very rough order
MCs:1. Ghostface Killah - To me he's not the same emcee he used to be today, but n his prime he is the epitome of an MC to me. He had slang, told stories, used words and phrases that took you weeks to figure out, and had the freshest most ludicrous lines ever and the wild voice to go along with it. From about 96-2002 i dont think anyone could touch Ghost -- no one ever did what he did nor will anyone be able to duplicate what he did in that time period.
2. Slick Rick - The Ruler, has probably the dopest voice in hip hop, i can basically listen to him over any beat, his voice comes in and anyone else on the track doesnt matter...Rick's presence and swagger on a song alone outshines everyone else
3. Kool G Rap - The lisp, rapid fire flow, crazy stories, and hardcore rhymes, its hard to touch G Rap from a technical standpoint
4. Nas - Nasty Nas in his prime was unfuckwittable. Nowadays he's not what he was but in the 90's and still today he'll drop lines most mc's cant touch
5. Raekwon - This is a new addition to my top 5. At one point i considered him my 4th or 5th favorite in Wu Tang, but he crafted my favorite album of all time and what he did the last 4 years solidified him in this position.
6. Eminem - Like some of the above, Eminem isnt what he used to be. Honestly today's Eminem i dont even really like, but in his prime he made some of my favorite songs of all time and has the talent to back this position.
7. Prodigy - P is the definition of raw. His voice, metaphors, and street lyrics was the definition of Queens and NY rap that spawned millions of copycats. There's a reason he is one of the most sampled voices ever.
8. 2Pac - raw emotion laid over tracks. Not many could keep it as real as Pac could.
9. Gza - the eldest member of the Wu and considered by many to be the best lyricist. Has a strong discog and there's not much to not to like about the man with the pyroclastic flow
10. MF Doom - Doom has 1 "not so good" album in his entire catalog. He absolutely dominated the early part of the 2000's and his voice is unmistakeable. If people took the time to actually listen to and decipher what Doom said they would realize he is more street than 90% of their favorite so-called "gangster rappers". Doom's production is some of the dopest and he never sold out. He is an underground and hip hop legend that will be recognized in 15 years more than people realize today.
11. Kool Keith - Straight raw and in many ways the creator of the "Stream of Conscience" type of rap. Keith's flow is unconventional and his voice is not for everyone, but he has at least 2 classics and adapted from the 80's to 90's almost flawlessly and expanded his fanbase with his multitude of personas.
12. Ras Kass - The Lyricist. Ras is simply one of the best lyricists of all time. If he never tried to appeal to the commercial audience he would be higher on everyone's lists. He can come at you politically, hit you with the social commentary, hit you with punchlines, and murder almost anyone on wax
13. Rakim - The God...so much influence on everyone, released 6 straight dope albums in a row and a 7th which is pretty good. Not many could do that and his lyrics will be remembered forever.
14. Scarface - Like Pac, he's one of the realeast MC's out there. He defined southern hip hop and his voice and presence is unmistakeable, Scarface comes on a track and others need to bow down
15. Andre 3000 - One half member of Outkast who has one of the best discogs in rap. Andre on "Aquemini" is one of the best mic performances on an album period. He'll flow fast, slow it doesnt matter and there's not much he cant do. If he would get back to rapping he would definitely still be the same rapper he used to be.
16. Tech N9ne - Raps the midwest to the fullest. One of the best flows in rap period, and has some of the realest lyrics out there. Gets personal without being
, and will literally rap circles around people.
17. Canibus - ahhh Canibus. One of the best lyricists on earth but sometimes gets too out there with his lyrics. In his prime in thelate 90s-early 2000s he destroyed everyone on every guest appearance he made. I would be scared to be on the same track as him back then, and to me one of the best rappers of all time during that period.
18. Big L - considered by many to be a one-trick pony, but he's one of the best storytellers i've ever heard. He only has a limited amount of material but he never wasted a verse. L is one of the most ra and uncut rapprs ever, never censored himself and never afraid to say anything. There's a reason so many people continue to talk about him today.
T19. Brotha Lynch Hung - Siccest flow, one of the best to ever do it, period...has multiple classics, was the focal point of the Sacramento siccness scene, and will always have the shocking subject matter.
T19. Bizzy Bone - Bizzy is the standout member of Bone Thugs. Krayzie may be some people's favorites and Layzie may be the "glue" of the group, but its Bizzy who stands out on tracks. With his high pitched voice and one of the fastest flows in history, when he comes on the track you have to rewind it. I dont like all of his albums but when he's on hes simply one of the best. He changed his style to something fresh on every Bone album and still managed to standout as the best.
20. Sean Price - this is a personal pick, but Sean P simply kills every track. There's not many rappers who make me laugh out loud and he's one of them, for that quality alone he gets a boost. Nocturnal and his 2 solos are all excellent albums. He has also been one of the most consistent and sought after underground emcees of the last decade.
