Powell...
You're really showing your ass here with either
a) how much you claim to listen to/like newer shit
or
b) knowing that you do like newer shit, but upon looking at the FACTS, you realize you'd have to give the last 10 years more credit than you do.
So admit you stopped listening 15 years ago and you're not nearly as qualified as the expert as you'd like us to believe or give the newer generation more credit.

It is definitely a weak year, but you're not helping yourself by picking weak albums. The New Danger? The Beautiful Struggle? We gotta diversify your portfolio.

I'd hate to start disagreeing with you again Jeff but I have too competely with this statement....but again in your opinion 03 to the present is the strongest years in hip-hop history so I understand why you just said what you did...but in my opinion jeff the last 10 years of hip-hop music OVERALL have been trash man.....2009 was the strongest year over those last 10 and a bunch of heat was released last year but it still wasn't enough to save the last decade....it's not about giving the newer generation more credit...it's never been about generations for me....I love hip-hop music and culture and if the last 10 years were more banging than any other period in it's history then I'm bobbin my head and showing it some love...plain and simple my dude....if it was that strong then it gets its proper respect from me...I love hip-hop..so let's keep the fire going strong...but the fire has diied down a long time ago man...it's not dead...but it's decreased in it's power.....I wish this wasn't the case but for me and a bunch of others but sadly it is the case, now I know,
you like the newer shit more..I know you think the music has evolved for the better.....I know you think that hip-hop is still the global respected force that it was before...but IMO what hip-hop has become is something that anyone thinks they can do....anyone can go on a computer and think they can make beats like Preemo or Pete Rock...anyone thinks they can use their thesaurus or dictionary and be Rakim or Canibus...the fan base wants to be the artist now....so soon everybody in the crowd will be "rockin" the mic...lol
As I said before too many hands have touched it and ruined it...made it un pure...made it dirty...basically fucked it up....this is the problem now IMO.....the last 10 years OVERALL have been fuckin horrible man....disgusting and a disgrace....some gems have risen out of the ashes but overall it's been a disappointment IMO....I really wish I could say it hasn't!

And to Powell, while I agree with most of the things you've said above, it's not hard to find 5 dope albums from any given year. And 2009 isn't even close to the best year of this decade. In fact, I thought it was one of the weakest.

Maybe you like 09 better because you had this forum to introduce you to more new albums, so your listening simply went deeper than earlier in the decade.

I have reviewed it several times. Not one consensus classic and maybe 2 albums at best that even flirt with classic status.
I'd say 2002 and 2006 were pretty good years for hip-hop. No year from this decade is fuckin with either golden age, but I'd say those two were above average, especially 06.

nah I've been on the forum (going back to amazon) since '07...so I've been taking rec's on a regular basis and buying a whole bunch of shit from all of the years of the 00's...but '09 was the year that stands to me as the best year since the 90's in terms of quality hip-hop music again IN MY OPINION!

I like Illogic, but Ghost has much much more energy in his flow and he's more a "street poet" than Illogic, so he probably comes off as less pretentious.

Look, GFK has a more animated delivery, but his lyrics aren't fucking with Logic's, period. And, Logic's flow>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

No, Illogic has that early Talib Kweli/Ras Kass thing where he jams way too many syllables together in a line, and completely fucks up his flow. It's pretty mediocre.

Jason...really? You realize 90% of his lines are punches/ad libs and that's the way he structures his lyrics. This is not a mistake. Go peep some of his older stuff or mixtapes where he's laying verses with only one vocal line recorded and you'll notice that he can rap "normally" as good as anybody else. I find what he does extremely creative and obviously takes a lot of time. Aesop Rock used to rap like this as well, but has since changed his style (I wouldn't necessarily use the word "progressed", but whatever).
