"Time to stop making other people money, time to start making Dre some ends" -Dr. Dre, 1992

This is one quote, of many, that was going through my mind while thinking about this. As most of you know, I'm a long time hip hop fan, 100% east coast head, mad love for the west, big ups to the south and midwest (and other places I may have left off, lol), favorite artist, currently and of all time, is Nas, you know the deal! I've been thinking about this for quite some time now and I wanted to actually get some legit opinions on this matter. I'm wanting to become a DJ in some form. I already have a name and a LOT of ideas in place (respectively, I won't disclose them here, because I do feel that this is something that's never been done, and being that the game, DJ and mixtape wise, is a little oversaturated, I do know that what I have planned will bring something fresh to the table). I don't want this to be just another side hustle. Not only do I want to get paid obviously, but I may want to start my own production company of sorts you know. Do any of you know how to get my foot in the store, how to start things, would I be able to use CDs and/or Vinyl, etc? ANY advice or recommendations you have will be appreciated!

When you get your equipment try doing spots for friends and family and then they can put you on for other folks. Clubs need DJs. I used to assist a DJ. One of my all time favorite gigs.

Honestly man, the way you are averse and close minded to certain music I don't see you having much success in the actual club scene. If you are just interested in doing mixtapes, and producing, and odd niche stuff then you could have a future. Equipment is really a personal choice to what youwant to do and how. Serrato Scratch is a nice compromise between digital and vinyl - but requires a turntable and mixer.

You hit the nail right on the head with this one. Definitely interested in doing mixtapes, producing, etc.

Working the club scene and indie spots will give you an outlet to sell said mixtapes.

Would there be an issue if I were to start behind the scenes first before I do anything in public?

If you want attention you have to be seen, somehow, some way. You can't sell a product no one knows about. You're the product. The only way working behind the scenes will work is if you have legit connect. Got one? Also keep in my mind by doing that you're giving up some of your power. You're asking someone else to put you on. The question is will it be a manner you agree with. Will they take your one neptune-esque track and promote setting the tone how people will perceive or will they snag your primo-esque. They will push the one they believe will generate the most buzz for paying customers. You will be sold, but the question is will you be selling yourself?

I hear what you're saying on this one.
