Schoolboy Q - Setbacks Schoolboy-Q-Setbacks-Cover

I didn't realize until this album that Jay Rock, Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q and Ab-Soul are the 4 members in the group Black Hippy. I'm assuming they will be dropping an album as a group soon and I think I'll be checking it out when it drops. Each member brings different skills to the table. Kendrick Lamar seems to be the jack of all trades guy, very versatile. Jay Rock is that "gangsta" dude with a rougher voice and typically harder lyrics. Ab-Soul seems to be that weird, off-the-wall dude. And Schoolboy Q is that weed-smoking chill guy. This album isn't as good as Lamar's debut but it's pretty much on par with Jay Rock's (I haven't heard Ab-Soul's album yet). These guys all seem to get nice production on their stuff, and this is no exception. Schoolboy Q brings energy to his performance although he doesn't have a very unique voice or style. My main problem with this album is the more-mainstream oriented tracks that sound a bit too over the top. Also, as I mentioned he's the "weed guy", and kinda sounds like a knock-off Curren$y or a more lyrical Wiz Khalifa. Also, some of these choruses are quite repetitive, like on iBETIGOTSUMWEED ("I bet I got some weed/I bet I got some weed/I bet I got some weed/who got some weed/who got some weed/who got some weed"). Still, this is an album worth checking out if you want to hear music from some younger dudes with potential making a name for themselves in 2011. 3.5 stars for me though.

This was not for me... I won't even bother rating it. Simply not my kind of music.
