No opinion on this one., but i remember Powell giving this dude a lot of credit a few days ago. So i need to check out some his material. Where's the best place to start?

"The Album" (1985)

Top 100 for me. Kurtis Mantronik is one of hip-hop's most underrated producers. Him and MC Tee had excellent chemistry.

You make comments like this to piss off Powell. You obviously don't have a clue. If Kurtis Mantronik now makes electronica music, that does not mean Mantronix (Kurtis Mantronik + MC Tee) ever did. And Just-Ice's debut was certainly worlds aways from "techno".

Mantronix has one classic album and they were a HUGE influence on today's producers (Timbaland, specifically) BUT their period of actively making music just isn't comparable to other mc's on this list.

I know damn well that if a faggot like SRP is voting here he's a lying vagina...

He just uses whatever ammo he's got against a person if they disagree with him. It's not like I say "What do you know about Tech N9ne, Powell, you're not from the midwest

Cory, I was being semi-serious, you have every right to say that. But it was still funny.

Why act so defensive? Who said you voted for Biggie? I was making a point that Biggie got in with 2 albums, and Mantronix had 5. You said they didn't record enough albums for a vote...

I'm not really acting defensive?

I see your point, I was just defending my stance. It's also hard for any primarily instrumental artist/group to get in here. Dj Shadow is dope, but he wouldn't stand a chance.

Cory you have a bunch of respect and love for "old" school artists and have proven this time and time again

SRP on the other hand has only proven that he loves Seagram and Mac Dre, amongst a very few..

I know you have a decent amount of knowledge about "old" school artists unlike either N3RO or SRP

I agree, but Kurtis Mantronik is just the producer of the duo, which includes MC Tee (1985-1988), or Bryce Luvah (1990-1991). He has also done other work, but I believe the poll is for Mantronix the duo.

N3RO your knowledge on the "old" school is limited man...this is a fact...not bullshit my dude...your the same guy who disrespected Run-D.M.C. one of the greatest groups/duos of all-time...the "Beatles" of hip-hop culture

you have limited knowledge and not much respect for the "old" school...it's all good man, do you!

I don't really see anything special about Mantronix from the trks I heard but I think they are kinda like 2 Live Crew with being originators of a certain sound and vibe. But 2 Live did not make it so f**k Mantronix... :finger: J/K...but I voted neither.

for me, it takes someone special in the game to get it...melle mel got top 50 for me because of his remarkable impact....some dudes like mantronix, who were never great, and arent even around today and had very little longevity dont make it.

KJ, you missed my point...

Nero said "Mantronix's period of actively making music just isn't comparable to other mc's on this list.", which is untrue because they have 5 albums. However, Biggie only has 2 albums, and he made the list. So really, quantity of material has nothing to do with it. In fact, Mantronix had a very good run.

Hoenstly Pounds Mantronix is not that known and may only get luv from older cats out of NY, I listen to a lot of rap and even I never heard of them until you mentioned them on the forum awhile back. I really don't see their impact and their music just was not all that to me.

Well, they get love from a MN cat too. lol

Mantronix was never on the mainstream tip to begin with from the articles/reviews I've read on them. Plus, just listening to their music, it's obvious they aren't going for a blockbuster formula. They did bring a very indy feel to their music even at the time. So I realize not many have heard of them. However, I do think Kurtis was indeed a groundbreaking producer. His sound was cleaner than clean and he was creating a different sound than most producers at the time. He went on to influence more pop/dance/electro artists as a producer.

Yeah but Kev, you even admitted that when you where coming up you didn't have access to a bunch of music and no cable t.v. and this played a part in you not knowing about Mantronix...

you see the thing about him that made him so dope was he was doing his own shit and working with others as well...the original freelance producer so to speak....if you've heard any of those beats on Just-Ice's "Back To The Old School" then you would know dude is straight FIRE...especially for the era man....he did the damn thang, I'm not saying he's the most known dude but neither is K-Rino and you want him on the list right??

those who voted neither on him just don't know his work plain and simple..

Steve does not really know about Mantronix..let's be honest

samething with SRP..well SRP doesn't know much about anything outside of Mac Dre and Seagram...so why he's voting here is beyond me....

the heads voting neither don't know...which I expected when his name was brought up...no surprise here

I don't know Powell. I don't see many heads around here give it up too many things (if any) electro influenced. So maybe people just hear that sound and write them off.

I mean, here's a quote from Norf's "The Album" review on Amazon:

"I've been listening to hip hop since I was 7 years old (thanks to my dad) and I haven't really heard a better dance album since this one came out."

DANCE record. Shit, this was a dance record in a big way, but it was also hip-hop.

One more Norf snippet:

"If you throw "Bassline" on at any 80's party, the people will lose their minds."

LOL - damn right...one of my favorite hip-hop cuts of all time.

Sorry to bite Norf...I agree! lol

Hoenstly Pounds Mantronix is not that known and may only get luv from older cats out of NY, I listen to a lot of rap and even I never heard of them until you mentioned them on the forum awhile back. I really don't see their impact and their music just was not all that to me.

True but a close friend of mine use to buy records all the time and would let me watch Rap City at his crib almost daily and I do not remember them like that on the show or him having their records (which does not really mean anything just saying). I have no problem with the way you and Pounds feel about this grp they just were nothing great to me. I will check out more from them and it may change my mind later and i'm sure they would get luv at a old school dance party with the right type crowd.

Funny thing about Matronix... I was at some local record shop I just found and picked up "The Incredible Sound Machine" for $1.99.

...boy does that album suck.

But, I don't think I can put Matronix in the top 100. "The Album" and "Music Madness" are great albums, "In Full Effect" and "This Should Move Ya" are 3.5 stars at best, IMO, and the other one is garbage. As Powell would say, I can think of 20+ groups I would put in front of Matronix.

Oh, by the way, if they have any other albums that are at least on the level of "In Full Effect", let me know

Yeah, like many golden age hip-hop artists, it was a downward slope for Mantronix. "The Album" & "Music Madness" are definitely my favorites, but I like "In Full Effect" more than "This Should Move Ya" because the duo was just not the same without MC Tee. I'd give that one 4 stars. Oh, and "The Incredible Sound Machine" is just bad. lol
