| Its here people, now i know some o ya'll couldnt give a flying kick bout this shit. But just put yoself in my shoes, this country is going BANANANANAS. Man i cant remember a time o my life when i felt this proud to be South African, but enough o that tip, the real reason why i started this thread:
just thought a simple lil ''pick your team to win'' game would suffice, winner gets a digital high five or something, ill try my best to keep the thread updated with results an what not. two or three people can pick the same team, forming there own team...
participation in the thread isnt neccessarily vital, but if EVERYONE could just take two secs to type a team out , id be happy as a pig in shit!
As for my pick, im going with Argentina, only cos im watching two o their games really.. African side to make the semis. Dark horse: Chile

| Not to be rude, but I think you underestimate how much U.S. Americans don't care about soccer. I don't even know which countries do/don't have teams. | |

I literally laughed out oud on that one. It's fucking hilarious because it's so goddamn true. Does Beckham play for us now or still Britainia? |

| My country is Holland and will always be that way. While I'm not sure we have what it takes to win it all (no Van Der Sar and a woeful D) my blood will be oranje whenever football is to be played. Ordered our last jersey recently and I will sure standout when I hit up the local spots to watch.
I will watch every last game possibly over and over. When it comes to the WC I am in my elements. I love learning about new countries and hearing their national anthems and whatnot. Might sound corny but that's the way I am.
If it weren't for this this summer would really be a bummer.
Its really a shame most Americans don't appreciate this game outside of those with a foreign background but its to be expected.

| damn you guys are some haters. i try to watch every game religiously, the World Cup is easily the best sporting event in the world, and 90% of the world agrees with this except our country. Its a month long extravaganza encompassing the national teams of the most popular sport in the world with multiple games everyday, what is there not to like? | |

We have too many options man, great ones at that: the NFL, NBA, NCAA Football..hell even college hoops and MLB..our national sport is NOT soccer...

| @ Slang: Yeah dude the NFL/NBA playoffs ain't even sniffing the importance of this tournament. This literally brings the world together for a month. I guess you have to have some culture to respect this game which the majority of Americans don't have. | |

Those events happen every year and this happens every 4 years. Like Cise said, this tournaments importance globally is unmatched. i follow soccer during the season but its hard to watch the games without paying extra to get the added stations, but the cup is at least accessible for everyone to see

| In high school I used to be on top of every soccer match cross-league but in recent years I've only been able to follow the EPL/CL matches. Just ordered cable for the first time in over a decade (I'm a cheap bastard) just so I can DVR and watch all these matches. Thank the lawd that I don't need a special channel to watch these games. | |

Get out of my head! lol Anyway, I'm rooting for Brazil. I wish Jamaica or T&T were more of a powerhouse, though. *sigh* Mexico plays the home team in 2 days, don't they? RSA might put in work. lol

awesome to see such support from some o you guys, i get that its not a national sport for ya'll.. i do understand this fact.. slang i couldnt of put it any better, even if its not your cup of tea, the spectacle itself is extraordinary. like for instance i dont enjoy american football, i think its a game for sissies, i do however stay up till four in the morn every year just to catch the superbowl..
man SA are playing SO WELL, i just hope they dont cock it all up and throw it all away. but in my heart of hearts i know we cant perform on the same level skills wise, but they always say a crowd can be the thirteenth man so heres hoping.
Mexico is gonna be a real toughie to start off with, especially with the group we in.. i really hope we kick your ass SRP.. really, i do.. gonna be watching that shit at a hotel with a Brazillian beach setup, beer tents, and projector screens. YA BABY!!
Norf i used to love watching trinadad play ball, Yorke was one o my fav players a few years back .

ONLY ONE MORE DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nah those boots cost be $60 plus tax. It was quite an excellent deal and I am sure to stand out on the pitch. Yeah we are usually dark horses but always seem to get derailed by infighting/crumbling. Its really sad that we haven't won a WC to this day as we've produced some of the finest talents in the history of the game. Eventually we'll get it right. As for Trinidad I enjoy watching them play last WC and was cheering them on. Interestingly enough my cousin (distant) used to play for them: Arnold Dwarika.

| Guy is the ultimate homer but I can't knock his spirit. Ghana has a few quality players but it won't be enough as their captain (Essien) is out of the WC. They are a fun team to watch but they are in the real group of death (Serbia is quality and the Aussies ain't half bad). I don't see Ghana even making it out of their group. | |

Also we have to beat Brasil to get to the semis which I'm not so sure we can navigate.

| Not a chance in hell that they do it and I DO NOT want to play them again. They knocked us out of 2 of the 3 past tournaments and no matter how shite they appear we will find a way to lose to them. I really can't stress that I'd rather play anyone else but them even if we have to go through Brasil. But I think its time revenge is dealt as a good ass-kicking is long overdue. | |

| ok, se here is my weekend report of watching two games live and the rest on my new HDTV!
South Africa vs Mexico - Friends House - Kick Off: cant remember.
started the day with a celebratory braai at the work here. NO ONE WORKED on friday, no one, and if they were at work like we were, they were drinking and decorating their cars. three cases of beer between 6 okes, , , gone.. next, drive back home and get ready for the day. the roads are littered with fans parading with their flags and horns. Brilliant. buy case of brandy and coca cola, arrive at friends house were there are about thirty of us, all friends. he had a projector screen up outside by the pool . game starts, a lil bit suspect the first twenty minutes, but then, oh did we start playing football, our way. we score........... my Goodness did this country erupt!! you could here the vuvuzelas from 5km's away... the jubilation. the celebration. WOW, i still get goosebumps now just thinking about it... mexico deserved to score, i have no beef with that, so all in all a fantastic result for us!!! a team nearly fifty places higher than us in the world ranking, and we held our own. Grandtastic. full time comes, case of beer between two of us, gone... arrive at bar for post game celebrations... i cant remember the rest unfortunately,,, all i have as memories is a bank slip telling me i had spent all my salary, and was now broke... anyways...
Argentina vs Nigeria - Joburg - Ellis Park - Kick Off: 16:00
Getting in: 5 stars, easily, from start to finish. everything was so well organised, i did not stand in ONE queue the whole day.. arrived at the park and ride facility at around 12 am, parked, got onto a taxi mini bus, arrived at the stadium in under ten minutes. the roads have been closed off for about a 5 km radius around the stadiums . police are EVERYWHERE, so traffic rolls so smoothly in and out the stadium. scanned my ticket at the turn stile and BOOM!!! suddenly you're greeted by 40 000 ecstatic fans.
In: AMAZING,, fan shops, dancers, traditional music bands, stages with competitions and DJ's. more than enough food stalls so no queues form. only thing i was a bit saddened by is the fact that they only sell Budweiser, horrible beer. I think you guys also have it? they cost R30 for a 435ml bottle, whereas in a pub youre charged no more than R15 for a beer. I realised this before i went there, i dont mind the over charge, just the lack of variety.
The Game: ABSOLUTELY EXTRAORDINARY!! six rows up from the half way line, i saw Maradona from about 20 metres away.. the stadium and pitch inside is of World Class,,, ample seating space, great acoustics (Especially for blowing my Vuvezela) and all in all a fantastic vibe.. couldnt have asked for anything more. to see Messi controlling the ball like he has fly tape on his boots was just marvelous.. we sat right next to the argentine collective, who were all blowing their vuvuzelas and dancing with us locals, such friendliness and commradery.
Out: again, smooth as silk, walk out the stadium, hop onto a bus. arrive at your car (which is still safe as houses) jump in, directed all the way outa town by Metro police, and 20 mins later i was at my girlfriends dad's place watching England vs America (GREEAT RESULT GUYS!!!!!) while having a braai and drinking again!!
to be continued,, goota sell some bullbars so i can afford to catch my game coming up this weekend, ARGENTINA AGAIN BABY!!

| Cameroon flopped but don't sleep on Paraguay. They fared pretty well in qualifications and aren't to be taken lightly. | |

| The soft spots won't be tested until the quarterfinals. We would play Brasil and Germany would play Argentina (assuming things before pan out). | |

| I love your spirit. If you love the color orange I'd crown you as a Dutch fan immediately. ^_^
I'm very worried about facing Brasil as they have seemed to have our number in the past.
