some great albums from that year.....
Aquemini Moment Of Truth The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill BlackStar Capital Punishment Vol 2. Hard Knock Life (Most people in this forum hate that album, but I like it) El Nino Still Standing Steal This Album 400 Degreez Hello Nasty It's Dark And Hell Is Hot Doc's The Name 2000 Rhythm-A-Lism
and many more......

Apparently, you've learned absolutely nothing about me over the years: Top years for me go: 1991 1994 1993 1992 Knonam dropped in 2008. And is still currently the best of the year IMO. Blu & Exile is a 4.5 star album IMO.
