Who cares, Primo is better with other people and Guru should just fall off the face of the earth. Granted together they have dope albums, but I'd rather see Royce or really anybody else take his monotone monosyllabic ass out of the picture entirely.

Hey Jeff, to quote Ed Lover.....C'Mon Son!!! Get the fuck outta here with that ignorant bullshit!!!!

I want Gangstarr back together, as do most of their fans.

Primo works with the majority of the industry anyway, even when he was working with Guru. The two of them have made multiple classics and are one of the most consistently dope groups in history.

Until Royce Da 5'9'' releases a classic album, he ain't on Guru's level IMO.

if they do this they have to do it big, i would almost want them to do a "Gang Starr Foundation" album rather than a Gang Starr album, and just get Guru, Big Shug, Jeru, Group Home, and MOP on all the tracks....throw in Blaq Poet and the NYG's for good measure and you have a banging album

That's just plain ignorant KJ. seriously, Royce would rip Guru to shreds in a heartbeat. Also, you're failing to state the obvious. Guru has released classics cause he's been rapping over Premier beats. Royce has not had that luxury. You don't belive me? Maybe you should ask Jeru and Group Home if they miss Premier's midas touch.

That being said, who doesn't want another Gangstarr album? It will be dope stuff

1) Royce has released classic material IMO, and even if he hasn't, he hasn't had Primo to work with ON EVERY TRACK ON EVERY ALBUM FOR A DECADE HAS HE

2) Name a classic Guru album, not a gang starr.

When Guru rhymes more than two syllables in more than two bars in a one verse or changes the pitch of his voice and doesn't sound like he just took 7 shots of Nyquil while drinking vodka and abusing Codeine, he's not on Souljah Boi's level, IMO.

Ignorant my ass. Royce being better than Guru is debatable. What isn't debatable though is that Royce has ZERO classic albums under his belt, and GangStarr has arguably up to 4 classics.

You're right, Guru did release those classics because of Primo. Which is WHY I wanna see Gangstarr back together. If Street Hop becomes a classic, it'll ALSO be because of Primo. I hope they do get back together. Primo has stated in the past that Guru can holla at him whenever he wants to work together again so I pray this rumor is true. They are one of the greatest groups in history.

I always thought Guru was kind of wack. The reason he was able to get by was because of the beats backing him. Guru has a monotone voice and his lyrics are nothing special. But when you put that over top of a DJ Premier beat it works very well. But lets say you give Guru the beats from some of Royce's older work and see what Guru is able to do with mediocre beats. I dont think people would be quit so impressed. Even when you look at his Jazzmatazz series, if you were to read the lyrics its nothing special. Most of his verse are not even 16 bars. The big reason why i have enjoyed those is i love jazz mixed with hip hop. Guru has been able to come off dope because of the beats he uses. To me hes like The Game they have both got by on average lyrics paired with beats that work well with their style. Take away the beats and you take away any critical acclaim

"If Street Hop becomes a classic, it'll ALSO be because of Primo."

You want to tell me how. Primo did what 3 beats and they where nothing special. Definitely not the quality beats that Guru rapped over. Now his Primo did the whole album i could see where your coming from.

The ignorance in your comments are plain as day. You are comparing Guru's discog to Royce's, but you were not accounting for Premier's presence. As N3R0 has laready said, without Premier Guru is a bum. Royce has come closer to reaching classic status than Guru has when it comes to solo albums. Bar for bar, Royce would demolish Guru, and that is not debatable. Anyone with two ears can hear it. Ususally i try not to say things so definitively, but the gap between Royce and Guru is so wide even Evil Keinevil wouldn't try to jump it on his motorcycle. Also, Royce has shown he has amazing chemistry with Premier. You know as well as i do that Guru, Jeru, and Group Home have done next to nothing without Premier so comparing Guru albums with Premier to Royce albums without is unfair and ignorant.

I'm not saying that anybody rapping over an album full of Primo beats isn't something to be amped about, what I'm saying is that when Primo is working on Gang Starr the black Ben Stein gets all of his good beats and we're deprived of shit he could be doing.

And Slang, that's exactly what I'm saying. Take Guru off those songs and maybe they woulda charted.

Y'all can say what y'all want about Guru, but the fact of the matter is Gangstarr is one of the greatest groups of all time and Guru was dope enough to be part of those classics. Whether or not Royce can release a classic STILL remains to be seen.

I like Guru personally. He's not a lyricist on the level of Rakim or Nas, but his flow and delivery are dope. If he was wack, he wouldn't have been part of 4 classics REGARDLESS of who's producing him. I can understand a wack MC possibly making one classic due to dope production, but four?? Hell naw.

Not many rap acts nowadays are a threat to make classics every time out, Gangstarr is ONE of those acts. Hence, I wanna see them back together.

Kool John, Im a big Gangstarr fan and listen to their work all the time. Its great and most of us feel that way. I have them as a group in my top 10 groups of all time. I also have Livin Proof in my top 25 albums of all time. Both Group Home and Gangstarr have something that rates high for me personaly but in both cases i can honselty say i the rapping is a weak point. Its because of they way the were able to get great beats to make great chemisty that both the groups made classic albums. Give Royce 16 dope Primo beats and see what happens.

You guys are acting like Royce is Big Daddy Kane or Rakim...he ain't that good..lol

is he better than Guru?? well if he is it ain't by that much....Guru does need Preemo to make classics..but alot of emcees need that man (no homo)..he could've changed alot of careers including Royce's...

I most defintely want to hear some brand new Gangstarr for Preemo just as much as Guru...those two together are an all-time match-up, plain and simple!

Guru is a washed up crackhead, and while Primo is still good for a few beats, I doubt he could produce a great album from front to back nowadays. So, even if they were back together, it wouldn't be like before.

It's probably just Guru and "super producer" Solar though, not the real Gang Starr.

Exactly the point. I was fighting the fact that KJ seems to be hating on Royce for no reason. He was never given classic production. Guru needs it, hes weaker then most but every classic album needs great production

I'd give Guru's Jazzmatazz (vol. 1) at least 4.5 stars...if not the full 5. It is a personal classic. I own 3 of the Jazzmatazz and like them all. Guru has a lot to do with the sound of these albums and the way he works over it. I agree Premo helped out the classic rating of Gang Starr albums, but Guru was always fuckin' dope IMO.

I'd listen to Guru over Royce any day...

Weak spots? For myself, I can only think of one or two. Otherwise, the album is pretty much skip-free to me. Easily one of my favorites of 2003 as well.

You're reading my mind Slang...cosign again. Premo can't do it by himself. No way would Gang Starr have released so many classics if you just replaced Guru with some other emcee. It was a classic pairing. That's why they had such a dope run.

Umm Jason go listen to Silver Jews and SHUT THE FUCK UP man...when we need an opinion on Gift Of Slab Bacon then we will be sure to ask for your input, otherwise keep it to yourself...lol...thanks man!

You too much of moron to come up with new stupid shit to say when you disagree with me? Actually respond or shut the fuck up, I don't need to read your pointless bitching again.

Well, your comment was retarded.

"Guru is a washed up crackhead"

^ Retarded comment

"...and while Primo is still good for a few beats, I doubt he could produce a great album from front to back nowadays."

^ It's your opinion, but it still sounds like BS to me...

Guru has dropped a series of increasingly crappy albums, I don't see how it's a stretch to call him washed up, and when is the last time Primo had more than a few beats on a great album? Almost a decade? When he has done more than that, the results have been spotty at best.

Guru has dropped some duds, but I personally feel he has a near classic, and 2 good albums on the solo tip (one in 2007). Either way, that does not equate to being a "washed up crackhead"....which was the dumb part of your statement IMO.

Premo's work on "The Ownerz" (2003) is flawless IMO. So that's why I'm happy for another Gang Starr album. Because this is a classic pairing and Premo has never sounded better under any rapper IMO.

The Owenerz was the weakest Gang Starr album to me, with the exception of their debut. The crackhead part was a joke, because of his latest auto-tune effort, and his hyperbole about Solar.

Capture is in my top 5-10 Preemo beats of all time... Playtawin may be, too. Who Got Guns is dope as fuck, also.

You left out the "crackhead" part...which is the primary reason why your comment is retarded.

Nice dodge, though... lol

The weakest? I can see you saying that, but with a all-star lineup of albums like Gang Starr has, it's not really saying much. IMO, there is no Gang Starr album under 4.5 stars. Premo brought the heat on that one, and I've always felt Guru really stepped up his game lyrically on it...possibly his best set skill-wise. You should really check it again...

I don't know, I think Guru drastically falls off without Premo, but like Slang said...Premo makes those beats specifically for Guru (paraphrase)...because that's what great producers do. So, of course he sounds better over Premo beats. Royalty, Above The Clouds, DWYCK, Mass Appeal, Take It Personal and so on...those are all tailor made tracks that I simply can't see anyone else rocking over.

That said, Guru did do his thing on the first couple Jazzamatazz albums, so he's not completely hamstrung without Premo either.

Ownerz was the first album Gang Starr album where Primo's production took a step back, and since then it's been even more clear to me that he's past his prime.

So what the hell did Premo record around 2003 that was better? That's easily his best work since the last Gang Starr album in 1998, album-wise. Are you not much of a fan of Gang Starr to begin with? I don't see how any Gang Starr fan would give "The Ownerz" under 4 stars...seems criminal.

BS...he's not fucking God.

The fact is that Premier has produced classics for others. Guru has not released a classic without Premier. I know you consider Vol. 3 a classic, but in the grand scheme of things, it's not fucking with The Sun Rises In The East or Livin Proof for that matter. Another point people seem to be over looking is that Royce has a history and chemistry with Premier. Why could Royce not release a classic with nothing but Premier beats? Guru was always average to me, and it's not like he's turning back the clock any time soon. Royce is at the top of his game.

LOL! I agree. I think The Ownerz is tremendously underrated. It's at least 4 stars to me. Guru didn't really hurt the album, but Premier's beats were the star of the show more than any other Gangstarr album

He didn't record anything better around 2003, the step back was from Moment of Truth. I think of the Gang Starr albums from the 90s are great, so I have trouble liking their music.
