Top 5 IMO. Kill it Jeffrey...Pun is a top 25 of all-time talent IMO...so I agree with your praises of Pun but when comparing Capital Punishment to Mecca And The Soul Brother or even The Main Ingredient...well IMO there really is NO comparison and the main reason for that is Pete....he did some of his best work on those two albums....it's the same thing with the Gangstarr albums...I have Pun as an emcee ahead of Guru but those Gangstarr albums are better than Capital Punishment IMO and the reason there is clear as well and his name is Premier....production can make most albums better than others even if the lyrics are tight...which probably explains why Canibus won't be making an appearance for me on this top 50 of all-time from the east.....

I think the production on this album is outstanding. And while your point is valid and I gotta respect you for delivering it with dignity and respect, I disagree. But that's why we do these polls, right? That said, has there ever been a song by Pun with Primo behind the boars? He's worked with some great producers (JuJuj, Havoc, etc) but I can't think of anything with Primo. |

| I was just keepin it real Shaw. The West didn't start to blow up until the late 80's, and the South didn't do so until the mid-90's. Therefore the East is the deepest.
It's funny that when someone else digs a certain sound/style the most, it's ok. But when I do it I'm biased or narrow-minded. That's some hypocritical double standard bullshit. |

But, saying Pun could make other regions top 50, but the east is too deep is just utter disrespect, why even type it, if you didn't want to get a rise out of non easties. Keeping it real ignorant is what you're doing, I could name 100 albums from the west that I think are "classics" that you never even knew existed.

The East is the deepest not because I like it the best (although I do), but because they've been around the longest and have a headstart on every other region. And I deleted it Shaw. |

| Well, KJ - just because they have been in the game longer does not necessarily make them the deepest in terms of quality albums or even overall albums. So the logic does not hold. |

| You also have to admit that you've heard way more from the east also, which isn't giving the other regions as much of a chance in your eyes. I know I can admit that for myself. | |

I disagree with that Pedro. In the early 80's there were already a ton of consensus hip-hop classics from the East Coast. So by the time the West and South developed classics, the East was already ahead of them AND still producing just as many classics. And Shaw, I have several albums from other coasts in my Top 100, but as we know we all have favorites. |

| There is no such thing as a consensus classic. There is a classic to you. A classic to many. But no consensus. The east has not been relevant on the same level it used to be and producing classics like it used to for near 15 years now. You are implying that is not enough time for other coasts to catch up?
You have not heard anywhere near as many albums as me or other people from other regions, you are not well equipped to speak on that. Given the rate the West and South produce albums compared to the east they are on level playing grounds. The West ruled the game for years and crafted more universally loved albums during that time, just as the south has done this decade.
Things are quite even to the unbiased observer. |

Things are quite even to the unbiased observer. A consensus classic is one that the vast majority of hip-hop nation considers a classic. Personal classics are all relative. As far as the East not being relevant as far as producing classics, that's false. There have been a number of classics produced by the East even this decade. The 2000's as a whole hasn't produced as many classics as they used to, but that's another subject. I've heard far more albums than you think I have. The West ruled for a short period of time in the early 90's but even then the East was producing classics, and around 1994 or so the East began to rule once again. It's just that the landscape of the rap game expanded with the West and South. I disagree about the West producing more universally loved albums in the early 90's, I'd say it was about even. As for the South this decade, well this has also been considered by many (not just me) to be the weakest decade in hip-hop history due to the decline in quality of mainstream hip-hop. |

| KJ, these are just facts here.
These "consensus" albums you talk about sold very poorly compared to wider loved albums by other people.
Are you seriously proposing that Illmatic is more of a consensus classic when it took it so long to go platinum, compared to albums from Bone, Pac, Snoop, etc. that were selling millions? If anything those albums have much more right to call themselves "consensus" classics that these other albums.
May Guru Rest In Peace - but you have 4 consensus classics for Gangstarr and they did not go gold until Moment of Truth in 1998. |

May Guru Rest In Peace - but you have 4 consensus classics for Gangstarr and they did not go gold until Moment of Truth in 1998. Illmatic is a consensus classic because it's universally loved by just about every hip-hop fan that's ever heard it, same goes for most of the GangStarr albums. And sales are irrelevant. Please Hammer Don't Hurt Em sold more than any album by Pac (other than his greatest hits LP), Bone, or Snoop and it's considered by most to be a 3-3.5 star album at best. |

| OK, almost everyone who has heard Z-Ro - Look What You Did To Me has told me they consider it classic.
It is now a consensus classic.
And no one calls anything by Hammer classic - but they do those other rappers... many more than have ever said Illmatic is classic. |
