Danny Brown - XXX Danny-brown-xxx

This is another one of those releases that is seeming to get a lot of hype from non-hip hop blogs and e-zines, so going into this (this the first album I've heard from Danny Brown) I was quite skeptical. I was expecting a gimmicky rapper with style but no substance, as that seems to be the key to hype nowadays. I was pleasantly surprised. What you'll notice right away when listening to this is Brown's voice. It's very strange (well, it was to me at least), but it is unique. I haven't heard another MC that sounds like this guy. What's even more impressive though is that right when I started getting used to his strange voice and flow he totally switched it up. He seriously sounded like a completely different rapper halfway through the album. Another thing that I like about Brown as an MC is that he can really do some crazy shit on the mic. This is a rapper that can actually rap. He switches up flows all the time and he never sounds quite the same from track to track.

As far as the subject matter of the album goes, the cover does a great job of summarizing everything on this album. First of all XXX represents Brown's age (30 just in case you didn't see that), and some of the tracks in the second half of the album discuss his journey to 30, growing up in Detroit and struggling to get by. It also represents some of the subject matter of these tracks, as they can get pretty pornographic from time to time ("I Will" for example). The XXX on the cover is on top of a pill, representing this guy's struggle with drugs such as weed and Adderall. Some of the tracks on the album are parodies of mainstream hip hop, such as "Radio Song" and "Lie4". "Lie4" seems like a huge shot at Soulja Boy, who Brown mimics with his flow to great effect. The beat also sounds like a typical Soulja Boy beat. There are a lot of backhanded shots at popular rappers, but he also names names like Waka Flocka for example.

The production on this album is great. There's so much variety in the beats - some sound like one step away from techno, others are just straight up boom bap tracks, and others sound like 4 or 5 genres of music shoved into a blender. Most of the beats are by producers I've never heard before. Danny Brown doesn't throw a lot of guests onto this album either (there's only 2). This really is just Brown showcasing his skills and providing a look into his past without any fanfare or excess. This is dope if you ask me. And oh yeah, the album is free. This is at least 4 stars for me.
