What Is Your Race?

Trying to improve the forum so I want to get a gauge on our demographics and how we can get more... of different races up in here.

With Indian do you mean American Indian or East Indian, or West Indian?

There should be a Pacific Islander category and a multi-racial/multi-ethnic one as well. You should also change Arab to Middle Eastern/North African. Because Iranians/Persians are not Arabs.

I guess I could expand on the indians, but I didn't think we had either variety... the multi racial category tells me nothing, so I would ask people to chose who they relate to the most. Pacific islanders are asians.

Pacific Islanders are a unique cultural group. It's why some census tests create a separate category altogether.

An African is a generic term. Do you mean Sub-Saharan Africans only or are you including North Africans as well. And where do multi-racial Africans fit like the Cape Coloureds?

The way racial dynamics are viewed in America is different from how they are view in some place like Brazil.

And when you say Black does that also Negritos, and Australian Aboriginies who are called Black?

They look the part. We're not trying to make this a science.

Hence I suggested the Middle Eastern category which encompasses a broader range of Middle Eastern people. For example Kurds are neither Arab or Persian.

Has anyone else noticed that on any newer application that asks about race, it has two questions: 1) Are you hispanic? 2) What is your race?

Then, none of the options for the 2nd question are hispanic! I was told by someone in the know that I am supposed to check that I'm white...but also answer yes to the hispanic question...Why?????????

Because, historically speaking, Hispanics are a 'mixed bag'. Black, Native American, and European are the most common influences. Think about Spaniards...they're every bit as white as Italians.

That said, I'm not sure why that would need to be known.

On most applications/tests I put other which in a sense is humiliating. I can technically put Hispanic or Black but I don't quite fit in either. How hard is it for them to make a West Indian column because I sure as hell am not putting East Indian.

So Cise is west indian. Eastern European women have that squawky accent, which I find hot sometimes, sometimes just annoying. They are also big freaks. Hence their own category. If anyone really fits in a race not listed and wants that category added just let me know.

Black (African)
White (Europe, Canada, Russia, etc etc.)
Hispanic
Asian
Middle Eastern

in the Military.. i have to check "white"..and then "hispanic" when it comes to filling out forms n such...I was offended to have no other primary option besides white(no beef shaun) and took it to the higher ups..they pretty much patted me on the back, told me it was "nothing" and sent me on my way

Actually there are over 20 according to geneticists if you examine x and y haplogroups. If there were only five then what are Australoid people? They don't fit into any of the five mentioned groups.

Most of what we consider race is a social construct.

Just was going through an application for UCF and I had the following choices: Black, Hispanic, White, Asian/Pacific Islander, and American Indian/Alaskan Native. It was pretty much a crap-shoot but I put down Black. Really wish the bastards would put Other or Multi-Ethnic. I hate being forced to choose something that truly doesn't represent me.
