Maybe It Takes A Nation Of Millions because they bought that political and conscious rap to the mainstream like no other grp did before or after them imo. After PE came out you started seeing a new look in the way black youth dressed and looked at themselves.

Straight Outta Compton, Chronic, It Takes A Nation Of Millions, Enter The 36 Chambers, and Marshall Mathers LP are all valid choices IMO.

Only Built For Cuban Linx '95 - Very important album. Sets the tone for all other mafioso albums from that point onward.

And Jeff, MMLP is the best Midwestern album IMO, but no way in hell is it the most important album of all time.

Run-D.M.C-Run-D.M.C (1984) wins this EASILY
Hey fellas the question was what is the most IMPORTANT hip-hop album to ever come out....not the most bangin one or your personal favorite but the most IMPORTANT hip-hop album to ever come out
Run-D.M.C.'s debut let everyone know that hip-hop was here to stay and not just some fad music created by the ghetto black and hispanic kids from the South Bronx to keep them out of jail or have something to do....because before this album this is what "mainstream" society thought about hip-hop music
This album was the first to gain play on MTV (when they still played music videos and were the trendsetters in the game) "Rockbox" was in regular DAYTIME rotation which was unheard of at the time...this album made Run-Dee and Jay the first hip-hop act to appear on the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine, this album made them the first hip-hop group to appear on American Bandstand as well...this album moved hip-hop from the true "old school" on into what would be considered the "new school".....it cleared a path for the new torch bearers of the music...LL Cool J....Whodini...Salt-N-Pepa....N.W.A....Schoolly D....Just-Ice...BDP.....Ice-T.....Stetsasonic....MC Lyte.....The Fat Boys....Heavy D and The Boyz, and many many others
YOUR favorite emcee TODAY owes a bunch of thank you cards to Run,Dee and Jay for giving them that career opportunity that they have...real talk!
this album wins EASILY man....those albums you guys mentioned owe a debt of THANKS to this one!

I feel you on that selection Powell. The reason I chose Raising Hell though is because even though their debut laid the groundwork, Raising Hell skyrocketed hip-hop into the mainstream.

that debut was HUGE man
thats when they started printing Run-D.M.C. posters man...lol..real talk....Dj Eddie F who dj'ed for Heavy D had two big Run-D.M.C. posters in his room...that group and that debut is what showed heads that this could be done man!

Thats true Terry but again this "larger scale" started with their debut...which in essence makes it the most important hip-hop album of all-time EASILY
that debut is what enabled them to even imagine what larger scale meant man...it made a bunch of artists start thinking about "larger scale"....lol

Raising Hell was when Run D.M.C. had white approval. Their debut is greater in every aspect. I'd say the debut is more important.

It goes beyond the "white approval". After Raising Hell, hip-hop became a global phenomeonon. Many MC's and groups blew up following that album.
As for which album is greater, that's really debatable. Personally I prefer Raising Hell, but they're on par with each other in terms of quality. But Raising Hell is far more important as it solidified hip-hop as a respected genre rather than just a passing fad.

How KJ did Raising Hell show that hip-hop wasn't a passing fad when their debut had already proven that?? by 1986 hip-hop was already in full bloom man....it's acceptance was already global....Raising Hell just helped to make it's awareness even larger but it didn't make it possible...their debut made this happen...by 1986 hip-hop was already appearing in commercials....Raising Hell helped to make "others" know about hip-hop but all of this was made possible by their debut my dude...do your homework on this shit you'll see what I mean man

keep in mind that this was a GLOBAL concert man and this was in the summer of 1985..about a year before Raising Hell!

Powell, while Run-DMC's debut was critically acclaimed, Raising Hell brought NEW fans to hip-hop that weren't there before. The fact that RH made it's awareness greater makes it a more important album. I HAVE done my homework dude. I lived in that era as well. It was great.
Run DMC's debut is like Michael Jackson's Off The Wall, but Raising Hell is like Thriller. Know what I mean??

LOL...Hell NAW KJ...that was a HORRIBLE comparison man...lol
you need to do some research and admit you fucked up....because your completely WRONG man
I just showed you footage before Raising Hell dropped that contained a BUNCH of "other" folks in the crowd at a GLOBAL concert man...again I'm comparing the QUALITY of the albums I'm saying which one was more important than the other and their debut is winning this debate going AWAAAAAAY....without the success of that album a bunch of heads would have NOT had a career including Run-D.M.C.
LL Cool J was out before Raising Hell...Whodini was out before Raising Hell...The Fat Boys were out before Raising Hell...Heavy D dropped just before Raising Hell....Schoolly D was before Raising Hell...I mean if you can't see this then "Your Blind and you can't see you need to wear some glasses like D.M.C."...lol real talk my dude!

and what I meant was I'm NOT comparing the QUALITY of both albums just which one is more important between the two of them!
The debut wins easily man!

First of all, how is that a HORRIBLE comparison?? Off The Wall is a consensus classic album, and widely considered MJ's second best solo album. It's just that Thriller is objectively the best album of all time, just as Raising Hell can be objectively considered the best rap album of all time. It's not number one on my list, but I wouldn't argue with anyone saying that it was. Their debut was great, and did open doors for a lot of people, but Raising Hell opened even more doors. It did for hip-hop what Super Bowl 3 did for football.
Just because their debut dropped first doesn't mean it's a more important album. Yeah, those guys you mentioned did drop before Raising Hell, but following Raising Hell MC's like Rakim, KRS-One, NWA, Beastie Boys, MC Lyte, Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap, DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, EPMD, and many more dropped.
In life, when you've outdone yourself THAT's considered your crown moment. Run-DMC outdid themselves with Raising Hell. Before 1986, there were hip-hop fans but afterwards MILLIONS MORE people became hip-hop fans, and the reason for that is Raising Hell.

I see Wayne's point. While Raising Hell is the clear cut choice to me, there are others that one can make a case for like Run DMC's debut, Straight Outta Compton, It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back, and Paid In Full among others.

I actually don't thats why I asked him to show me his list...those albums you mentioned are the most important hip-hop album for certain genre's of rap...Like Nations would be the most important IMO for the political side of hip-hop...but we are talking about for hip-hop as whole I'm assuming according to Terry's question...he didn't say break it down by different styles..he was talking about rap as a whole
when referring to it that way then I don't see as many choices....where's the list Wayne???

I gotta say I'm with powell on this. Run DMC was pretty well established (as was hip hop) by 86. I don't think 36 Chambers is a horrible pick, either, though. It had a lot of impact as far as empowering the artists in the financial/business aspect.
A few things I want to point out: 1) Sugar Hill Gang hit up American Bandstand in 81.
2) Walk This Way put Run DMC on the cover of Rolling Stone.
3) Once again, nobody is "wrong" in this discussion (except the jerk-off that didn't know these three things).

Not sure about the most important album, but as far as the most important song you would have to throw in Blowfly's Rap Dirty, it says in Wiki that it's from 1965, but I didn't think it was quite that old, If it was I don't see why others didn't run with it until the late 70's.

Anybody heard this one?, I was trying to find the 1965 version of Rap Dirty on Youtube, couldn't find it, but the "experts" there said that version wasn't "rap" and that after rap hit in '79 he re-recorded it in 1980 making it a rap song. They claim this is the first rap on vinyl, I hadn't heard this one.

And Wu-Tang Enter The 36 Chambers is a GREAT pick when your talking about the aspects of hip-hop you just mentioned in the financial/business arenas
but the question said what is the MOST important hip-hop album to hip-hop meaning the OVERALL most important album to ever come out...
that Wu-Tang album is very important but it dropped in 1993, and by then hip-hop was OVERestablished....it was already global..it was no longer a secret but if you read the question and UNDERSTOOD it then you should have already seen this huh Leonard??
I think you use crack man.....leave those drugs alone
KJ and Terry had a respectable pick with Raising Hell and myself and Halfy had another respectable pick with Run-D.M.C.'s debut
J.Harris said Grandmaster Flash's "The Message" which was also very important to hip-hop but the problem with that one is Flash didn't really EXPAND the music enough when that dropped.....it was still in fad status after that came out and that didn't change until Run-D.M.C.'s debut dropped...that's when the floodgates OPENED....that's when people starting seeing this music as VIABLE and the artists started seeing this music as a possible career opportunity....
DO YOUR HOMEWORK LEONARD......ya dumb dick...lol

While its all fun and games to clown and speculate on moms and wives, let's not cloud the one established truth. You have proven, again and again this week alone, that you are indeed an ignorant, stupid sonuvabitch.
Now, tell me; if that's a FACT, am I lying?
