| Here's my annual poker post. If you've turned on ESPN2 in the past couple of days after like 9pm, you've seen that this year's Main Event is being broadcast live. If you're interested in picking up some tips and seeing how some of the top players think, I highly reccommend tuning in. Pros that have been knocked out have been commentating and giving their insights and reads the whole time. | |

| My uncle is the manager or a huge poker room in Southern Florida. When I stayed with him a few years ago he got me hooked on watching it on tv. People seem to get annoyed real quick when I'm running the remote... | |

| Phil Ivey actually didn't play this year. You can thank the government shutting down online poker for that.
"My uncle is the manager or a huge poker room in Southern Florida."
Doesn't Florida state law say that making bets over like $3 is illegal? I know it used to be that way a few years ago

| They cracked down on the overseas poker sites. The 3 main ones (Full Tilt Poker, Aboslute Poker/Ultimate Bet, and Pokerstars) got their sites and accounts frozen, and the guys in charge got arrested or something. Ivey got a ton of sponser money from Full Tilt, and boycotted the Main Event (possibly the WSOP all together, I forgot) because of it.
Phil Hellmuth thinks that online poker will be legalized sometime in the next year. He also said he expects 15,000+ players in next year's Main Event if it does become legal

Do you know why online poker is illegal? I mean there are security issues and whatnot but is there a specific thing about it that is wrong?

| It's illegal because of taxes. Or, a lack of taxes.
As far as Florida, they definitely bet more than $3. The casinos are pretty much always in litigation with the state to open up the regulations. It's the only way they can stay competitive with the Native American spots like Hard Rock (unregulated, for the most part)

| Ah, perhaps I'm thinking of Georgia, then.
"It's illegal because of taxes. Or, a lack of taxes. "
Indeed. Just like everything else that is illegal. The government can't profit, so they might as well shut it down.
