Well, I'm certainly closing out the year by checking out some material I should've been up on a long time ago (for me, 2012 will be "the year of music"), and as far as the underground goes, I succeeded in that regard (plus I still have more to check out and buy).

Now, I know who DJ Quik is, obviously, and based on most of the production I've heard from him, he is quite underrated for someone who has been in the game so long. And here's the surprising part, to me that is, lol, I haven't heard any of Quik's album, none of them, and after hearing some of the positive feedback about "The Book of David", I'm anxious to check out his albums and I can already see myself adding him to my collection. Lay it on me, lol! Recommendations, album(s) I should start with, etc. I'm ready!

Ok cool on the early recommendations and rankings. And how was the album he did with Kurupt?

That album as a whole is average. But the songs that are good are damn good. I think its just too short and Kurupt lyrically is on the downside. Could be he is not use to rapping over Quik type beats but he rarely seems comfortable on some of them. Its worth checking out for the beats alone. Imo some of Quiks freshest and best production is on that album.

...and Wayne I love the last 2 on Kev's list so Trauma must be pretty good. That's the only album that I haven't heard on Kev's list.....

Trauma is good but i'm not going to say its better than Unda The Influence flat out. I just prefer it a tad more. I go back and forth with those two. Trauma is Quiks most guest heavy album but it worked. It was tight to hear different rappers over his production. None of his albums are weak to me but something has to be last...lol.

Quik Is The Name
Way 2 Fonky
Rhythm-Al-ism
Safe+Sound
Book Of David
Trauma
Unda Tha Influence
Balance And Options

This is basically my rankings except take "Trauma" and "Book Of David" and move them to the bottom. Personally, the guests on "Trauma" killed the album for me. I just spun "Book Of David" for the first time and am not impressed after the first listen.

Lol..its funny because I felt the same way on my first spin. Something was different or was not clicking. But trust me with more spins it will hit you. Quik switched up his production style on this album which is a good thing. I look at it like the difference I heard from Southernplaya to ATLiens. Quik kinda stepped out his beat comfort zone on this album for some beats.

I haven't heard Trauma but it's hard for me to see Balance & Options & Under The Influence at the bottom of the list......Thanks Alan

I played Unda Tha Influence last week. I hadn't heard it in a while and have been playing Book Of David regularly. So it was fresh on my mind. I had to move Unda Tha Influence back up some. That album is too dope. Its interchangeable with Trauma spot.

Book Of David is a fuckin BANGER, I see it as no worse than his 5th best album.

Like I said something has to be at the bottom but in Quik's discog case that is still a good spot. Every album cannot be a tie but just because one is at the bottom does not take anything away from it quality wise. Just means you either prefer others above it or they were better. I luv all of Quik albums.

Just giving my opinion. I liked Book Of David immediately. It's one of my favs of 2011. Trauma is my least favorite Quik album.

Ok, I know it's been a while, but here's what happening with me and the Quik albums.

The only ones I'm going to add to my collection are "Quik Is The Name", "Way 2 Fonky", "Book Of David", and the album with Kurupt.

I know some of you are going to say, "damn Wayne, you're leaving out some of his best work", lol. Well, that may be the case, but I'm being honest on this one, like always. The albums in the middle, well, I can say the production is nice, however, I simply couldn't get into them like the other four. Granted, I like a lengthy album, but I feel the length of some of those albums (Under Tha Influence & Balance & Options) played a role here also.

Well at least you tried. Can't expect everyone to like every album they hear. You picked some real ones to add to your collection. That one w/ Kurupt is dope but too short and lacking in the Kurupt dept.

What is wrong with Safe & Sound and Rhythm-Al-Ism?

Nothing is wrong with Safe & Sound. I know it came out in 95, one of my favorite years, but I just couldn't get into like I thought I would. Rhythm-Al-Ism didn't impress me too much outside of the production.

Top 3 producer to me after RZA and DJ Premier and probably the most musically inclined that I can think of

Safe & Sound is my favorite album. Rhythmalism has his best production and Balance & Options is the most underrated.

Quik Is The Name is classic

Trauma was his only album I wasn't feeling much. It's due for another spin
