lol, that was my point, exactly. Some people seem to think that just because an artist is dope, their tastes must be superior to every one else's and it doesn't work that way. |

| I agree about It Was Written, it is better than Illmatic lyrically.

| Damn, this guy is on CRACK!!
The only one of those opinions that I could see as even close to legit is him liking ATCQ's albums in decending order. While I don't share that opinion, I'm in agreement that the first 3 ATCQ albums are all classics, and they'd all make my Top 50 of all time. |

| The reason It Was Written isn't equal to, or better than, Illmatic as an overall album is that the production is vastly inferior and much less consistent, plus there is this whole idea of artifice in the perspective, subject matter and style Nas adopted, so its perceived as less legit and real than Illmatic. But you line the lyrics up side by side, look at the technical proficiency, and I'd take It Was Written as well. There's nothing on Illmatic as conceptually developed and well executed as "I Gave You Power" and just in general, Nas' imagery is as strong as ever, but there's a little more fluidity in how he's constructing his lyrics, and a more consistent internal narrative to the songs. His storytelling skill is on full display on It Was Written, more than on Illmatic. He's also more diverse as a writer.
People have this whole complex when it comes to Illmatic, like it's the album form manifestation of Jesus Christ, so I don't expect people to agree, but whatever. It's not so crazy. In fact, I don't see what's so crazy about most of what J-Zone's saying, not that I agree with them all.

I'm a fan of It Was Written and consider it a classic as well. However, Illmatic has higher highs, and is chock full of 5 star tracks. I Gave You Power is an excellent concept song and dope lyrically. But I'd take It Ain't Hard To Tell, The World Is Yours, NY State Of Mind, and One Love over it. The best song on IWW is The Message IMO. Songs like Watch Them N****s, Suspect, Black Girl Lost, and Shootouts bring the album down. They aren't wack songs by any means BUT they're the reason why many people don't consider IWW a classic. It SUCKS that they took Silent Murder off the reprint of the album. They should have taken one of the aforementioned three songs off instead. Silent Murder was a fuckin BANGER!!!! Bottom line. Illmatic is like MJ's Thriller, and It Was Written is more like MJ's Bad. Both are classics, but it's easy to see which is better. |

| It was a murder Jake just hit the corner people swarming Three in the morning I jumped out my cab like "Fuck, niggaz is buck," mega bloodshed, the tapes red I heard some bird whisper, "Yo he should have ducked" I puffed the lilla, just before I hit the scene for rilla I'm all high it's late I'm looking down at the fella Shit's pushed in, ambulance placed him on some cushion His mom's had a stare I wouldn't dare second look when I murk It hurt, kind of took it as a brief reminder that the street's designed to stop your life, plot The beast in time yeah, cell to cell suspect ass bunny you fell First time locked in crime stop my mind blocks the frail Bursting blasting at your forty cal shell, split your dry cell My bunnies never snitch why tell We roll with no regrets, destiny's, fifty's and equities Queens'll be the death of me
The way he paints a scene here is excellent. And this is one of the songs that supposedly brings the album down. It's hard to separate the lyrics from everything else, and that everything else is why the album is considered inferior to Illmatic, and is inferior to Illmatic, but remember that what we're talking about here is just lyrics. Not that the songs are better. Not that the album is better. That when you line the lyrics up side-by-side, that It Was Written is a more accomplished album.

You're right. I was still buying tapes at that time. When my cassette broke I copped the CD and Silent Murder wasn't on it. |

The "Suspect" verse I posted isn't even the best on the album, maybe not even one of the best, but in a shorter span he painted a whole murder scene, in full panorama, from his reaction, to the emotion of the mom, the lookers on, and then he took that out to a broader point. He basically said the same thing about the way the city operates, and how he's forced to approach it to survive, but in a much more efficient way, painting a scene to make it more real and evocative.

| Of course you think it's less impressive because YOU posted it. But that NY State Of Mind verse is far superior IMO. Both verses paint pictures, but the verse I posted personifies life in the hood.
And the verse I posted isn't the best on Illmatic either, just went with the first related verse that came to my head. |

| I think it's less impressive because I'm less impressed with how he got across his point, and that's pretty consistent when comparing the two albums. | |

both those tracks are dope as fuck Read my above post again. I never said that they weren't dope, but they're not among the best tracks on IWW, nor are they as good as any of the tracks on Illmatic IMO. |

Look, I like J-Zone, and the whole reason I started this thread was to parody another thread on this very website, but clearly no one got it (except one person who shall remain nameless). The list was real, and my feelings on it are real, but the point clearly wasn't gotten. |
