| Today's nominee shatters all genre labels, but i'm quite sure he's well loved and respected by most people here. He's one of my all time favorite artists ever. Today's nominee is Prince. | |

| I don't see The Gold Experience represented too well here. It is his most underrated work. I recommend his fans here to give it a listen. Tracks like Gold, Endorphinmachine, Shy, Most Beautiful Girl, I Hate U, Dolphin, and even P Control would be included among his best tracks IMO. | |

Yeah, you can't list everything. One of the main reasons I like Prince more than MJ is because his albums play better as a whole. It's not a knock on MJ but his albums feel like a hits collection. With greats like them, these are the things that separate them IMO.

Off The Wall, Thriller, and Bad were like a murderers row lineup of dope songs (except for Liberian Girl on the latter album). I like Prince, but kinda lost interest in him when he became "The Artist".

| shit KJ Liberian Girl was dope too man, the beat (which of course was sampled for MC Lyte-Keep On, Keepin' On) and MJ's singing on that one were classic IMO.....
As far as the Prince/Michael debate, I have Mike above Prince by just a little bit, but these 2 IN MY OPINION were the 2 greatest music artists of all-time and easily too, I really wish they would have had an opportunity to have recorded an entire album's worth of music together...now that would have been monumental....
My breakdown on these 2 artists is as follows:
Singing:Mike wins IMO.....I think he was the better overall singer than Prince, although Prince was no joke either.....
Dancing: both were great dancers and both bit a bunch of steps from the late, great James Brown, but I would give the dancing to Mike too by just a little bit...
Songwriting ability: PUSH, both have written so many timeless gems that they just cancel each other out on that one IMO
Stronger albums: again a PUSH IMO, they both have made albums that just beat the shit out of everyone else who ever tried this music thang, from Thriller to Purple Rain, to Off The Wall to Around The World In A Day, I mean these 2 guys are leading the pack...
Ability to play instruments: well this is the one area where Prince is just slaying MJ, because I think Mike only messed around with the keyboard ever so slightly while Prince can play EVERY single instrument ever created and he's one the GOAT guitar players of all-time....soooo!
Production ablity: I'm going to give this to Prince too, because while MJ produced a fair share of his music a lot of his hits were co-produced by Quincy Jones which is not a bad look if your going to get help on an album, but Prince especially his earlier works and even his later stuff was done mainly by just himself
Live Shows: again this is a PUSH to me, both of these artists gave a live concert for the ages, and left many concert goers speechless, they were influenced by a bunch of the same heads that emphasized having a ridiculous stage show like James Brown, Jackie Wilson, Kool And The Gang, Stevie Wonder, Jimi Hendrix, and many, many others just too name a few, so they learned from the best of the best and each one of them added their own flair and made themselves into some of the best to ever do it live and maybe the best to ever do it live IMO.....
2 mic's, 2 stages, 2 LEGENDS, 2 dudes that just made a bunch of timeless music....they were both the GOATS easily IMO! Terry ya should have saved 'em both for last man....lol

| Mike is my GOAT, I've got Prince in the Top 20 but both are great I agree.
As for saving them for last, what for? We're gonna go through HUNDREDS of artists so we may as well get through the heavy hitters first, and R&B's history is a lot longer than hip-hop's is so there's a ton of heavy hitters to be mentioned. Personally, Mike would have been among the first guys mentioned if I were running the thread, but it's all good.

The thing of it is, with R&B's history you never know when we're gonna get to the last. It could be years provided this forum stays around that long, LOL. As for where Prince ranks exactly, I'll have to think about it but here's some artists/groups whom I bump more than Prince, not necessarily in order except for the top 3. Michael Jackson Stevie Wonder Earth, Wind, and Fire The Temptations Mary J Blige New Edition Marvin Gaye Mariah Carey Sade Janet Jackson Luther Vandross Boyz II Men The Gap Band Keep in mind, this isn't to say that all these artists are more talented than Prince but I simply bump their music more.

I'm trying to be as well rounded as possible. I don't want this topic to be front loaded or back loaded. My intention is to only do one giant of the genre a week. Jodeci and MJB are great in their own right, but week 1 was anchored by Stevie and week 2 by Prince.

| He's better than Mike in almost every way. He's a better vocalist. He's a better song writer, he's a better producer. He's a better musician. I guess MJ's the better dancer, but that's kinda obvious, right? Stevie has the best album between the two, and don't even get me started on their overall catalogs. Stevie's "classic period" will never be matched by anyone not even MJ. The Jackson 5 was cute and they had some timeless hits, but MJ's bread was buttered with Bad and Thriller for the most part. I would take Songs In The Key of Life over Thriller and Innervisions over Bad. And we aren't even mentioning Talking Book, Hotter Than July, Music Of My Mind, Fullfillingness' First Finale, My Cherie Amour, Where I'm Coming From, For Once In My Life, or Signed, Sealed, and Delivered. It's a wrap from my point of view. | |

| I have no problem with anybody saying that Stevie is better than Mike. I like Mike better personally but Stevie is 2nd on my list. If there's any other male solo artist in R&B history that can match Mike as far as bangers go, it's definitely Stevie.
Both are better than Prince easily IMO.
Oh, and Terry...

Funny to me how you forgot about both Off The Wall and Dangerous both of which when added to BAD and Thriller and his Jackson 5 and Jacksons material stand up to all of Stevie's works IMO...and I love and respect Stevie as an artist too...he's in my top 5...but IN MY OPINION he is not better than Mike sorry mane!

| I'm not forgetting about either of them. They both belong in any conversation about MJ, but they are both slightly lesser works than Thriller and Bad IMO. That's still just 4 albums that can't compete with what Stevie did. If you were to literally list every last one if Stevie's hits and classic albums, there would be a gap wider than the Grand Canyon between Stevie and everyone else. I think Marvin Gaye is a far more accurate counterpart for MJ than Stevie is. | |

I disagree...I think Mike stands right there toe to toe with Stevie and surpasses him when taking into account his entire catalog of incredibleness right next to Stevie....Marvin is in the convo too but he too falls short of MJ's greatness IN MY OPINION.... Stevie has made some incredible sounds mane but so has MJ and Marvin too for that matter...this is why I love this thread mane....r&b artists and comparisons are tough man.....

I'd take Off The Wall over Bad 10 times out of 10 personally. Both are classics, but I think OTW has more 5 star tracks overall. As for the Mike vs Stevie debate. Stevie has a much larger discog, but if you throw in Mike's work with the Jackson 5 then he easily matches (if not overtakes) Stevie. I love Marvin Gaye, he's in my Top 10 but he's not seeing Mike.

I'm just not seeing it. Bad has Smooth Criminal, Man In The Mirror, Dirty Diana, Leave Me Alone, The Way You Make Me Feel, I Just Can't Stop Loving You, and Bad. The other tracks are no slouches either. I just can't see more than seven 5 star songs on OTW.

Don't Stop Til' You Get Enough Workin' Day And Night Off The Wall She's Out Of My Life I Can't Help It Rock With You Get On The Floor Burn This Disco Out
I count 9 (five star joints) and there's only 10 tracks on the damn disc....this shit is built like Illmatic man...lol...Mike killed both efforts (BAD and Off The Wall) further cementing his genius....

I count 9 (five star joints) and there's only 10 tracks on the damn disc....this shit is built like Illmatic man...lol...Mike killed both efforts (BAD and Off The Wall) further cementing his genius....
REAL TALK!! All of those are 5 star tracks IMO. OTW was arguably Thriller BEFORE Thriller. Bad was a dope album, but I usually skip Liberian Girl and occasionally skip Speed Demon. I don't skip anything on OTW.

| Those are not all 5 star tracks, and if they are so is Just Good Friends and Another Part Of Me.

both of them are dope by the way.... No, i'm not. You could literally go through and do the same for Innervisions, Songs In The Key Of Life as well. Also, i think Liberian Girl is 5 stars, but that's far from a common opinion.

| yeah it's 8 my bad
Liberian Girl is 5 stars too....
My top 20 r&b acts of all-time IN MY OPINION are:
1. Michael Jackson/The Jackson 5 2. Prince 3. Stevie Wonder 4. Earth, Wind And Fire 5. Chaka Khan 6. The Isley Brothers 7. New Edition 8. Sade 9. Mary J. Blige 10. Marvin Gaye 11. Guy 12. Shalamar 13. Loose Ends 14. S.O.S. Band 15.The Gap Band 16. Anita Baker 17. Luther Vandross 18. Jodeci 19. Chic 20. R.Kelly
and it's in order for me too, and it doesn't necessarily mean that the order is done by who is the most talented (although I do think MJ and Prince have the most talent of everyone listed) but it's by whom I have bumped the most in my life and by the type of sound that I'm feeling the most.....probably needed to list about 100 because as I review this list I see a bunch that I'm feeling that I want to list as well..lol, but they would fit into the next choices below these elite 20 for me.....

| Here's who I got...
1. Michael Jackson 2. Stevie Wonder 3. Earth Wind & Fire 4. Mary J Blige 5. The Temptations 6. New Edition 7. Marvin Gaye 8. Sade 9. Mariah Carey 10. The Gap Band 11. Boyz II Men 12. Janet Jackson 13. Luther Vandross 14. Prince 15. The Isley Brothers 16. R. Kelly 17. Guy 18. Whitney Houston 19. Rick James 20. En Vogue
Like Kev said, I know I'm missing people as well but I'm comfortable with this list for now.
This isn't a list of who I feel the most talented are, it's just simply my favorites. Just like my Hip-Hop Top 20, it's subject to change except for the top 3-4 spots.
