| I know no one buys rap mag's anymore really but thinking back they were a big part of my hip hop experience. They use to be something I looked forward to monthly and I would grab 2-3 at a time. I still buy them very rarely but it depnds on the time and place and who's on the cover and what topics they are covering.

| For my formative years, it was easily The Source. | |

| I would say the Source pre Benzino. I wanna say Reginald Dennis was the one running the Source before that. XXL, while decent, has been too pro Shady since Eminem decided to stop dissing them. So I will go with The Source overall. Good post Kev. | |

| I honestly did not think anyone would pick Word Up!...lol.
I will say Source also pre Benzino but XXL is not far behind it with Murder Dog coming in a close 3rd. The Source use to be so damn bias but entertaining and XXL kinda of was more open to other sounds and artist. But I agree with Highsmith that XXL was on Shady/Aftermath/GUnit dick too much.
Murder Dog use to kill me with how they flip the script on rating albums. They would overrate all the gangsta/hardcore music than downplay all the other types of music. Basically the opposite of what The Source did.

| The Lox is a popular group, everybody knows them. Jay Electronica has an article about him in the newest Playboy w/ the 8 Mile chick on the cover for fuck sake. Both of them are popular artists. | |

| The Source (pre-Benzino) was the leading, best and most informative hip-hop magazine by far IMO
XXL is number two, up until about 2002
and Word UP! is the pioneer in hip-hop magazines and used to have the dopest posters inside....

| Hey when you 1st got the mag's what section did you usually turn to first?
I use to go str8 to the album ratings and skim them for that hidden gem. If it wasn't that I would go str8 to the main article or reason I got the mag.

| The Source was my favorite magazine back in the days, it had everything I wanted to know. it helped me a lot, being here in Italy, because no Italian magazine was coverin' Hip Hop like The Source did. I also read Rap Pages, but it was way inferior. I quit buying The Source in 2002/2003 circa, when it gave underground rap less coverage and substantially sold its ass out. | |

| The Source (bought this more than anything else but did notice the bias) XXL (good competition) Vibe (honestly it was the mainstream Black Music mag more so than Hip-Hop) Word Up (a bunch as a smurf) Murder Dog (only a few issues, it too has definite bias)
Anybody ever hit up Ozone?

I use to go str8 to the album ratings and skim them for that hidden gem. If it wasn't that I would go str8 to the main article or reason I got the mag. Yep, it was the album ratings. Back in da day before the internet these Mags were the only place to get a review of an album. Although not perfect anything 3and a half mics was a go in my book. We all know the best albums got 3/2 mics. If its an artist I really like I wouldn't even bother checking for the rating. Also anybody remember that comic they printed in the Source? No not that one piece comic they'd print on the last but there was another one called Baby Blue or Blu Baby or some shit like that. They pretty much sucked and Source got rid of it after like 5 issues. Wasn't fuckin' wit The Coast
