After the first spin, giving this a 3.5. That's a little generous, but I can tell they put a lot of work into this even if it's not my cup of tea. Thoughts?

LMAO!!!
But anyways, Jeff's ratings have been suspect in the past so I'll take that with a grain of salt.
I haven't downloaded the leak yet and I'm not sure I will. I'll probably wait until it's released to listen to it. I will say this though, people that dislike reggae music probably won't like it as much, just like people that don't like R&B didn't like Ghostdini. And people who aren't into Nas (Cory, SRP, Linker) should avoid it altogether.
I'm not expecting a classic here as it's an experimental album, but as long as it's 4 star quality I won't complain.

It's not experimental in the least. It's rap beats with a reggae tinge and a rapper and a psuedo reggae artist rap/singing over them. And my ratings are suspect? At least they're consistent, fool.
That said, KJ you hater you, you'll probably think it's a four star album.

Damian Marley is NOT a psuedo reggae artist. He's a TRUE reggae artist. He's the son of the greatest reggae artist of all time and very talented.
And this album IS experimental as Nas has never done a full length that's crossed over with another genre.

Damian Marley is a dancehall artist. Period. Show me a TRUE reggae album of his.
And when I think "experimental" I think of the music as being new and different, not hackneyed and redundant.

I'm looking forward to this. Damien's music tends to be more hip hop oriented than the rest of his family.

Exactly, N3RO. Out of all the GYC, Ky-Mani is the only one that grew up/lived most of his life in the states, so he has more of a hip hop influence in his music than his brothers. Damian has hip hop influence in his music as well, because they still love American music in Jamaica the same way in Bob's day he was influenced by Doo Wop & Soul. Stephen has hip hop influence to a lesser extent, but his voice sounds the most like his dad's, so it's natural he would lean more to the roots. Julian & Ziggy don't really mess with it.

I should give Stephen a litte more hip hop cred due to his production, when I said lesser extent I meant his vocals.

I loved Mind Control. I think that's the type of thing Bob would be doing if he hadn't passed.
Now, that's an example of an artist that was more than an artist. Probably the New World personality most deserving of sainthood.

I think this album's amazing. Well done on all fronts, probably the best thing I've heard all year.
The only concern I had going in was Nas' ego. Not that his is exceptional in the hip hop world. I just figured an emcee would end up overpowering a reggae album. Not so. They mesh perfectly.
After three spins in a row (I can't even tell you when the last time I've bothered to do that...) I have no problem calling this a 4 star album with expectations of more. I just want to be patient with higher praises.

I just peeped some songs on youtube and if the entire album is like that then this one sounds like it will be dope and Nas best work in a while so I think I will be purchasing this one.

I definitely agree with that. Both Nas and Damian made a cohesive album. Nas definitely got some shit off his chest speaking on that Kelis issue. I forgot what track it was, but he def went in on her.

Just got finished listening to this album today (wasn't able to get to it yesterday, its release date, lol). I like what I heard here, obviously. I'm rating it 4 - 4.5 stars right now. I can't objectively give it 5 stars (for right now at least). This was something different for Nas and I feel he and Damian Marley should be proud of this album.

Damn, I was going to buy this one today...since I really like both of Nas' last albums. But the reggae thing deters me a little bit. I've tried to like reggae so many times in the past, but I think I'll just have to face the fact that it's not my cup of tea after so many failed attempts. How heavy is the reggae influence?

This is basically a reggae album with Nas rapping on it. I don't know what reggae you have tried out though - this is not ziggy marley sounding stuff - it is dancehall/ragga so if you have not tried that you might dig it. Personally I am surprised a weed smoker such as yourself isn't already familiar with Damian

With the exception of a couple of songs, the reggae influence is heavy on this album IMO. It's still worth the purchase.

I've heard some Damian...I own some Bob Marley. My roommate owns a few reggae albums that I've heard many times. I wouldn't call any of it bad - it just doesn't move me like most other genres. I'll have to try before I buy.

Well, Bob Marley is different from Damian... I like some roots reggae, but I can not stand a whole album of it. It depends on what your roommate has. I dig guys like Mavado, Bounty Killer, Damian Marley, Stephen Marley, Buju Banton.

Well then, I think most of what my roommate listens to is roots reggae then. I do notice quite a big difference in Damian's work though. That does feel more accessible to me.

Interesting messages like science is bullshit. Nas still needs to keep some of his ludicris opinions to himself.

Nas kind of phoned it in. He's not really well suited to this kind of thing anyway, he's better just telling stories and throwing out imagery than trying to get topical on social matters. He has this weird thing in the fact that he's almost completely lacking in formal education, but very naturally intelligent, so he's pretty patchy when it comes to this, since it's all stuff he's picked up on his own and he doesn't seem to have a filter to weed out the bullshit.

He can seem pretty dumb at times. I didn't feel it was a huge issue on this album, though. No more than usual, at least.
As far as his take on science vs religion, that's his point of view. He's entitled. And a collaboration with a lifestyle Rastafarian is nothing but an appropriate forum.
I, myself, agree with the scientific accounts of history. However, it is too often overlooked that, either way, you reach a point where a leap of faith is required.
