Subject: My Ghostface Rant Wed 16 Mar 2011, 12:45 am
Alright to start this thread off i'd like to first say that Ghost doesn't have to prove or do anything, he can retire right now never spit again and his legacy will be solidified as a legend. That said, if he's going to continue rapping can you please at least give us some shell of your younger self???
Bulletproof Wallets and some of Pretty Toney was the last time Ghostface was really, well, Ghostface.
Rather than the stream of conscience story-telling rhymes he has been giving us NFL metaphors and punchlines lately that haven't lived up to the Ghostface that made him who he is today. If he spit the way he did on Fishscale or Big Doe Rehab on Supreme Clientele the album would only be a 4 star album...
Lets take a look at what im talking about
For example compare:
Aiyyo we dazzle off this bloody version of 'Glaciers' Slang shot threw a gem in his mouth, swallowed his razor (wsssht) Say no more, my back be parked against the wall Trooper square holding, 'Face don't give a fuck about the law Take off the bracelets, don't get blinded by the ice Boo It's not cool, Veronica slept, plus the decimal Look at my jumper logo look familiar? It's Power (Where is he?) Yo every fine snitch knocks an inch off Eddie Bauer Gucci sneaker rockin just another form of 'Chessboxin' No cock-blockin, supreme clientele, till I'm droppin Kangol slanted, Ghost'll ran with it, hippie hung-out Club bandit never empty-handed when I brand it Mark callin Austin, Mark callin Austin down in Boston Both of them dead, cop in the loft and big chain swingin bunny, Matchbox car drivin Street whylin, Role' with the four-finger glidin Watch him, scorchin with spells and top toxin Amoxins til the stock skyrocket, Bobby Mocassin Switched from Pert Plus, escrow on the side throw in sun trust Ghost'll keep shinin til the sun bust yo word up, born-to-be right behind the curtain with her nose out Sixty center get the Rover out Featherhead heathens, teethin on mic dicks When thy said, "Let the kids die for your bread bunny!"
WITH this
Yo, yo, it was the night before he got popped Big jars of haze, Cheech & Chong bong in the spot Tropicana, strawberries, diced bananas The long dookie fifth, next to the Town House crackers Mad noise, 2008, a G a game I’m ridin on {?} in the love seat, sunk deep Long niggaz bustin out they punk heat I make a massacre, try to rob one of my donkeys But I ain’t wettin that I don’t wanna send nobody back, violently, fakin that Promise you, got somethin Lord that’ll honor you Blow your little head off while you’re tyin your shoe But back in the kitchen, Pyrex’s Occupied by the twins, bank robbers with large records Hard vest-es, ’86 ga-ga John{?} Benatar rockin some frames and fake guns when they rob Sha Born ’til then they snatch you, axe you Play the squid-ad, we gettin at you And we don’t wanna rap to you, it’s not kosher It’s not a code in la costa nostra to roast ya I get a lil’ closer Rock you to sleep, like I got these lil’ bitches, come over! Hopin you fall for the bait, thinkin you safe Have that ass sweatin like T.D. Jakes I want the ones bunny, you non-believers you can ask your momma … Now that’s drama
The difference is like night and day. Its like hes just going through the motions nowadays...still pretty dope but its not GFK dope
Good Ghostface: starting at 1:57 I'm like spider-man's fifth brohter up in the clan Drop like crap's that's scattered all up in ya van Skelly-man crook, character star In donna boines book Mgm, heaven and hell, sat with the cook With the big spice bone, red hair's is killin' me Knotted up, twisted and green Seen them crystal's in that rap yo And get barear Bear hug and five hundered ounce of that staision Wild man, sarah Rush after hours, alpha in the beds Caked hands like dai smith, rap haggler with a fade Magillia, charli baltimore with hazel driftin' withdrawels Wind face start with the killah Stood still, a whole river chill Looked up and got dogged, that's when rza started to build
Aye yo, you craze me, turtleneck bunny rockin' pasley Shots crazily, steady blazin' where the spaids be Teams like starsky and hutch, you put deluxe truck Ya bankrupt, 52's knox, I heard you ku klux, damn Tear it out the van, sweat it with a tan With get like remo spray can, suga the ram Fuck a cocktail, get my balls licked in hell Read his igloo tales, hell all the dogs with broken tails Salt range, short order tab Ironman, bubble bath, nuclear, split the atom in half Meet dime o's, fifth brother bug inside 8 pole Change though, crush the birds inside the strip pose
VS.
Average Ghost:
Get your nose blowned off by the fifth, uh You wanna be there, layin' all stiff, uh Everytime you go uptown, you get jipped, uh That's karma, boy, running your lip, uh You be fronting like you got a bunch of chicks, uh You be at home, bunny, beating your dick, uh I'm in the club with the chipped up wrist, uh You at the bar, whoadie, drinkin' my piss, uh The yellow shit, and the bottle ain't Crys', son You turned your muthafuckin' head, bunny, we switched 'em You just mad cause I'm hittin' your sister You in the other room, huh, you couldn't sleep, uh Pop a lotta shit without that liquor, yup We mind seat up, so take our picture I'm like the boogeyman, bunny, I'll get ya Whether now or later, afterlife, or switcher
The rhyme style is so much more dumbed down on Be Easy...simple lines, simple cadence...
Here is GREAT Ghost..maybe the single most complex verse i have ever heard:
Eh yo, the beat terminal, exquisite young coolie high production Caught up in the hollow-head suction Ten pogo sticks, two black-belts that break bricks Diet coke meetin's with the rich I'm faithfully married to rap We've been engaged for twelve years Tyson bite Holyfield ear We love the sport, look out your window Now see, pull up to say, yall be amazed me Tony Starks, spaceship, ran by a daughter's cellar Only man out, walked through hell Dick swingin like shit went well Call it the mighty Joe Young Double-swirl slush, Wonder Woman, sapphire shit with the pearls It looked real nice, yo, heavy on the gravy Third, bag a secretary in the glaze, he tagged eighty words From Whirl-winds to whirl-pools, see wise watch the earth spin Sunny-dance with the serpent, who shot JJ and its my bone The same bunny ridin the train, same bunny with his name on the jacket Switch to chaseable, inhaled the bad bag of that Jason Fell out twice in the basement Straight up and down, yall
and then he doe this?? Where is the flavor, the character that Ghost used to be??
Yo, what's the science, little bunny? Yo, you beefing too hard I throw five in your Champ hood, and envy your squad You try to stick out your fucking hand, nah, I don't want no dap, bunny Fucking lucky you ain't get glammed Bitch ass bunny, you wrong, yo, you mingle with rats The other day you got caught with the gat, bunny How you home, bunny? Why you even up in my square? Like you get busy, got the block hot and stare Fresh coffins fast, they spitting, ya'll fake bitches Snitches get mad love, hundred and eight stitches My condolences, word life, if they can find you a real killa Someone close is singing like the Jonases Crime Stoppers, the tips keep pouring in For a G, you be suprised who's going in Block huggers, the ones who be holding they jock And suck my cock, the real cock lovers
Holocaust (Silkworm) was what made Ghost Ghost, its the type of verse NO ONE could write, but the verse on Dangeorus could have been written by hundreds of rappers, is he bored and nt trying?? is it the lack of drugs??
Here's another example of Ghost as the GOAT, The W is Ghost at his ultimate best, period:
Outside the check cashing, flashing Dipped in fashion Five cherry-faced fagots tried to cash in They keep laughing, Ghost you get ya face bashed in Who gave you these priveledges son? why you maxing? And we.. Feigning to take those move slow I´m hearing how you broke Rob´s nose And I heard you keep a banging hammer Golden brass diamonds embroideries That was stolen that you haven´t reported g Make very little noise, my shit hiccup Don´t make this big stick up bigger Me and the boys I thought for a second then chose Rather than froze Had the jim star on my hand Yo what the fuck yo! that´s when I ripped Timothy Snatch and dip john like imbaggable Had the mini axe tool, faxed him Shots rang off, bing, boggle-de-dum
compare that to this and again the difference is night and day, not saying this is bad, but if this guy is making Supreme Clientele II we need the real GFK back
When I was young my moms named me Brink Cause she knew I stay truck, shitting out grams of money that stink Brewster's Millions, my crew's brilliant, boothing eightballs Flipping peas like I was Pharrell on skateboards I would of smashed danger, but I don't date whores Get money respectfully, breaking the state laws Steal boxes of AR's and Rambo techs Last seen fleeing the bank in the Lambo stretch And my grandmother closet is fly, Carol Burnett scarfs The Bob Barker ringtone is live I'm not a lucky don, the stones in my wrist is Lucky Charms I c-lo twice, don't mean I got a lucky arm Steinbrenner of rap, everybody's getting laid off I'm in the Phillipines, like Bernie I 'Madoff' With half of my continents millions 'Catch Me If You Can' on some DiCaprio shit, laid up with two Brazilians
Again, Hollow Bones is clearly a Ghost verse, i read Respectfully and i wouldnt be surprised if Papoose, Sheek Louch, or Beanie Sigel wrote it...the UNIQUENESS is missing and needs to be brought back ASAP
Great Ghost:
Catch me in a crisp blue six, deep dish Jaws is Cris', valor stopped at the wrist Watches involved, talk to me Trick Daddy I liked the way you tilt ya hat up in that Caddy Son, can't believe you the most slept on Took a break since the Cuban, bunnies lookin' like you just repped wrong You done slipped down a bid, got caught with the hammer Steal banners, medical examiners, clocked live hammers For real, you a live bunny, rock the five in ya slippers like them other five guys in ya picture Come on, watch, I'm the star of the show, so blow dem Mothafucka, you ain't blew in three years Son of a bitch, that's why I rock the big shit Don't forget who you is, bunny, you my little shit I will crush you to pieces, stop ya heart from tickin' And you mad cuz you a older clock, couple rocks missin' And my writin', the band, you can say it's ice flight-nin' You don't like him, do you? You wanna fight him In fact, I should've put you back, relaxed on the stones And copped ya two-thousand leather shit, snow cones A bowl of milk almost killed you, ah, you almost drowned in pops I brought another box, I'ma keep it real with you And I'ma murder you if ya bitch-ass get on my nerves again
vs.
Dumbed Down Ghost typical NY sounding LOX stuff:
Yo, yo, yo I'ma tell you how we do on the Island Squeeze your girl ass, now what, knock your punk ass off balance You can't come through Mickey D's, no burger no cheese Find your head missin, do you still want the #3? +Big Mac+, large order of 9's, no shake, we got shells Pissin on y'all bitches like R. Kell's And more or less staple your balls together And light you in kerosene, melt your whole face in your sweater You see the rubber gloves, thugs Nervous doctors play in the E.R., still wind up pullin the plug Cause it's a Twin Ghost Experience, flesh and spirit We bang, even the dead listen to deadly lyrics Make Big turn in his grave, even 'Pac can hear it Cochran, on Dirt's death, yo they tryin to appeal it But fuck that, all we want is the crack, the cash in bags Come through heavy, you might get yapped; motherfucker!
and finally, this is just ludicrous
Yo my whole body like a spoiler kit draped in the latest hits Both hands two glass cutters cops'll alter this Cream of Wheat steez pushed back we in a spaceship like the Jetsons ashtray slide refreshments Automatic bubble yo, straight off the Benz Dac double Daniel unrockable fam milk the same yo Fuck you, Duel of the Iron, Tony win a Oscar Legendary rah, wicked Phantom of the Opera Blow fish the movie's over, die with a slow kiss Tongue kiss the neck and it's, mucus from a locust Stand on fly, Mel-a-chi is on standby The white Puma's go with the X I multiply yo
Dove nice Mary Jane bitches Bud Light Co-production I spoke to Christ, shoes were light Statueheads all up in my lab like mad Empty bags are lyin in the yard, welfare Dead weight yo, cables that clamp around the neck Sucrets fast Corvettes, tecs on my rest Sabotage, rap motor large, Mickey caught a charge Credit card scam, when he couldn't rock the Wu skull Fuck yeah, televise the shit on Fox Big Ghost'll grab the jim and un-fasten your box' You're allergic to the fungus on Earth, Killer Bee Headquarters is work, Khadafi body in his turf Yo, shame on, all y'all niggaz on some Baywatch shit Soundin like me, suckin my dick Pretty Tone, long live the great Cappadon Cappadon...
vs.
Yo, straight out the ghetto, I'm damn hood I Stack-A-Dollar like a whole rack of canned goods Baggy jeans, no Timbs, A.C.G. boots Living in the Crack Spot, banging at Sheek Louch The narcotics is far from garbage Whether it's cold or it's late August My shit is fresh cuz I catch the harvest My little cousin bubble Swatches and carry a couple oxes Keep a duece-deuce by his ankle and get it popping You know, we be the boys clocking the graveyard shift Big bundles, counting our CREAM, burning the lazer spliff My man, jumps out the whip with the A.R. fifth And we barred from plenty of parties cuz we start shit Parole hoes, six months in the box My little sister got her head shaved off She made it home from shop We selling cartons, Pampers, Similac formula Anything it take because the paper keep calling ya Gangstas keep balling for sure, we want more We make it rain from the tech and wop The Lex pouring and the precincts don't have enough cups for us To slow us up, they hit us with dust Then they rush, bust, my big man Ron'll break the cuffs Three-hundred pound bunny, po-po has to fuck him up They say that my projects shall undergo therapy We never voted, we voting for Oprah, Obama, and Eric B.
On Oh Donna he is just straight thinking and its coming out so naturally. But on Tony Sigel he's clearly trying to say certain things, it sounds more forced, and it sounds like he's trying too hard to rap rather than just let it flow[b]
[b]and finally
Yo, check these up top murderous Snowy in the bezzle as the cloud merges F.B.I. try and want word with this Kid who punked out bust a shot uip in the becon Catch me in the corner not speakin Crushed out heavenly, U.G. rock the sweet daddy long fox minks Chicken and brocolli, Wally's look stinky With his man straight from Raleigh Durham, he recognized Kojak I slapped him five, Masta Killa cracked his tiny form E'rybody break bread, huddle around Guzzle that, I'm about to throw a hand in your bag Since the face been revealed, game got real Radio been gassin niggaz, my imposters scream they ill I'm the inventor, '86 rhymin at the center Debut '93 LP told you to Enter Punk faggot niggaz stealin my light Crawl up in the bed with grandma, beneath the La-Z-Boy where ya hid ya knife Ghost is back, stretch Cadillacs, fruit cocktails Hit the shells at Paul's Pastry Rack Walk with me like Darthy tried to judge these plush degrees, said the cow, wrap the fees Gettin waxed all through the drive-thru Take the stand, throw my hand all on the Bible and tell lies too, I'm the ultimate splash the Wolverine Razor Sharp ring, dolomite student in role holdin it
vs.
Yo, everything platinum, even my baggage You want a platinum rock? Then go see Larry He got the yellow hat, yellow Maxes Air, looking like me With a yellow back, pretty long hair Suck a dick like the wind stepping With Bobby Brown on speed dial, his ex dial stay on the check-in I got that Mickey, baby, little mama I got the bomb, call me Tom Brady Move like a running back, 21 Tomlinson Know how to push it back, you should pay homage and Shit is too potent, make you feel like vomiting Your black/white birds can give me five like Donovan Pop the champagne for the illest hustler in the game I got the Pink Floyd eyes on all day And I ain't even mention my deals yet Cuz I don't wanna have you freaked out over this real shit
Are you kidding me Ghost??? For most rappers thats a great verse, but Ghost has been spitting that same type of shit, same flow, same character, same TYPE of lyrics for WAYY TOO LONG. On Apollo Kids Rae is dope but clearly a step down from the absolute wild shit Ghost was saying. On Rock N Roll its the complete opposite. Raekwon absolutely murders the verse and murdrs Ghost on it with his wild slang and what not, Ghost comes nice, but stale somewhat KNOWING WHAT HE'S CAPABLE OF...
and i think Ghost can go back to the style when he wants to its all about an effort thing to me...here's a more recent track with the vintage Ghost
Aiyyo, it was three white bitches who worked for Tony Starks Undercover agents, far beyond Nark's Amazed by their beauty marks Wonder Woman bracelets, knee-high boots that was made by Clarks My dick got hard on how they spoke and shit Every language was music to the kid as if I was modern day King Midas Doreen, Skye and Kelly, Starky's Angel's - Shaolin's Finest Though it happened in the streets of Brooklyn Plus I played the whip real low cause my face was lookin My Angels jetted out of Albee Square Gun out, wrap in they hair, kinda crowded so they clap in the air Chase a bunny down block for block, squeezin Glocks These mommies real anxious to blow off his top He's a rapist, murderer, convict, burglar The more they ran the more they skirts got dirtier Sendin shots like check day, Fed Ex expressway BOOM BOW BING! You heard the gunplay "Who shot the duck out the window?" Mr. Lee said "Three pay now, you fuckin weed head!" We can stop the finest suspect, he's dead Then I pulled up "Come on girls to Club Med"
the fact of the matter is Ghost needs to change something. He cant disgrace the Supreme Clientele name by not using the Supreme Clientele style. Raekwon went back to the Cuban Linx type raps for OBFCL2, i definitely dont want to hear Big Doe Rehab, Wu Massacre, Fishscale, Apollo Kids Ghost on Supreme Clientele 2 or else it would just be another Ghost album. I like all of those albums, some i like a lot to be honest but he is going to start to sound bland if he keeps running with his style. Take us back Ghost and please switch to some semblance of the style that made you a legend in the first place
Thats it.
I Really hope some people take the time to read this to understand what im saying. Casual fans dont realize it, but this has been going on too long. And after this, if people still dont see the change and the sheer step down in character and style then i have to invalidate your opinion on everything regarding GFK from now on.
Enjoy...

You're absolutely right, but Ghost still has that swag (not in the new TI sense of the word but the OG) to pull less complex/unique rhymes and make them sound fly. That's not necessarily a good thing... but he still lays down some ill shit examples - Ghostface X-Mas (my favorite Christmas song of all time lol) & Slept On Tony.

Also, however disappointing it may be, it is kind of unrealistic to expect a consistently elite level product for over a decade.

Slang you take being a fan to a whole new level. You are the ultimate stan and I bow down to you.
Anyway with that being said I did not read all the verses I just read your intro and outro. I try not to get caught up in what a rapper "use" to sound like especially if its over a 5-8 year gap between that certain style or lyricism. As long as they still are bringing it currently I could careless if there style does not match up with their 1st album that dropped 10+ yrs ago. I judge by the current and understand that things change and motivations change. Just do not get whack and too predictable.
Ghost still tells some of the wildest and most entertaining stories imo. He still raps with passion and still has his own thing going swag wise. Lyrically I never knew what the fuck Ghost be talking about half the time anyway but it sounded damn good. So I do not really focus on that currently. He's not whack or average nor very predictable so thats good enough for me.

You just said something about typical new school WC or something...so you get caught up in how people used to sound just the same.

What the fuck... I can't even entertain that shit, comparing ghostface in the 90s to ghostface now? Cmon man that was an entirely different era for hip hop.

im not talking abut the 90's...im talking late 90's and early 2000's up til around 2004 ish. The problem is its not like Ghost just lost his ability to spit that way. Its not like his voice significantly changed or he lost his flow like many rappers who are a shell of their former selves, he still has the ability to rap like he used to he just isnt, period. Big Boi sounds exactly the same as he always did...all im saying is if you're going to make Supreme Clientele II i dont want Big Doe Rehab/Fishscale/Apollo Kids style on its, because thats not what made Supreme Clientele what it is. He needs to switch it up to avoid sounding bland like he has on some tracks.

Pretty toney was ghost's least impressive album to me but it still is 4/5 wit some bangers. I don't think anything he spits is bland, with that said, i won't hesitate to say ghostface is still the best emcee and I completely disagree with everything you said.

Ghostface is the GOAT in my opinion. He is my number one emcee of all time so dont get it twisted. That said, i am the most critical of my favorites, and if you cant see the drop off in style and quality he's had then he must not truly be your GOAT. Ghostface went from 36 Chambers with one style to Ironman/Liquid Swords era with a totally different style, then went to Africa and came back with the style that defined him...the Cobra Clutch style that he used from that song on through the W, Supreme Clientele, Bulletproof Wallets, then Pretty Toney came and he started to slightly change. He's still capable of being Ghostface on songs like "Underwater", "Alex (Stolen Script)", "Angelz", etc. but yo cant tell me he doesnt sound dumbed down nowadays. Rather than abstract, its a lot more straightforward on MOST tracks, and to me that is a lot less impressive for his standards. The constant NFL metaphors, the straightforward thug shit on his new songs isn't what defines him as an MC. He sounds today like he's tryig to rap, whereas before he didnt try it just came out, thats what made it so good

The food references are the best to me lol and I haven't made top 10 list that didn't have ghost on the top... Yea he's got more filler on his albums nowadays but he still excels on most tracks

Slang, C'Mon Son!! You can't expect every single Ghostface track to be flawless. Personally, I like some of those songs that you're bitching about, and I've liked all of his albums other than Bulletproof Wallets. Even when he's not at his best he's still better than 95% of the MC's spittin today. I thought Apollo Kids was one of the best albums of 2010.

That was better than anything in the "great ghost" verse you put above it
