The lines are blurred for a lot of artists, but i agree that they became increasingly more pop.

it's not without question that Boy II Men as great as they were/are vocally is an r&b group per se'....they made after their first album more of a pop imprint/impression then say a Jodeci or a Dru Hill or a 702 or a Jade or an SWV or a Guy...I think you see where I'm at....I would say TLC (as an example) is more of a pop group as well compared to some of their peers, it's not a slight to them in the least....vocally they (Boyz II Men) killed a bunch of others and they made a bunch of bangers but IMO after that debut they were more on the pop side then they were r&b.......

| Shit the funny thing about this KJ is that you picked a bunch of their more pop oriented efforts as your favorites from them...lol
those are bangers but I'll Make Love To You can't hold a soulful candle to This Is My Heart (as an example).....IN MY OPINION!

The thing about Boyz II Men was that they were able to make R&B tracks that appealed to pop fans as well, and that's what made them great. Being managed by Mike Bivins obviously had a lot to do with that, because New Edition's later stuff had the same vibe, and of course we all know what BBD was all about.

| I agree Powell....I'll Make Love To You might be the most pop slow jam that I have ever heard that was supposed to be R&B....Babyface knew how to produce those pop slow jams.

| I'll Make Love To You was a very good r&b trk. Not seeing why it having mass appeal takes the r&b out of it. Yet, you same mofo's just got threw praising Mary J who makes a lot of the same type of songs.

IMO as great as I'll Make Love To You is as a song there is not too much "soulful" about it's sound...again this is all subjective opinion of course....again don't get it twisted, Boyz II Men are a dope, dope group but I never at least after than first album considered them an r&b group.....an extremely vocally, talented pop group?? yes but I like my r&b alot more soulful sounding again in my opinion.....

LMAO....Kev you've already admitted you weren't much of a Mary J Blige and damn my dude does it show....lol unless you mean this new Mary J Blige then Mary NEVER made pop sounding songs.....she was extremely soulful pouring her heart and soul into every song....but this 2011 Mary has tried over the last few years to expand her appeal beyond the projects....but it's vintage Mary that puts her in the top female soul singers of all-time IMO....if she was always 2011 Mary then she would have never made that list IMO

Puff Daddy behind the boards?
Yeah early Mary J really had no type of pop sounding music. You telling me early Boyz II Men songs were more pop than the above overall?

| Deep Inside is just about as bad as I'll Make Love To You. I agree Kev. The other songs you listed aren't IMO. Sweet Thing was a Rufus & Chaka Khan remake. So Mary made a pop remake? ..not sure about that one buddy | |

Yeah early Mary J really had no type of pop sounding music. You telling me early Boyz II Men songs were more pop than the above overall? well let's see Real Love (sampled The Audio Two-Top Billin')...nah...nice try though Sweet Thing-CHAKA KHAN...nuff said Reminisce-not sure what your hearing there but that sounds like R&B to me, even the remix containing CL Smooth Be Happy-again that sounds like r&b to me and kills I'll Make Love To You as a soulful sounding effort Deep Inside-she took an Elton John tune and flipped it to an r&b tune with a rock sounding twist and this effort wasn't even during her "vintage" period...this was well after it....so this maybe the best example you gave of her flipping towards the pop tip and that's because it's Elton John that was sampled and he played on it as well...

| It seems like sometimes people take unnecessary offense to the term 'pop'. R&B music, as far as I can see, was more or less first genre to get turned out. That approach to R&B fits comfortably and great R&B has been made with and without it.
Look at Stevie Wonder, Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, Ray Charles, Sam & Dave.... they all made pop music. The best ever.

| Sweet Thing is a cross over song. Is it not? Sweet Thing was a pretty popular song on the black r&b circuit back then. Or have you guys forgot when its obvious r&b artist are making an crossover attempt. I'm not necessarily saying Mary J was pop. I'm saying for Powell to even call early BIIMen pop and then turn around and say Mary J was str8 r&b is very odd to me.

| Exactly Powell...I am not sure how r&b tracks that sampled hip hop artists could be pop...but that's just me...Reminsce sampled MC Lyte's "Stop, Look & Listen....Real Love sampled Top Billin' and yeah Diddy may have co-produced Be Happy but that's not pop. | |

Yeah well Powell, and anybody else who's reading this for that matter. Consider this... Boyz II Men is the NUMBER ONE SELLING R&B GROUP OF ALL TIME! That's right, NUMBER ONE! Now that's not to say that they're the #1 group of all time because I don't have them at that spot, but the fact that they've sold more records than any other group in history SPEAKS VOLUMES about their greatness. Therefore, them being Top 10 on my list (or anyone else's for that matter) shouldn't be looked upon as a crazy opinion, even if you disagree with it. OH and BTW, I'd take Boyz II Men EASILY over the bolded groups, a few others too but especially the bolded ones.

I mean I could name more r&b groups that I have ahead and some waaay ahead of Boyz II Men, I'm only saying this because KJ just called them a top ten r&b group of all-time...hey that's his opinion but I completely disagree 1000%......
they might be top 50 but top 10?? HELL TO THE NAW!
I don't care how many albums Boyz II Men have sold that is not part of my criteria for establishing greatness here, I'm talking about overall sound and talent...vocally though Boyz II Men are top notch there is no question about that but IN MY OPINION Boyz II Men is not fuckin with The S.O.S. Band, DeBarge, Chic, The Time, Loose Ends, or Shalamar in any way, shape or form on an artistic level IN MY OPINION...honestly I even have GUY ahead of Boyz II Men, Jodeci and Slave as well, because I like the way the groups "sound" better than Boyz II Men...but I respect your opinion on them, but in my opinion they are nowhere near a top 10 r&b group of all-time....top 50 or maybe even top 40 is where they would slide in on my list

I have them ahead of Guy too but not by much. If they're only Top 40-50 to you, that's fine. The point I'm trying to make is that them being Top 10 to me shouldn't be looked upon as a crazy opinion considering all the records they sold. Their vocal talent and the ability to branch out to lots of different audiences are the reasons why they sold so many records.

| Oh hell naw, they are in no way better than Jodeci. Boyz II Men harmonize better than Jodeci, but that is it. K-Ci and Jojo are both better than Nate, Shawn, and Wanya(but it's close with Wanya). I would take Jodeci's/K-Ci & Jojo's discog over BIIM easily as well. | |

| I'm not saying they're wack by any stretch, I personally am not a big fan of them, I'm just saying record sales shouldn't have to do with how highly they're acclaimed. | |

| I agree Terry. Obviously, Cooleyhighharmony is the highlight but overall II didn't do it for me. You can play Jodeci's 1st 3 any day and K Ci & Jo Jo have a nice discog as well. Obviously both groups made better slow jams than uptempo songs for the most part, but I would give Jodeci/K Ci & Jo Jo the nod over Boyz II Men | |

I can respect that opinion but I disagree with it. I didn't like The Show, The After Party, The Motel all that much. But I'd take II over Forever My Lady, and CooleyHighHarmony over Diary Of A Mad Band. All 4 are classics though, and I thought Evolution was a slept on gem. As for the technical stuff. K-Ci and Jo-Jo are dope singers, but Devante and Dalvin drag them down a bit. All 4 members of Boyz II Men are excellent singers. Also, I think those that like Jodeci better is because of their more adult content in their tracks, which is cool at because I'm a fan of theirs as well but I just think BIIM had more overall bangers.

You missed the point. Neither Hammer nor VI are the best selling rapper of all time. Boyz II Men are the best selling R&B group of all time. Now while sales don't always equal greatness, if you're the TOP SELLING GROUP in a genre that's been thriving longer than most and features tons of legends, then that speaks volumes. And they're selling to all types of people. If you're not a fan of theirs it's whatever, but they're the best selling group for a reason.

| Where would Boyz II Men be w/o Michael Bivins and New Edition?
These guys are a legend group, easily one of my favorites of all time.
